So with Tex's decision to play on .....we can only assume, this spells the end of Burgess

You'd think so, but with 4 (I think) list spots left, assuming we trade in Ah Chee and Petracca and presuming not much left to use at the draft, he might survive as depth for depth. We did see that even against 1 win West Coast we had no appetite to see what a 2 tall forward structure looked like.

Would hope we use that opportunity to start developing another tall forward as the cupboard is pretty bare.

So if Petracca falls over then what's everyone's thoughts on a plan B.

Going hard for Zac Bailey would be an obvious one but who else?

Butts would be best 22 at a lot of clubs, AFL level KPD don't grow on trees, honestly think Melbourne should be all over Butts

Like say we gave Butts and pick 14 and then 14 went on to Gold coast for Flanders.

I think Flanders and Butts for Petracca on 1.5 mill is a wonderful deal for Melbourne. Two young players who'll be best 22 for the rest of their AFL careers, Flanders wants 900k (a bit steep but so many clubs want him he can get it) and Butts with 600k uses that Petracca money a lot better.
Great post.

But...

I have a feeling that 14 and Jordan Butts is overs for Petracca.

With it looking like Elijah Holland isn't getting any interest from other AFL clubs and perhaps Carlton paying him out and delisting him a real possibility, should that happen could we offer him the chance to train with us over the pre-season with a view to picking him up as a SSP before the February deadline if he knuckles down and puts his past issues hehind him?
Could work. Adelaide's nose beers are pretty weak so that may help him to get off it.

Why not?

He was pick 23 in a rookie draft and is shit.

I would say there is a decent chance we rind someone better.

We have seen his Ceiling. its shit. lets bring in a player with a high floor.
All our best big defenders were rookies!

Murray, Butts. Bock, Rutten.

Talia the only one who wasn't.

Laird a rookie too!

Cody looks like a plodder right now. But, hey, if it keeps Dan here for another 10 years, I’m all for it.
Does that mean we have to keep Cody for 10 years also...if he turns out to be a plodder.

It might end with a simple decision...but it might not too.

Never work with friends or family. The disputes and breakups become too complicated often.

Everyone is talking about Butts leaving ....posters here happy to let him go for Petracca 🤮 .....it does appear, if anyone asks Butts, he actually wants to stay
Agree.
It is, after all, a distinct possibility he could be best 23 for us next year as a permanent full back.

The Murray Butts decision is wide open IMO.
Butts has a fair argument to say he outplayed Murray this year.
I wouldn't be trading Butts ATM without a massive return coming back. He's a better full back than half the comp.

The AFL isn't quite at the Thanasis level yet

Try and trade up for Sharp or Cumming. With a few SA kids likely to go first round its not the worst result to keep our first rounder this year to grab one.

If we don’t get Petracca I am +1 for doing everything we can to get Sharp.

I am a little worried getting Petracca for an older player wiping us out for the next two drafts. Then TAS compromising the next 3 drafts. Thats 5 years without decent picks/draftees especially if we expect to sit higher on the ladder.

Sharp/Draper will hopefully set up our midfield for the next 10 years.

Of course it’s the challenge for the now vs long term. Neither guaranteed to pay off.
