2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Not blaming Ross for anything.

It’s well known if you speak to anyone at the club Ross has been very harsh on Jack through his time there and has never seen him as the elite mid a lot of us (including myself) do.
Steele is not an elite mid the likes of Cripps, Danger, Neale, Daicos, Green, Rowel. He would not be a starting mid for Collingwood for example.

The issue with Steele is he is a defensive and not a win ball first mid. Compared to elite mids Ross has worked with (Hayes, Fyfe, Neale, Brayshaw), you can’t argue with him.

now that rowan wants out we have to keep Steele. At what point does it ruin the fabric of the club, when you replace loved stalwarts who have given all for there club, for people from other clubs on bigger money but similar output? Like why bring in macrae? He's hardly an upgrade on Steele at this point of his career. I really hope the club knows what it's doing..

Eased out? He is contracted, it is his decision and if Geelong are smartarses he may well stay at the Saints.
He can ruck in the twos to Steele.

If he felt valued he wouldn't be going, it's the exact same scenario as Battle.

Its interesting how you chop and change your loyalties between players.

Would have been nice to see how the Ro + TDK combo worked for a year. Good luck to Ro. I wish him nothing but the best as he’s been an absolute warrior for our club.
Agree. And an under appreciated instigator of the Miracle at Marvel

What shall we demand? SDK/Miers/Close and a first?
Picks man.

Either a pick good enough for Ned

Or next years first and this years second type of deal.

What has Marshall done?

Requesting a trade when you've been demoted seems like a pretty reasonable thing to do.

He would be only be like that if he felt he was being forced out....

He is young man who plays with a passion for the club that he probably thought he would retire at. Now he has been eased out, I don't blame him really!
Rowan asked for a trade during his exit interview.

Ross actually shut him down multiple times. Told him he can explore Geelong but we will see you day 1 of pre season. To atleast give next year a crack.

So it’s been made clear he IS wanted - spitting the dummy out because it’s not the role he wanted is disappointing.

Whereas Steele admits he will look because of the situation but wants to stay.

How could it be the 'exact' same situation as Battle when Battle was a FA and Marshall is contracted 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Get over yourself 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.
I have no loyalties to players only the club.

Geelong is the issue here. **** them. Tell Roma we'll trade him to any club below us on the ladder, or he sees out his contract in the VFL.

He waited until TDK is announced, then concedes he's not up to fighting for his spot by requesting a trade.
Not completely true, club wanted him out,was always the plan once tdk signed on…

I have zero inside info but the "fabric of the club" has been pretty unsuccessful. It's possible (again, no inside info) that Marshall and Steele weren't quite at the high-performance cultural level that we need, and as senior players and leaders have shaped the club in their image. If that's the case (no inside info) then it could actually be a positive to remove their influence and replace them with a vibe coming from others.

But agree it's a big call. Huge burden on the coaching staff to find the next generation of leaders and make them actually drive high performance.

If I've been working somewhere for 10 years and the bosses bring someone else to do my job for twice the pay, but tell me i can cover the new guy on his breaks, I would probably be looking for a new job.

At the end of the day, this is their job, they have to look out for themselves above all.
