I would like for us to regain our ability to identify and draft good mids in the early rounds .

If you got a problem with my stance, more than welcome to shove it where it doesn't shine.
There’s no science. Majority of the elite mids go in the top few pics. We’d need to be bottom 5 team for access unless f/s or academy like bris and g/c. You mentioned Holmes. Yup he was a good get at 20. Geel also used pick 7 on Clarke who’s likely a bust. Known quantities are worth their weight in gold.

Ned is only 22 and will hopefully continue to improve. Replacing him with a 29 year old doesn’t seem like an upgrade to me.

😂😂😂😂

Yeah it’s hard to see how a 28 year old multiple AA, B&F, Coaches player of the year, and did all of those in a premiership season, is an improvement on a delisted player who failed under pressure in finals.

Why not just put in 4 brand new draftees on the midfield next year? They’ll be young so that’s all that’s needed in Mrs Longs book…

Nobody is suggesting that, but to pretend that Cox is the answer is bizarre. I guess he shields them by having top defenders walk all over him instead - not sure that helps the team
I don't think Cox playing in the VFL is helping the young forwards improve.
He gets in the way more often than not.
There's also a lot of players wanting to kick goals rather than sending the ball to the forwards.
I think someone like Brody mentoring them would help them a lot.

I think Cox’s only value really comes in the ruck, but he can’t play out full games in the ruck anymore. I don’t see room for him with McStay, Membrey, West, Buller, McCarthy and potentially Howes.

its amazing ..even just talk of Oliver gets the Long cheer squad fired up...lol
you dont even have to mention him and they start joining the dots..'dont touch our Ned '

Jack Steele is a different player to Clayton Oliver

I too would prefer Steele over Oliver. Kicking efficiency is better. Tackles more. And his contract is only 2 more years, as opposed to Oliver's 5. Rumoured to be on $800-$850 per year, so a bit more than Oliver, but you wouldn't be tied to him for another 5.

But my preference is to save up for Zac in 27. Particularly if he indicated we'd be his club of choice.

Yeah, you're right - much better to throw the lambs to the wolves, without any protection. Getting destroyed by the game's best defenders every week will really accelerate their development.

I'll take that Checkers was a non factor against the Lions (he was injured though...probably shouldn't have played) but Cox still kicked two and wasn't our worst by any stretch of the imagination. And remember we were right in that game until 9 minutes to go....

Dunno how the youngsters would have gone, they'll get their chance soon enough.

Holmes was a speculative pick based on his parents genetics and Wells did well to identify it. There's always good players going around in the VFL and other comps that could be worth looking at.

We screwed up big time when we traded our 2021 1st round pick to GWS at the end of 2020.
We knew there would be a bid on Nick, but should have held it until the end of the 2021 season.
That way we could have split it into two later picks, matched a bid for Nick, and still had a reasonable draft hand.
Some have said we could have picked up Finn Callaghan as well as Nick, but I think we would have had an earlier bid on Nick instead.
We might still have picked up another good player - Darcy Wilmot went at 16, Kai Lohmann at 20 and Paul Curtis at 35.

You underestimate Dekka, who would have picked some 5’8” cricket prodigy

There’s a past trades thread to discuss this. It’s been done to death

You clearly haven’t watched Steele much the last 2 years
