Re: 'Alleged' rumours resurfacing ...

Folks, this is the way things are here.

Posters are responsible for what they post. Moderators can not attest to the accuracy or otherwise of any rumour posted.

Moderators will intervene for a couple of reasons.

1. If a thread is threatening to be derailed because of a post.

2. If invested parties request the removal of material.

None of this draws a conclusion as to the accuracy or otherwise of the original post.

There is no need to further speculate. What will be will be.

Also, you need to remember that this thread like all parts of this forum is bound by the rules of poster conduct. If you want to express skepticism towards a rumour that's fine, but having a crack at posters who are contributors to this forum is simply not on and will be acted upon.

Simply put, don't be a dick.

Thanks all!

Curnow to Geelong, Bailey Smith to Port

I’m still hoping for if we were to trade Charlie to turn that into Bailey Humphrey coming in.

Losing SOS, TDK and potentially Charlie we need to bring someone in of significance to help Vossy going into 2026.

Humphrey has the talent and potential to be the best player in the game that’s how highly I regard him and I’d seriously offer him a contract of $10m for 8 years to convince him to come over.

If we were able to do a three way trade that brings us Humphrey, Hayward and a future first that would be great. Just hope we are aggressive and attacking our targets and it sounds like we really want Humphrey regardless of what happens with Charlie.

I’m also hoping Hickmott is still a possibility to add to our coaching group. I have a feeling if we do add a senior assistant of the calibre of a Hickmott, Skipworth or Kelly that GW has a long term vision if things don’t go well with Vossy next year he has his next senior coach in our senior assistant which I’m hoping is Adrian Hickmott.

He's simply not worth that kind of deal at this point. Good player, but many here are absolutely over rating him at the moment. It would be utterly irresponsible of the club to offer that deal.

I'll be interested to see if E Hollands is at the B&F tonight. I assume he will be but a bit of a story if he isn't.

If they can announce a Walsh resigning that would be such a fantastic message and a real boost to morale. The message can be a new beginning starts tonight.

I'd rather us get a plug and play key back for the next 2 - 3 years while O Farrell and Dean develop. Sam Frost would be the one for me as I like his aggression. I'd also throw Burton a lifeline as depth options playing slightly taller.

Humphrey is the dream. If we lose Curnow, getting a young gun with superstar potential coupled with picks for Cody would send this board into overdrive.
I’d be going after Frost or Jacob Blight.

In Frank we trust

Starts as a bit of fun amongst supporters and before you know it …

Trust that Wright, Davies and Austin see things through more rational eyes than supporters.
Frank and Fogarty are honest enough types but really not the answer as Geelong and Port have previously discovered …

Surprised we’re not looking at Jacob Blight. 2 x Jacob’s as KPD’s plus he has some versatility to rotate through other positions, including ruck.

Ethan Phillips potentially but that he failed to shoot the lights out last SSP is cause for concern.

Didnt someone say yesterday he was training with the club already?

Brother. Did you watch his last month and a bit.

He never played like that at Geelong or Port

Which big name were you prepared to let go at the time, we had no spare cash 💰
This is the problem, we balanced the books with no wriggle room to add anything when we were only a mid table side, spent the cap and draft capital on guys like mcgovern, cerra, saad, williams when we were not yet in the window which left us no room in 2023 when we finally got into the window to add cream.

Poor drafting for years after the big 3 draft didn't help but if we had of picked up a cheaper option and drafted a few kids to add to the list that turned into something we could have built cap space to add cream on top in 23.

Butters to Carlton is extremely unlikely... even if he does in fact request a trade back to Victoria...

These are the factors to consider:

  • Port don't have to trade him, he's still contracted for next year
  • Argument is made they get more for him as a "pre-agent"... but as a RFA, Port have the option to match any bid... highly unlikely they won't, forcing a trade anyway.
    • Should a club not satisfy Port at the trade table... he either stays or nominates for the draft... we all know that isn't happening...
  • What it would take to convince Butters?
    • We are on a downward trajectory... like it or not, that's reality -> 3rd, 8th, 11th...
    • Core group in their late 20's/30's... they aren't going to get better with age
    • So the appeal of success is not on our side
    • Therefore the contract must be MASSIVE and when I say that, I'm talking the biggest contract possibly in AFL history... do we really want to do that?
    • Let's say we do... 2.1M for 8 years (hypothetically) ... I wonder what Sam Walsh will think about that...
  • What would it take to satisfy Port?
    • Charlie to Geelong, Smith to Port... hahahaha
    • Like it or not, Butters will cost more than Charlie... what else are we able to trade and are we prepared to do that?
    • Port want picks for next year, they have their sights on Cochrane and will try and move heaven and Earth to get their hands on him...
    • We absolutely cannot afford to give up 2026 first round picks otherwise we miss out on Walker...

TLDR; while it would be awesome to recruit Butters... how many of you are prepared to potentially lose Charlie and Walsh whilst also making life a lot more difficult to match the Cody Walker bid?

If Butters wants to come to Carlton it would be in both parties best interests to wait 12 months.

Not sure on that. The new DVI changes (if the AFL ever bloody announce the stupid things) will mean Port, like us, would be at least forced to consider changing their tactic and loading up on some young talent this year as they'll have no way of targeting anyone outside of Cochrane (if they get access to him) in 2026. Then they've got Pilot, Salopek and Rodan in 2027 who will annihilate every pick they've got for about 3 years if they're to match all of them on current projections.

I think it could be in play this year purely because it's going to be so much harder to get these NGA and F/S talents in coming years now.

Personally, I don’t see the need to bring in Butters (at the cost in trades and wages). Great player, no doubt, but we’ve already drafted in Jagga to develop into our Butters. What we really need are players with burst and genuine kicking ability to complement our extractors.
