Is he building up the areas not injured, like Thilthorpe did? Or is his injury heat map fairly spread out?
He does look to be putting on some size, which is good, but still needs to do the running aspect of training and needs consistency via match play to get confidence his body will hold up.

If we trade SDK - who is playing on Darcy, Thilthorpe, McKay, King x2, Larkey, Treacy etc next season?
Agreed.. you don’t trade out 24 yo 204 cm KPD… and yes he’s not at 22 level but he’s getting back above his floor of form performances I’d suggest

Go Catters

Would Ted Clohesy be a solid option if he was to follow Steven King across??
Watched all his VFL games as well.. no one puts in more effort and defensive work

If hate to lose him - he’s our Tom Atkins replacement - we need him for hardness and defensive pressure IMO but it’s outta my control

Go Catters

Ashcroft + ashcroft were both the best player in their respective cohorts.

Has a side making b2b grand finals ever received consecutive no1 picks??
Perfect example of AFL selective equalisation policies

Go Catters

Butters will get matched 100 %
Not sure that is true, if the compo is better than we can offer, which could be something like pick 5, then port should consider it.

Man if Butters wants to get to us and Port match, I am going to lose it and demand we commence legal action against the league. We've been unnecessarily nice to the crows and giants. Port can seriously gagf.

If you were port you would match though. You match that level of player.

Perhaps, but under what pretence? Some kind of indentured servitude? I just can't really see how any of this stands up to legal scrutiny. And this is why I was not happy about gifting rival clubs multiple draft picks for players we had no obligation to.

So set out your plan for the AFL to establish academies in the NT, Queensland, Sydney and wherever else, separate from the clubs in those areas?
Isn’t there an obvious answer to that question? It is not hard to imagine the afl running academies wherever it wants to. Set up the infrastructure and away you go.

It is not a difficult problem to fix, the afl just needs to dedicate the resources to it.

Rather searching for improvement, our bigger issue is maintance.

Looking at our 33-35 year old, we don't have too many heir apparent strutually. Now should opportunity come, maybe someone steps up faster than expected. But we have to plan for a life without them even if they're in the 22.

Dangerfield -> O.Henry
Blicavs -> ?
Cameron -> ?
Stanley - > ?

Structually we have coverage for Stewart so we can affort to build from the bottom there.

Improvement

We'd want to thicken up our midfield rotations. I'd rather have a ball winner than a tagger, it made sense to go for the tagger when your next players in don't actually win the ball. If the effects of tagging were consistant teams would lean into it more.

Atkins also turns 30 next year, putting even more pressure for us to grow here. I think we need at least two solid players to maintain our current level. One of those might come from within, we have around four guys on our list around the age for 20-23. We don't need a star our rotations are that thin that, even just adding someone who can reliabilty compete, realistically we're looking for a guy who can get low 20s disposals and 4ish clearances a game. Would have a disproportionate effect.

Ideally we'd bring in a star, but now every one understands the value balance and since the AFL has oppened up future trading to an additional year, we're about to see a massive price inflation for proven talent.

We need our next Jed Bews, it could be Mullin, this is more likely to be home grown then traded in.

Trade targets

Ruck
Inside mid/s
Good ball users that can run (can never have too many)

From the rumours flying around it seems that we going in this way

Draft targets

Other than a developing KPD, and a younger goal sneak, we have an even group running around in the VFL

Yes but when the afl ran the academies they didnt invest enough money to run them to the right participation level which is why they outsourced it to the clubs at a lower cost.
That may or may not be the case, but that is not the problem.

The afl needs to run the academies for the betterment of the game. Dedicate the resources, if that means they divert some of their subsidies of the northern clubs to academy programs then so be it. The point of subsidising the northern clubs clubs is to ensure that the clubs in these developing regions are sound and the game can thrive in those areas that need support. That should be the exact same goal as the academies.

If the afl ran them they would be consistent in their operation, and they could ensure that the money is used to develop as many players as possible, not just used to be a conveyor belt of top end talent for a few select clubs.

Why would gc or Brisbane or Sydney or gws or any club use their funds to increase participation in their region? They don’t care about participation, they only care about developing the absolute top end talent for their clubs. The strength of the game in these states is not driven by these clubs being premiership contenders every year, it will be driven by more kids playing it from a young age and eventually it becomes their favoured sport of choice over the other footy codes. How do you reckon soccer became so popular recently? It is because a cohort of kids over the last 20 years grew up playing soccer when historically they would have grown up playing footy or rugby league. They then turn into young adult soccer fans instead of young adult afl or nrl fans.

At the moment the acadamies are not in place to develop the game overall, they are in place to ensure that little Johnny from Broadbeach has a clear path to playing for his local team on the Gold Coast. That will never change unless the afl takes over running the academies with the stated goal of growing the game.

Actually, I don't mind the idea of Stengle being part of a trade for Curnow as long as Tyson's happy to leave, though. I could see that being desirable for him as he would be closer to Eddie Betts & Family if playing for Carlton. But if Tyson stays at the Cattery, then I'm happy for that to happen, too.

I would trade Stengle and play Atkins as a small forward, brings more grunt

We have Mellor coming through as NGA in a forward role. We aren't struggling for forward roles.
And if we keep Clohesy that's another guy who can play pressure/scoring small forward.

What I have heard dogs in dissaray. Beveridge was pushing for Wilkie and Sam Power wanted nothing to do with it. Money offered and discussed by Beverage was not even agreed to by the higher ups. He went out on his own.

What an amateurish organisation

Cheers Bevo for making St Kilda dig a bit deeper into their wallets.

Feel for Bevo, Wilkie was the right trade target. What is power thinking?

Atkins' strengths are winning clearances, tough tackling in close, and tagging. His weaknesses are ball use, athleticism, finding the footy, and hitting the scoreboard. He is a defensive midfielder all day, every day.

So you would basically get rid of a guaranteed 35 goals/year, in exchange for some 'grunt'.
