We may see the end of McLean...
Honestly, the evolution of our team means that he is a fringe player at best. Aside from his ability to pinch hit in the ruck, his accuracy in front of goal kept him in the side most weeks before this year. Once he started missing so many crucial shots on goal you realised that he offers little else to the side and I say this as an ardent supporter of the man.

Possibly? It's still depending on Geelong and what they offer up.

He hasn't publically declared a club yet. So hopefully he realises that Geelong cannot do the trade for him then we come in.

(Remember to note that his management did directly call some of our players to determine if they would be willing to go to Carlton, so there has to be a strong chance).

He is pretty close to it though. Letting him go feels like a massive mistake given we are already pretty shite on the tall forward front and will only get worse without Buller.

Close does not equal guaranteed and that's what he rightly so is after. He's not being picked over Amartey and Logan...and this is the same coach that picked Francis and Hamling as forwards over him.

If you are him you would take the certainty every single time and I don't blame him

As slow as a turtle in a game now that's all about pressure and keeping the ball in, he's terrible at it. Amartey at east tackles and tries to chase when he's not marking it.

I'd rather replace McLean with a small or medium though that's where Rosas comes into play

Finnbar Maley?

Finishing 10th and watching others ( top teams ) potentially bring in best 22 players

We need to be aggressive now otherwise we are left behind big time

Will finish same

I am sure we are trying but the blind reality is other clubs have firstly way more assets and this is the single worst draft to hold so called top 10 picks, they aren't worth that much.

Be patient but at end of day if we get a couple to help our depth and then add pick 9 plus the two academy kids it's hardly some terrible off season

We did, and he still chose to request a trade.

You can hardly blame him...We played Francis ahead of him...yes the great Francis who is next to utterly hopeless

Totally unrelated to this trade period, but Josh Gabelich earlier on Trade Radio confirmed we did offer Sam Frost a 3 year contract last year, but he chose to stay at Hawthorn - and has now been delisted.

Trac strikes me as super professional. He wanted to leave last year. Didn't kick up a stink when it didn't happen and played this year with no drama's. No BS like Merrett and Curnow seem to be trying to do. Has asked to leave again and wouldn't shock me if he ended up staying. I don't think Goodwin being here means anything.
Yeah but he had a terrible season by his standards. I watched him live a few times & the want to work hard wasn’t there.

Not really. I think he was just a kid who got doorstopped and was trying to be cagey.
Loved the $50 comment!
At what age is he no longer a kid

Because he's not quite good enough to be guaranteed games with us
Yet McClean Isn't or shouldn't be and McDonald's output through gradual development & significant time off with injury still leaves question marks. Add Amartey's Propensity for Injury to occur and there you have a situation where Buller was at worst a capable insurance policy. Risky Move to let a bloke go who had shown more than enough to fit that bill.

Every trade period we hear the same thing from you.

Remember this after the 2017 trade period?

2017 Draft & Trade Hypotheticals Thread (cont. in Part II) Page 306 BigFooty Forum.png

Port went from 5th at end of the 2017 H&A season to 10th in 2018
Adelaide first to 12th
Ess 7th to11th
Freo stayed 14th

2019 of the 4 'trade winners' only Ess 8th made the finals

2020 Port finished top of the ladder (lost PF)
Adelaide wooden spooners
Ess 13th
Feo 12th

Nice to add better players but the obsession to 'win' the trade period is a pointless exercise.

We're not letting him go. We offered him a contract. Not much we can do if he doesn't want to sign it.
If that is the case then fair play. Pies offer was much the same time wise but probably more lucrative remuneration then one would think ? Why he would knock it back to go there if that wasn't the case is puzzling though. Probably assured games with Miochek on the move. They are dead set shot if Elliott leaves.

strangely im less worried about best 22. i think our best 22 is pretty good. and when they go injury free as they did in 2024 we are pretty competitive.

i am much more pessimistic about players 23-29. i just dont see any of them coming into our side and think we are about the same standard. ladhams is fine as a back up ruck and tall forward. but its plauers like corey (can get it a bit but not great decision making) matt roberts (slow and not a great tackler) taylor adams (like lewis taylor before him a player with the ability to play AFL but his ability is not what it was) and hamling and sheldrick that when they have to play a lot of footy at a high standard that i just cant see it. bizarrely i have more confidence in riley bice coming off half back or the wing so maybe he can get a run and we might expect some improvement from dattoli and hannily, but the more i think about it the more i think a really good marking player in the back half and someone to put lots of pressure on in the nidfield will determine this side for 2026

of course they are not the players available so...

When Amartey was fit this year, we didn't struggle with our forward line.

When Amartey and McDonald were fit last year, we were the number one scoring side in the league (Yes they only kicked 40 odd each, but they create opportunities for others and give us more confidence/ structure when moving the ball).
Spot On. Looked much more functional. McDonald Has A Huge Year Ahead Of Him Next Year. Has To Bare Fruit.
