Police are continuing to search for four-year-old Gus, who disappeared from his family's vast sheep grazing property while playing in sand about 5pm on Saturday.

Superintendent Syrus said the search was being guided by the expertise of the property owners and neighbouring landholders, while locals had combed the area on motorbikes.

A helicopter and drones have scoured the area from the sky, while police divers have checked water tanks and the dams on the property where water was present.

It's not suspected anyone had taken the boy, Syrus saying the "only people who would travel on this road are station owners" or those who serviced the area.

He said it was "unusual" for Gus to have wandered off and said the boy "normally stays within the confines of the area".

The devastated family of a missing four-year-old boy has released a statement saying it is holding on to hope "he will be found and returned safely" as authorities and community members continue the search in mid-north South Australia.

“It’s such a big area and probably the frustrating thing for us is we actually haven’t got a direction of travel, so we’ve got to cover off on a 360 degree area as opposed to a direction of travel that he might have been walking in when he was last seen."

Police previously said the sprawling 6,000-hectare property was "very isolated", with about 3,000 sheep, while goats, kangaroos and wallabies could also be found in the area.

Superintendent Syrus said given more than 60 hours had passed since Gus vanished, concern was rising.

"It is starting to concern us, but that doesn't diminish our hopes that we actually do find him and then get him to some medical facilities as quickly as possible," he said.”

Unfortunately the police generally think they can solve the case and trample all signs unreadable.
Another consideration these days is the child on the spectrum, that helps identify possible pathways that might be taken.

Yes, l was about to say this. Something is very amiss here. There have been unconfirmed reports little Gus has a complicated care situation.

It seems LE has learned nothing from William's case. A tracker was only sourced yesterday. Dogs couldn't detect a scent either, probably due to search activity before they were deployed. I don't think this will end well, poor little lad.

What should be done immediately, if not already done is to secure the scene and conduct a thorough forensic analysis of all buildings and vehicles. Separate all residents / family members / immediate contacts and record detailed interviews to gather all information about people's movements around the time of the disappearance. Confiscate phones, computers and other devices. Download all cell data (if available). Get the child's full medical history and interview all people he's been in contact with over the last few weeks (or months). Get CCTV from nearest highway cameras, closest petrol stations, shops etc (if any).

Looking at the photo, the "prominent" shoe print seems to be in an unprotected location. Could the wind have missed filling in that one, but got all other prints? Alternatively IMO potential red herring?

Almost 50 members of the Australian Defence Force will join the search for missing boy Gus, which is entering its sixth day in outback South Australia, police have confirmed.

“We've got to remember that he [Gus] actually lives on the property and that might have been a footprint that he might have left there a couple of days ago, even before he went missing," Superintendent Syrus said.

While the print was found near a road, Superintendent Syrus said he thought it was "highly unlikely" anyone else was involved in Gus's disappearance.

"That's another theory we do think about. At the start of any searches, we have an investigational component to it," he said.

"Yesterday, we had detectives up here speaking with people; they left yesterday. The road itself is not a public road — there's six gates to go through to actually get to the property.

"It's highly unlikely, but something the investigators are looking at."”

I'm wondering about wombat burrows. Are they in that area? My friends and l regularly camp in an area inhabited by wombats. We're always wary at night, lest we drink too much red and vanish! They can dig several metres into the ground. A child could slide into one easily.

It’s possible. It’s pretty rough country. He could have crawled into somewhere.
Police seem (at least publicly) to think it’s not suspicious.
I’m wondering if there were workers on the property that are witnesses. Just a thought.

Why wasn't he picked up by infrared then? Or why didn't sniffer dogs follow his scent to a nearby wombat hole?
