How many did your winner get in 2023?
Only 7 less than Daicos despite not even playing.

McCluggage had 9 more than Daicos in the head to head knockout final they played against each other alone. Thrashed him. Then was far better than Geelong's two elite midfielders on GF day. After being far better than Gold Coasts two elite midfielders in the semi final.

Easily besting Rowell, Anderson, Daicos, Holmes and Smith when it mattered (head to head) after an elite season (ending up on 97 coaches votes and as the 4th best finals player) puts McCluggage ahead.

To make it clear for everyone, here is the analysis from Mr Meow...

In 2023, the gap between Bont (1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 3 major awards) and Daicos (2nd, 3rd and 4th in the 3 major awards) was far too great for Daicos to make up the required ground despite receiving coaches votes in 2 from 2 finals, including playing in a premiership. Bont's team missed the finals. This is despite Daicos receiving more coaches votes AND Brownlow vote on average than Bont, but in 2023 this metric wasn't considered.

However, in 2025, the gap between McGluggage (outside the top 10 in both the Brownlow and Coaches Award, and who knows where in the Players MVP) was narrow enough to make up the required ground on Daicos (1st, 2nd and 4th on the major awards) with coaches votes in 3 of his 4 finals, compared to Daicos receiving votes in 1 of his 2 finals. The fact McGluggage was completely nullified in his first final, whilst Daicos was just outside the coaches votes in his Preliminary Final is irrelevant - 0 votes is 0 votes. Daicos also had Bont and Butters receive more coaches votes per game on average than Daicos, because in 2025 this was an important metric.

That's the world of selective data analysis this fellow lives in.

LOLOL

So 'average coaches votes' aren't important in 2025 when comparing Daicos and McGluggage, but they are when comparing Daicos and Bont/Butters?

It keeps getting better!

I'm glad this essay signals that you've finally come to terms with it.

Has any other player won a "Real MVP" without winning any of the game by game voting system awards OR dominating a finals series? Bont went closest in 2023 but did win his BnF. Daicos failed to in that season as well. Interesting.

Each and every year is considered on its merits.

Brisbane played 4 finals in 2025, and the top few on the Ayres Medal were well down the rankings after home and away.

I mean, McGluggage was only his team's 3rd best finals player.

I'm not like you and selectively change my algorithm to reach the desired outcome.

By coaches votes McCluggage was the premiers best player in H&A, and then he was the 4th best overall finals player.

Daicos ticked the 1st box for the 3rd or 4th best team, then was equal 19th in the finals MVP. The head to head smashing in the prelim was a decisive factor in Brisbane advancing instead of Collingwood. He did the same to Anderson, Rowell, Holmes and Smith in knockout finals when it mattered.

McCluggage is competing with Neale, WAshcroft, Dunkley and Bailey in midfield for votes. It is deep and full of quality. He was still one of the premier mids of the comp all season and finished up 4 coaches votes behind Daicos (competing with dinosaurs and Ned Long in midfield for votes most of the season).

Hugh dominated 3 knockout finals in a row on the way to a premiership, which should have incredibly strong weighting. He outperformed the likes of Rowell, Daicos and Smith in those head to head finals by a significant margin. Of course he is number one.

Elixuh Toffee Lion since we have a Pies nuffy as OP, maybe you guys can offer some balance to this argument.
I agree more with your Andrews comment. Everything is just a midfielders award these days. Love Hugh but there's definitely a few midfielders you'd probably take over him (Not too many though).

If the thread title is correct and it's the "Real" AFL MVP, I'm taking the best key back in the game.

Humble of you concerning Hugh.

Agreed about the Andrews bit and the same applies to J.Cameron for forwards. We saw what happened to Geelong when Jezza was negated and then injured. The same would be true if Andrews was missing, stopped or injured.

The "award" is simply overall season output rather than "who would you pick", when we're comparing these midfielders (accepting Fadge doesn't properly rate defenders or forwards, much like AFL awards).

Overall level varied little between the best 6 or so midfielders. McCluggage was superb in the 3 knockout finals that lead to his side's premiership, competing head to head with the other midfield contenders. In a close field that should be enough along with him almost cracking 100 coaches votes. He'd have an extra 20-25 votes per season in a less stacked midfield.
