I don't know the bloke at all but suspect this is more in jest than a reflection of his character.
Played more than OK footy in the back half of 2025 and has been in the top handful of midfielders at his peak.
Still only 28 years old.
Never been a huge follower of Clayton but at the rumoured 50% discount, all I'm saying is we can make (and have made) far worse list decisions than to get him in.
Clarry at his best was outstanding, but he was awful in the back half of the year. Could still get the ball, but was so bad with it that you would have preferred him not getting it.

On a positive note with long and Oliver kicking inside 50 would make it hard to defend as where it goes is anyone’s guess

The Melbourne environment hasn't exactly been the best in recent years. So maybe he needs a change in environment to rediscover some of his form.

The only question is , what trade compensation are Melbourne seeking?

Is it a case of, the greater the trade offer the lower the new clubs financial commitment will be?

Can definitely rule out trading a first rounder for a 28 yr old player.

Could suit if we do go with inexperienced talls next year. Our blokes will probably be in the wrong place, so blokes who kick it to the wrong place will be invaluable.

I'd say in Melbourne's case they have shown their hand and can't afford to ask much at all if anything

And he hasn't helped with that environment tbf with all his issues

Oliver still averaged around - 26 touches, 5 tackles, 6 clearances and 12 contested possessions a game.

So paying a player somewhere between 650-700K for that sort of production is not the worst idea in the world.
And 0 brownlow votes from it.
So makes you wonder that maybe he wasn't hurting with his touches.

Exactly. My view is that footy ability wise and what he can deliver in terms of things such as centre bounce clearances (which has been a bit of a weakness for us), I think Clayton Oliver would be a worthy investment at 600K a year.

Unless his off-field issues are too big an issue and simply can't be solved in which case we'd probably steer clear.

Put it another way, he feels less of a risk than rolling the dice with say a JUH who could also be anything but sounds like his resolve to sort out his private life is questionable

Didn't he get more than a few votes in previous years when Melbourne were winning a lot?
Hard to attract votes when your team loses more than it wins.

Just looked into it. 195 career votes. 23 games with 3 votes. 59 games in which he polled so far in his career. Definitely no dud

Couldn’t agree more say what you want about Oliver but if they pay $700k and we have to pay only $800k that’s not bad for us! Then unlike Melbourne we have Pendles, Steele ect to pull him up if he out of line like Dangerfield kind of does for smith at cats

King not mucking round.
No Oliver petracca mcvee or may by the looks.
I'd go after Oliver.
Started to look like he'd be on top of things. Played his best game in years rd 24.
Not much capital needed

Just not in the last 2 years. When he was at his best, 100%, but thats not something we have seen for a while.
