FWIW, with all this jibber jabber about our lack of KPD, I see it differently to most. I'm happy with our current stocks but maybe that's because my expectations of Buss and JOD developing into reliable KPDs exceeds most.

Buss will have a point to prove next season. It will be his fourth year in the system and he probably feels a bit unwanted at the moment due to only playing seven matches to date and our seemingly aggressive approach to land a KPD in trade week. Personally, that would give me motivation to prove everyone wrong.

Although inconsistent, I've been impressed with his growth and it fills me with even more confidence now hearing he hasn't yet completed a full preseason.

JOD has improved every season. I don't see why he won't continue to improve. His trajectory is going in the right direction.

I'd be very concerned if our defensive profile didn't improve next season especially given the likelihood we hold our stagger more instead of being so aggressive forward of centre.

Agreed,

Geelongs KPD for most of the year were SDK and O'Sullivan no reason JOD and Buss can't match their output with another full preseason

We are losing alot of KPP depth though with Jones, Khamis and Marra all out the door. With everyone fit and firing we'll be fine but injuries happen.

GDP per capita ;)

Or Amartya Sen's groundbreaking "capability approach"
a more accurate measure is gdp ppp. the hdi is even a better measure my fellow economist. developed by Haq and supported by Sen. BTW Sen autographed me his book development as freedom. off to china next week to teach a behavioural economics course. :)

If we treat Croft like a forward issue is that we only have four key defenders on our list, and that's even if you consider Buss and JOD keys and not defenders.

Lobb, JOD, Buss, Gardner, that's it.

Lobb was converted over the age of 30, had a weaker 2nd half of the year including the final and is going into next year as a 33 year old. There's no guarantee that he doesn't have an age-related decline.

JOD should improve with experience and age but I expect this no more than to cover for Lobb's decline.

Buss I've posted about enough.

Gardner's been posted about other than enough.

You typically want 5-6 key defenders on your entire list for VFL and injury cover, and just to have balance in training and tactical options.

We're going to have to add defensive talls one way or another to our list, even if we don't get our main trade targets.

Walker is a KPD was only moved forward in the final as we had Jones and lost Buku

We are also getting Will Darcy who is a defender

Darcy in via draft pick up a Frost as a DFA Walker in the MSD replaces Buku
Darcy is very, very raw he will struggle at VFL level next year although i hope we draft him it is a very long term project. Walker too is extremely raw, but could replace a Coffield or Cleary. Frost I'd say could replace Jones but if that was our only move I'd rather have kept Jones.

Zac Walker isn't a KPD. He's a third a best, but I would characterise him as a medium.

It's 50/50 at best whether Darcy even gets added to our list. He's simply not a good enough player, name and athletic traits aside.

Western Bullodgs website Zack Walker Key Defender

No its not Darcy is 100% going to be on the list

Lachie Smith was raw last year and took big strides this year,

I wouldn't want them as locks for 23 games next year but they are "depth" if playing well and required

DOGS' DARCY DRAFT PLAN

THE WESTERN Bulldogs could look to shift up the draft board with a bid set to come for father-son prospect Will Darcy.

Darcy is a raw talent but has been invited to test at the national Telstra AFL Draft Combine next month.

The Dogs currently have only picks No.10 and 28, but could target a move up the board using the second-round pick given the bid for Darcy could come around the middle of the second round.

He is so raw it isn't funny. If he were to play AFL next year it means we have no one else fit to play.
Whilst I hope we draft him I wouldn't want to match with anything more then a pick in the 50s as that is where I'd take him. Romance aside if a bid comes before our pick 28 I pass.

Cal did say lock it in that he will be at the Dogs pretty strong words

We need defensively capable small and medium defenders more than key defenders.

We have Lobb and O’Donnell surrounded by attacking smalls in Dale, Johannisen and Bramble. Replace the latter two with a couple of athletic mediums and our defence would be set for next year.

As it stands, replacing JJ with Budarick would be a good upgrade defensively.

I'm not doubting him. Just saying that I wouldn't match at that point.
Even if a weak draft. Near zero chance he gets bid around 28. As you said he is that raw, even other teams will probably only try and draft him due to his name. And likely via a late bid as well. If we keep 28, it will be safe.

Sellwood after a full preseason should help there as well over a Bramble/Cleary

Will Darcy being picked in the second round would be a complete joke.

I've watched enough of him to say that he wouldn't be on the draft radar if his last name wasn't Darcy. He averaged 6 disposals and 1.2 marks per game in his Coates league games.

He's remarkably raw and wasn't up to scratch at that level. Given his footballing pedigree and that Sam developed late, I'm more than happy to take up but not at a second rounder.
