I don't even think Viney is a good influence on our young group - not because of anything malevolent he's ever done, but because he's such a hack these days. I don't see him as setting a high enough standard of game for young players to model themselves on. Ok, he works hard on his fitness, but what has he ever improved skill wise? He's never learned how to hit a lead - or any kind of target. He can't kick long, he can't kick for goal. He doesn't read the play well. He runs like an Energiser bunny with its head chopped off. Throws it on his boot and mostly results in turnovers. Sorry, but I'm not seeing the value. It's one thing to be a well-liked bloke at the club, but he isn't a good enough footballer to result in anything meaningful - at least not anymore. Now he's not even particularly quick. Our young players like Langford, Windsor etc are better role models because they can play. We should have thanked him for his service and shipped him off to North Melbourne.
Looking at it completely wrong. Vineys benefit is he pushes blokes on the track and off field to work hard. He values being an AFL player and he values selflessness

It's not up to Lamb to make those huge contract calls.

The big contract calls pass the desks of all CEO, President, and board members...When they give the go ahead, then Lamb does the paperwork.

So its all of the above together.
Cane Kornes is a numbnut.

Mate it is up to Lamb, if all Lamb did was admin on behalf of others then wtf are we paying him for, just get a work experience d kid to do it.

100% Lamb is a key driver of all contracts, that’s what he is actually accountable for. Don’t put shit in front of the CEO to sign if you can’t own it.

Sounds good in theory, but I'm more motivated by people who excel at what they're supposed to be doing. Not training hard and then stinking it up on match day. Where's the proof that he's benefitting anybody these days? 3 years ago, sure, but what has he done for us lately?

Yeah so no one agrees with the contract he signed but as was the original point, of all the guys on bad deals vineys the most helpful for atmosphere and culture and teaching the new young crop how to train properly.
It's a bit of a shitter version of the James McDonald situation

I don't think Viney is as bad as what you've said Ando727 yeah he doesn't have the best skills and can occasionally hack the ball, but I think it's somewhat overstated. He was pretty good in a tagging role and he generally works hard. Viney is a complete professional and will drive the professionalism into the younger players.
I'm not fanboying or anything just saying that's why what saves Viney and not Oliver. Both are limited in what they do but Oliver's off field issues have cost him in the end. As for Viney's contract yes I think most posters agree that it's dumb, but it's been done.

Viney contract - terrible
Viney training & influence - great
Viney playing - serviceable

Not getting the hate. Calling him a hack, someone said 'the worst kick in the league' when he isn't even the worst in our team. Can't kick for goal when he is actually pretty good at set shot goals. He has developed into a good tagger when needed while still getting the pill. I think he can rotate forward and be a f50 pressure pest.

The problem is him and Oliver are just 2 bulls getting in each other's way. Too similar. We are keeping the right one. Older sure - but more flexible for the team and way cheaper.

He even still has the odd, 'hold me beer' type games, where is he best on or one of the best.

Most of our list are kids, and that's only going to grow larger. When it comes to setting standards, instilling values, and establishing culture, you couldn't ask for better than Viney.

What he offers is not limited to what he brings to the field... it's what he brings out in everyone else on the field that matters.

I don't know about Viney and values.
Literally shopped himself to North Melbourne to get extra years on his contract.
But yeah whatever club needed to choose between him and Oliver, so be it.

Yeah, it's a good point but it seems that is par for the course everywhere now. Being a loyal servant to a club often just means they can pay you less. Look at saints paying way overs for a bunch of B graders while under paying a gun like Wilkie and forcing out Steele and Marshall right when they might turn the corner.

Clubs are just like any other corporation, penny pinch their current staff until they are about to lose them while over paying for some new hire that hasn't done squat for them yet. Only difference is it plays out in public instead of the water cooler.

Wonder if we could grab one of the Giants’ small forwards for Oliver? They’ve got a bunch of them.
Our boy James Leake dominating in the VFL, they don't need him. #freeleake

I thought that too - just reckon small forwards are a more urgent need.

Wouldn’t say no tho!!
Finding anyone who can kick is just as an urgent need. Doubt they do it tho, they won't even give up the Derk who also never gets a game.

Agree.

Not elite talent (although at his best he was a top 50 player) but is the heart & soul of the club.

Guy you want any young kid we draft to be learning off.

Did Viney shop himself or did his manager. Big difference
Reckon North would have approached his manager and then they leveraged the club.

He doesn't get buy-in from teammates.

Viney was forced into a co-captain role in 2017 by the coaching group without the support of the playing group.

Years later, when the players got to vote for a capatain, Gawn was unanimous. Viney didn't get a single vote.

Reckon you might find this is because Viney will challenge people rather than just be their mate. Look up the story about his first game.

You need that even more when you have party pal Goody and funny guy Gawn as the other leaders.
