Depends how much work ANB has done convincing Petracca that the Adelaide Footy club is the right fit
ANB left Melbourne for only one reason. He loved something else more than the club. Totally okay.

But the club couldn't persuade him to stay and having him carry-on with his career at another club says more about Melbourne than ANB. It's been widely recognised that his family were his reason. Again, totally okay.

Trac has his own reasons for seeking to move. We don't know what they are but again, that Melbourne can't persuade him is a problem for their footy club.

If ANB had negative comments about us, I don't believe Trac would even consider us. Unlike ANB, he would have many suitors in an open market.

I think ANB held a very highly respected position within Melbourne and his influence over his friends and team mates would have been significant. He has enjoyed his move to the Crows and is now so pleased, he's happy to recommend the same for a well regarded friend.

P.s... in the world of sales and customer relations, the recommendation of a trusted friend is worth more than any glossy pamphlet or sales pitch.

Why would him wanting to be a part of a league leading midfield and more likely flag contender than us, make him less of a "consummate professional and winner"? I just don't see why anyone would think that being a cog in that midfield and getting time forward of the ball would be less palatable than playing 80% game time in a 4 man midfield setup.

I just think that’s taking the easier way out. And that’s fine if he doesn’t want to be the main man in a midfield - he’s earned that right but just wouldn’t want him here if he’s got that mentality. Being seen as the “big hope” to fix the gaping hole in our midfield would be a lot of pressure late in your career

If Trac wants to soak up on rays on the Gold Coast and play for an expansion club in front of 10-15k a week in a non-footy state cruising through a mid/forward rotation at his age then no worries. Good luck to him - wouldn’t want to pay huge amounts of salary and trade collateral if he’s committed to that mindset. Also good luck with JUH….

Hopefully he’s the consummate professional and winner that everyone says he is and wants to play for a big club in a big footy state. I think ANB, and to a lesser extent Burgo (even though he’s going), will be huge in convincing him that the AFC are what he wants. The food/wine opportunities for his off-field brand will be huge in Adelaide as well.
The Gold Coast is literally a culinary desert

Fair enough. Appreciate your intel as always.

Edit: noticed that everyone’s ’favourite’ mod SYL said last night that it’s a done deal to Suns based on his sources.
Damn, if the great oracle SYL has spoken, then it's all over.

Never forget that after Sam Edmund ran the famous story that Dawson had chosen Port, Dawson met with Adelaide a week later and did a medical, a day before then also doing the same with Port. This board was collectively shitting itself for days after he met with Port. At this stage they are still going with it being a 50/50 decision i.e. they have no idea.

It feels like in these situations that the club that meets with the player in person first is usually their preference, even though we all get worried when they also meet with another club after and think that means our pitch wasn't enough to sway the player to us. I know he spoke to Hardwick on the phone before meeting up with the Crows, but he would have also needed to speak with someone at the Crows on Sunday (or maybe before) to at least setup the meeting on Monday.
No doubt players and player managers would feel obliged to meet with and tour clubs that have expressed an interest.

Dawson met with Port
Luko met with Adelaide

Players go into these situations with a strong idea where their preference lies

Let’s take a step back for a sec.

I think there is enough smoke out there to assume Petracca is a good chance of heading north rather than to us. Which means there could be a lot of disappointment in a couple days time.

So might as well take stock now. We will still get Ah Chee who is a good player albeit not a needle mover and does not fix our midfield woes other than allowing more midfield time for Rankine especially if Rachele gets injured again.

With Trac, McVee and likely May gone I can’t really see the Dees allowing Oliver to walk as well.

That basically removes any key midfield targets, which leaves us with 14 (likely to be 16-17 post FA compensation picks) to take to the draft. Maybe we can move up the order by going for Carlton’s pick for example, but that would likely require having to trade out of next year’s first round which is always a dicey play and this year is probably not the draft to do it.

So basically Ah Chee and pick 16 plus a couple later ones (and Cotton). Meanwhile the Suns, Hawks and Lions boost their lists with star power.

This is a realistic scenario. How do we feel about it? Do we have faith that Draper, Curtin, Soligo etc are capable to taking us to the same level in the next two years?

Are you able to disclose where your source is from (that we've been pursuing Petracca for a while)? Can just be general, nothing specific

Really bad outcome. Miss on NWM and Petracca.
