We may see the end of McLean...

Depth, should be the ultimate VFL break glass guy. It's better him being the break glass than Francis. That's a significant upgrade

With a 5 man interchange, I can see us just going with Ladhams and Grundy to ruck, 2 tall forwards (McDonald and Anartey) complimented by a smaller, more mobile forward line.

Last touch is probably going to come in so I'm leaning towards the fifth spot going to a running player and the game increasing in speed as less ruck contests in total

Well, with Ladhams re-signed and only Lloyd yet to sign, does that mean our number of list spots available may mean there is nobody new coming in apart from Rosas and draftees?

Edit: I forgot we are losing Buller

Depends on outgoings in the trade period.

We are being aggressive, so wouldn't surprise me if a few players are traded to generate spots.

We also have multiple academy selections this year that require space

  • King
  • Carmichael
  • Kyle
  • Chamberlain

All will likely be in the senior draft, and thats before our first pick (Pending it being traded out).

We only need to take a maximum of 3 of those academy kids, the obvious first two, Kyle a MAYBE (would prefer as a rookie though), Chamberlain I'd be risking that he gets through to the rookie

Still can see Florent going to generate a list spot

I have not been following things closely but why the hell are we letting Buller go considering our awful tall forward stocks?

Pies are offering a guaranteed position

The issue is for Buller- is he being picked over Amartey/Logan? Probably not lets be real okay. He'll certainly be ahead of Mason Cox for the Pies.

He'd be nuts to not take the Pies deal to be honest

He is pretty close to it though. Letting him go feels like a massive mistake given we are already pretty shite on the tall forward front and will only get worse without Buller.
We're not letting him go. We offered him a contract. Not much we can do if he doesn't want to sign it.

We offered him a contract but his shot it down.

Collingwood can give guaranteed game time next year, we cannot (As his likely behind both Logan and Amartey).

Add in the fact we are chasing Curnow (and the players may know something we don't), its not surprising he would seek a trade for opportunity.

When Amartey was fit this year, we didn't struggle with our forward line.

When Amartey and McDonald were fit last year, we were the number one scoring side in the league (Yes they only kicked 40 odd each, but they create opportunities for others and give us more confidence/ structure when moving the ball).

Unpopular opinion I guess but I think McLean is good in the backup ruck / 3rd tall forward role, I easily prefer him in our team to Buller or Ladhams.

We likely lowballed him a bit though. Also didn't we offer him a contract quite late, not really indicating we wanted to keep him?

There is no proof he was lowballed though?

Buller wasn't exactly breaking down the door for selection this year form the VFL, he definitely grabbed his opportunity when he was promoted to the AFL side but new contracts aren't written out overnight and he likely had his papers stamped beforehand.

The Curnow talks also didn't come out of nowhere and require a fair bit of planning.

This fits with 4 talls though (2 KPF + 2 ruck, 2.5 + 1.5 etc). We played with that in a 22, so the 5th bench player can be a small and still fits. Need a backup ruck in any case, whether it's a McLean or Ladhams.

I feel like the second ruck will be a part time ruck full time forward more so than now. You're not going to increase your ruck presence and decrease your forward presence when there will be less opportunity to gain advantage in the ruck imo.

Although I'm sure there will be some games Ladhams and Grundy play together

Sure. I don't mind going 1 ruck, 2 KPFs even, with more medium options. But with 2 or 3 KPFs, one has to be a decent ruck. It's not likely, nor should it be, Logan or Amartey for us, so it's McLean or Ladhams. Given McLean's form, there's a case to be made for Ladhams to play as the 3rd KPF/ruck.

I think there's still going to be plenty of throw-ins between the arcs, with umpires erring on the side of caution in congestion or contests. Plenty of spoils, paddles, fumbles etc.
