The lack of news on this is disappointing at this point in time. That gives the impression of mismanagement.

It's going to be hard going if we have to primarily rely on Stanley, Blitz, and SDK.

Stanley is done, Blitz will break sooner than later and SDK doesn't have it imo.

They should have thought of this earlier though, Conway has had two season long injuries. There should have been plans started last year.
We've been "into" Marshall for ages. I don't doubt that we have had plans as such, but actually convincing someone to hop down the highway...

Hawthorn getting Meek for a song was disappointing, though.

We've done ok, but the noose is steadily tightening.
I have a conspiracy theory that the only reason Melbourne held on to Clayton Oliver last season was because he wanted to be traded to the Cats. There was no way they'd let us have a midfielder of Clayton's quality. If Oliver had asked to be traded to another club (especially clubs like Norf, Saints, WCE), I suspect a deal would have been done. I am pretty sure that even though Curnow wants to come to Geelong, Carlton is saying to him anywhere but there. Note: these are conspiracy theories only.

Free agents (restricted or not) are different obviously, as the club that player comes from doesn't hold the power in those negoatiations (although in restricted FA's they can match the bid, but it rarely happens).

Is it just me being too focussed on how the midfield performed in the GF, but seriously, keeping the same midfield and adding worpol and bruin is NOT going to fix that full surrender we got. Unless there is genuine improvement in there (for example Humphries continuing his incredible growth and kicking into the midfield), we will have a solid home and away midfield and a crap finals one - the prelim was basically Dangers full effort more than anything else, and when he didn’t fire a shot in the GF, we were exposed. While I’m at it - if I hear one more positive arguement on flexibility of players I’ll spew up. Where was that felxibiliy when we were getting slaughtered at attacking the ball in the GF? Where was the throwing around the magnets in the hope of getting back in the game? If they were there, none of them worked, underlining that our whole coaching panel had a shocker as well, from selection night through to the end.
Adelaide, Gold Coast, Hawks and GWS all seem to be focussed on adding high end talent to their midfields this offseason - I just feel all this attention around worpol, bruin, etc is masking our slide down the midfield pecking order as shown in the GF.
The good thing about bringing in an established player is you don't have to guess how he'll hold up against a specific club.

Here is his highlights from last year against a midfield of Neale, Dunkley, Berry, McCluggage. 3 brownlow votes with the 2 and 1 going to D'Ambrosio and Amon.

My ears pricked up last week when Mackie confirmed Stanley will play on. No disrespect to the big fella but we don’t need to keep him on the list if they were confident of getting Marshall.

Roma with back up from Blitz, SDK, Edwards or by some medical medical Conway, would be enough.

Hope I am wrong. Otherwise we have patch to Stanley up with gaffa tape and guaze and go for one more year.

So you’d piss off Jack by trading his brother who only just signed with the club a few years ago?
Not sure Jack would be pissed off. It would be an opportunity for Oli. I think they all understand how the industry works and no player is bigger than the club. It could have a negative impact on the culture for sure. Or it might be fine. Billy Smedts was traded to Carlton for Zach Tuohy. Chapman, Kelly and Johnson not given contracts in their final years. It happens, its no hard feelings.

In the case of at least two of those players, I believe there were actually truckloads of hard feelings.

I don't think the media or the footy team did itself any favours by revealing that there was a meeting at Stanley's farm.

From MFC's perspective, it was offensive that the Cats almost overtly stated that they could help Oliver.

If we were a bit more lowkey about it, then we had more chance than the flatout refusal.

There is a good lesson to be learned by the club in alot of our highlighted in the media issues. A bit of hubris and just keeping your head down and not saying anything should be the way to go for future.

I think the Cats are not being overt about Curnow because they burnt themselves badly over Oliver last year. He would have been very handy on GF day.

Well in the end it was a dumb decision by Melbourne. They turned down a first round pick and us paying him 1 million a year. Now theyre desperate and will get nothing and have to pay 700k to get rid of him

In the case of at least two of those players, I believe there were actually truckloads of hard feelings.
But those blokes were all left without a 500k a year job... OH will be still getting paid.
That is where all those hard feelings lay. The cash, their job.
I know one was seething as he had no job and no way of earning anywhere near close to what he was on.
With a mortgage and a way of life that disappeared in split second on the clubs decision.
Unfortunately some dont see the edge of the cliff and the money does actually dry up.

Worpel cant spread, kick or win the hardball.
I went to footywire thinking, "Surely they'll have something for him ..."

Upside: he knows exactly what he needs to work on, and has it common with a number of our players already. A chance to really collectively focus on something ...

Goal kicking accuracy of 37.4% career and 28.6% last year. So even more upside. A real fixer-upper.

edit: but yes I was given hope by this:
