As difficult as it is for me to normally do, I look at it a little more glass half full

I reckon our improvement comes two fold

1) Let’s look at the inclusions. Bobby and Jordy are - for all intents and purposes, new recruits next year. Buller makes us younger and taller in the forward line. May makes the already best defence in the comp even better (assuming we get him). Beau will spend more time in the middle as well as hopefully less time injured. This also makes it our midfield a bit stronger

2) Hopefully our depth players won’t be injured next year. Harrison, Reef, West et al all hopefully remain injury free and push from underneath which should also push the seniors a bit harder
Agree internal growth and 2-3 cheap list need additions can see us contend again. Should def be around the top 6. But, if the wheels do fall off the Billy cart I really want us to have our first rounder for next season. Not just to target a big name, but to have the option of taking a highly rated kid which we haven't had access to for a while. Nothing worse than being nowhere mid season and not having your first to at least look forward too.

I think it is...oh boy...Going to have to suck it up and support the big fella....
Provided he trains hard over pre season and in the right head space, he's in our best 22 round 1 no doubt. The guy doesn't lose 1 v 1s. He could be the steal of the season for 12-24 months until we can find the next decent big lad.

Father-son and Academy prospects set to shape Collingwood draft plans
Collingwood’s draft plans are set to be shaped by Next Generation Academy and Father-Son picks in 2025 according to Trade Radio’s Cal Twomey.
The Magpies have access to three players who will be on draft boards, Oakleigh Chargers duo Zac McCarthy and small forward Jai Saxena as Academy options and Western Jets midfielder Tom McGuane, the son of Magpies great Mick McGuane.

While McGuane was the big name heading into this season, Twomey expects McCarthy to be Collingwood’s priority when it comes to the trio with the forward/ruck rated as the 27th best prospect in his August edition of his Phantom Form Guide on AFL.com.au.

Beveridge: “Will Collingwood be looking at picking up all three of Zac McCarthy, Tom McGuane and Jai Saxena in this year's draft? They’re all eligible to go to the Pies as Academy or father-son.
Twomey: “Yeah, I think McCarthy will be the priority.
“McGuane, I think, can probably be a later or rookie pick, and Saxena again is probably more of a rookie opportunity.”
Collingwood currently hold picks 35, 53, 65 and 71 in the 2025 Draft, prior to this year’s trade period.

McGuane a later or rookie pick?? Granted I don’t follow or know much about draft pool this year, but I swear a few months ago I saw he was going to be rated as a potential first round selection?

Imagine being stalked by Carlton? Shudder.

Love Billy, never in doubt, he’s one Pie I couldn’t cop seeing in other colours. Just wouldn’t be right.

Thanks club and thanks Jamie for sorting this out.

Mostly just Collingwood supporters falling in love with him based on his surname.

No it's not. He was on the edge of the AA team this year. $500,000 is the average wage and that includes kids who will play less than 1 game of AFL.

Because some veterans who were paid a heap throughout their career are willing to play for the club for a heap less than what they're worth, doesn't mean all veterans should.
Especially one who’s been getting paid unders for all intents and purposes for most of his career.

Playing in a team that won 2 games probably didn't help. And then learning a new position on top on that. You can add in the fact he's quite under developed physically
Similar pathway to josh daicos. Give a few preseasons to add on some weight.

When 'they' say this draft is weaker, do they mean the top ten or so?
Because if the likes of Tom & Jai are considered likely rookie picks, it sure must be a deep enough pool of decent talent.

As the year has gone on, I think the depth has increased a bit.
This was prob best case senario for Jai, given he wasn't even on the draft radar until 6 months ago. Didnt have a bottom age year. He'll be happy to be at the pies, no matter where he gets picked

I’d be interested to learn the median wage. Average is a pretty useless number when there are massive outliers on the upside
I don't think that Median is that informative either with so many on mimimum wage way below the mean. Median is the 22nd player. It'd just tell you what a fringe player gets paid - I don't think it'd be that far above minimum wage. Median of the senior players would be good.

Judging by reports, Elliott at 650 would be below Daicos, Daicos, Moore, JDG, Cameron, Hill, Maynard, Houston, Perryman - similar to McStay - no idea about Crisp, IQ, Schultz, McCreery. I don't think he's even close to being overpaid relative to likely performance.

So we might not really need many points after all

I'm not sure he should be commenting to the media like he has been, even if he doesn't like whats being said. Its best to ignore, or unfollow those accounts.
If he stays silent, the drums will only beat louder. In this instance I think Bobby being this clear in his intent to stay will shut any reporters who are trying to stir something up.

That’s not really true, he was certainly rated as a potential first round prospect at the beginning of the year.

And if they kept him in the midfield all year, who knows where he could have risen. If he was in a better team with more support, rather winning 2 games for the year, who knows. But everyone knows what he is capable of on ball, so it was the changing of positions they wanted to see -- which will be his position at the next level in the short term. Just had others go past him during that time. If it gets him cheaper, so be it.
