Re: 'Alleged' rumours resurfacing ...

Folks, this is the way things are here.

Posters are responsible for what they post. Moderators can not attest to the accuracy or otherwise of any rumour posted.

Moderators will intervene for a couple of reasons.

1. If a thread is threatening to be derailed because of a post.

2. If invested parties request the removal of material.

None of this draws a conclusion as to the accuracy or otherwise of the original post.

There is no need to further speculate. What will be will be.

Also, you need to remember that this thread like all parts of this forum is bound by the rules of poster conduct. If you want to express skepticism towards a rumour that's fine, but having a crack at posters who are contributors to this forum is simply not on and will be acted upon.

Simply put, don't be a dick.

Thanks all!

Who are our other key back? We have Weitering.

Yep. Weitering, Young, an injured 19 old, and a soon to be drafted 18 year old. That's slim pickings. You wouldn't want any youngsters playing a key post. They need to be third talls at best, until they build their core strength.

We definitely need a developed genuine tall down there. One who can take the 200cm forwards.

I'd rather us get a plug and play key back for the next 2 - 3 years while O Farrell and Dean develop. Sam Frost would be the one for me as I like his aggression. I'd also throw Burton a lifeline as depth options playing slightly taller.

Humphrey is the dream. If we lose Curnow, getting an young gun with superstar potential coupled with picks for Cody would send this board into overdrive.

Geelong be offering Bailey Smith the way things are going

Which big name were you prepared to let go at the time, we had no spare cash 💰
Did Brisbane let go of any big names after they lost the prelim and signed Dunkley, Gunstan and McKenna?

After winning the grand final, did Collingwood trade any big players out to get Schultz, then Houston and Perryman the year after?

What big names did Geelong trade out to be able to afford Jeremy Cameron before they won the flag and to be able to constantly add quality players?

You hit the nail on the head in your last line, we had no spare cash, which is the point of my frustration and a failure on the clubs behalf.

That after a long period of rebuilding, with a young side, that when we just missed finals and the following year missed the GF by 15 points, we had no scope to have a real crack.

I remember the talk around the end of 2022 was that we didn’t have any $$$ to go get players was because we’d just got Cerra, Saad, Hewett and that made sense, then at the end of 23 it was that we’d locked away all our big players, then 24 came around and nothing again.

You then realise that other clubs are strengthening their list and going past us. More than any other issue our club has had the past 5 years, not having the flexibility to add players in areas of need and needing to trade out AFL bodies for draftees is what has cost a shot at a premiership.

Surprised we’re not looking at Jacob Blight. 2 x Jacob’s as KPD’s plus he has some versatility to rotate through other positions, including ruck.

Ethan Phillips potentially but that he failed to shoot the lights out last SSP is cause for concern.

I'd take the 185 game experience of Sam Frost ahead of either but would have Phillips ahead of Blight for our needs.

Which is where the Saints are headed with a rocket

Bits and pieces

Lij well and truly burnt bridges internally, even if no takers there is a chance he goes.

Davies, already made a few sit up a bit straighter. Will hold everyone to account, question, probe and call out things out. If he sees something, he will fix it. Lloyd was very supportive and was the ultimate collaborator, but not decisive.

Fraser, given a license to change forward structure and strategy. Like this move. Hansen in the back half will give us more of the same and Clarkes role is very much stoppage focussed and not ball movement or transition oriented. Skipworth as reported has been a big target.

Huge focus on building out depth so if a Charlie to swans deal happens expect players and picks.

GW made a number of redundancies (4 I think), will have a new sports physiologist and there will be a new role reporting to GW focussed on Data, Tech and analytics.

Fingers crossed the Lij bridges can be mended for a shot at redemption. No takers means we collaborate to get the best results for EH & the team, and that’s him performing out on the park (tight leash off it) for the CFC.

I've been saying it for months we need to find a Gardiner/ Payne type and I'm sure the club know this and honestly if we had to consider May for a yr or two I would do it

Im hoping Elijah stays somehow. He's just too talented in a position we desperately need filled to watch walk out the door for nothing.

Obviously that may still be on the cards but if we could get his head back in the game he'd be a massive inclusion next year.
Like seriously he needs his family and close friends to pull his ****ing head in and take the opportunity he has and take life seriously

We through Matthew Watson to the wolves and whether he was up to it or not I don’t think he ever recovered. 😬

So, as it stands, the following players are in limbo.
Curnow
McGovern
Elijah
Flyn Young
White
2 x Irish lads

Any word on these players? Thoughts welcome. Draft/player swap conjecture also welcomed..
It seems Monahan has signed an extra year and Duffy would already have been contacted into 26 as this was his first year.

Shades of 2011...

Please be Walsh signs a long term contract🙏
Reckon GW and co. knew a long way out that TDK was on the way out, JSOS too.

Curnow only adds to the currency we have - reckon they identified a few A graders early in the year and that we'll land one, at least.

Humphrey would be a cherry on top of that...

I’m still hoping for if we were to trade Charlie to turn that into Bailey Humphrey coming in.

Losing SOS, TDK and potentially Charlie we need to bring someone in of significance to help Vossy going into 2026.

Humphrey has the talent and potential to be the best player in the game that’s how highly I regard him and I’d seriously offer him a contract of $10m for 8 years to convince him to come over.

If we were able to do a three way trade that brings us Humphrey, Hayward and a future first that would be great. Just hope we are aggressive and attacking our targets and it sounds like we really want Humphrey regardless of what happens with Charlie.

I’m also hoping Hickmott is still a possibility to add to our coaching group. I have a feeling if we do add a senior assistant of the calibre of a Hickmott, Skipworth or Kelly that GW has a long term vision if things don’t go well with Vossy next year he has his next senior coach in our senior assistant which I’m hoping is Adrian Hickmott.
no question a three (or even four) way trade is best suited to keep all parties involved happy.

If we end up losing Charlie to Sydney, but end up with Butters and humphrey/haywood, lovely! ;)

(plus some assorted picks...)

We’ve been fed a lie by the club, it’s patently clear all of our big guns are being very well remunerated which makes me even more angry when you hear reports they are disillusioned with the club for moving on the likes of Kennedy and not replacing with like for like.
The reason that is is because they’re all taking up way too much of the salary cap.
The other big problem was we failed miserably pre 2023, when we should have been making finals from 2020 onwards and making hay while the contract sun shines where your guns are cheaper pre free agency contract years and said guns would take less seeing they are constantly in contention.
So, I ask the question again, who would you have moved on to create flexibility in the cap?

Sam Frost light years in front if we go down that path. He plays a role, May would be competing with Weiters to be the man. Would not be good for development. May only excels when allowed to play loose as the interceptor, and his best is behind him. Massive no from me.

Frost a great option.
Blight a better option with the age and scope to supersede Young as our Mr Fixit swingman.
A couple of journeymen could be considered including our own VFL option Phillips.

Weitering, O’Farrell and Dean is a mouthwatering combo going forward, although a Weiters replacement will need to be developed in the not too distant future (a stopper with HOF and HD would work well, with Khamis to maybe play a hybrid role. Bearing in mind Carroll is 190cm and Cowan can play taller if required)

Just as an aside when recruiting, HOF does have some forward credentials, destined to be a great defender, but could easily be a superb CHF is the opportunity/need arises.

I wish I had your optimism. I definitely used to, but have sadly grown out of it.

Actually on second thoughts, these levels of optimism are probably dangerous.
