Without question, based on what they’ve actually delivered on field, Oscar Allen is the most overrated footballer in the comp. It doesn’t mean he’s not a decent fit for Lions, as they only need him to play a few decent games and hopefully win them a final or two.

But seriously … he’s had 1 x good season in his entire career.

He’s played 105 games for 198 x goals and goal assists at 1.89 per game.

Mihocek is 332 goals and goal assists at 2.09 per game.

Mabior Chol is 203 at 1.88 … and he spend decent chunks in the ruck.

I know he’s played a few game in defence…. but it beggars belief he’s getting eagles pick-2. It’s worse than McKay and Frawley compo.

A few points:
-Oscar has spent more than a few games in defence (and ruck for that matter). A lot of his early career was spent playing in defence when Kennedy and Darling were our KPFs so judging his output on goals and goals assists per game is not a good metric

-He’s been serviced by the least skilful midfield I can recall; having guys like McCluggage, Zorko etc hitting him lace out will improve his game immensely given his main attributes are leading patterns, excellent hands and generallt pretty good goal kicking

Is pick 2 overs? Yes, I think we can all acknowledge that but he’s a far better player than MacKay and Frawley. He will thrive in Brisbane if he makes it there

So hang on … Tier 2 is $800k over 5-years, and you’re saying Eagles would match that happily and Oscar would love to stay? Makes zero sense.

Otherwise, why wouldn’t the Eagles have offered that to him already and why didn’t Allen accept it? He’s played one good season his career, so he thinks $4m over 5-years is an unreasonable offer?

Or did the Eagles not offer Allen anything resembling an acceptable contract knowing a competitor would make an offer to unlock pick-2?

If Allen desperately wanted to stay then it’s pretty clear your club was happy to shaft their captain and his family to get pick-2.

No I never said WCE would happily match a band 2 offer, I just said they would match a band 2 offer. It would be unhappily. Oscar however, would be very happy with that.

Yes in my view WCE made an offer they knew Oscar wouldn't accept, hoping to get a band 1 offer via FA and therefore attain pick 2. I think they were ruthless about moving Oscar on and it should have been better. Having said that, as you point out Oscar’s output hasn’t been as good as we’d hoped (mainly due to injury) but he has been paid extremely well for that output and it wouldn’t be unreasonable for him to accept less this time around.

I really didn’t intend for Oscar Allen to hijack what’s a pretty good thread to discuss your potential draftees so let’s just leave it at that until Bonnie Clarke hands over pick 16 for Starcevich and our entire board (myself included) goes into meltdown.

Grlj a surely lock for the Tigers after his testing? CDT, Robey or X Taylor with the other pick IMO.

Brisbane should just walk away from allen and get the compo pick back for starcevic it's going to be more then what wce are currently offering for a trade and they can save on cap space as they'll have some youngsters that will need contract upgrades.

They won’t get any compo for Starcevich regardless of Oscar because they already attained Draper via FA band 2.

The Allen FA will get done. However it is fun reading the WC board and how they are freaking out about how the paperwork hasn't been lodged yet.

the leverage is with eagles. FA for Allen has to happen before window closes on Friday. Trade period doesn't finish until following Wednesday. so, all eagles have to do is wait. after Friday, if we get pick 2, we can get Starcevich for fish and chips.

Think they're trying too get out of it.
Maybe both sides are.
West Coast want this FA (Allen) deal to go through but it's possible that Brisbane are getting cold feet and use not being able to get the compo for Starcevich as a reason as to why they could not get the deal done for Allen. It would look very bad for Brisbane to be seen to be backing out on an offer they've made. I think it will be done but it would be great for us if it backfired.

Brisbane signed Draper already. Any compo for the lions will be reduced as a result if they got any compo at all for Starcevich.

The afl, in their infinite wisdom, understood when they wrote the rules that you could exchange cap space created by losing a player for a new player that season instead of compo. Somehow they couldn’t work out that a team can also use that created cap space in 12 months and therefore need compo if no fa comes in. 🤦🏻

Reckon Eagles will give Brisbane what they want. Pick 2 is too valuable for them to hold firm on.

If Eagles didn't care about band 1 they would have already matched the Allan bid to begin with, reckon this is what Brisbane is banking on.

End of the day Brisbane list is good enough that having Allan or not having him wouldn't bother them. Doesn't look great but I guess this way it's a chance for them to say, well we tried sorry Oscar.

Brisbane are being campaigners, it surprises me but I guess that's why they are the best club in the comp right now.
How are Brisbane being campaigners???

Wc not getting pick 2 just means we’re very likely to get some tempting offers to split for CDT. Can’t see us taking him. If we don’t intend to split or take CDT then nothing much changes.
Id say its still more than likely that they get pick 2.
FWIW i think we'd take CDT if he was on the board. You take best available that high.
We can't F around like Norf have.

I forgot about Draper, if its 900k that's been offered to starcevic, would that completely offset Drapers if his was like 750-800k? That would that result in like a band 4 or 5 at all?

I don’t know what Draper’s offer is TBH so can’t really comment but two FA offers even remotely close will offset each other, which I suspect would be the case here.

Top 10 combine results should be released soon for those interested. Not expecting any surprises other than Phillipou not testing as well as thought, but he’s well down from where your picks land unless you split.

draper has signed with Lions and Essendon will receive compo if one googles it so it must be law, lol

Just say Allen stays at WC and Starvecich goes even via pre-season.

Brisbane has more cash, is it the worst result?? they have Draper and they cannot play three rucks and extra space would be handy with youngsters developing down the track

Brisbane can worry about picks or focus on academy and a little other thing called premierships

Sam Draper definitely ruck at 205.

Oscar 197

Ty Gallop 194 I think but looks like he plays taller

Starcevich is 188

If West Coast not happy they get Starcevich via pre-season potentially if signed and West Coast keep their pick and West Coast focused on draft and build anyway

Brisbane's engine room is their midfield. McInerney retired by the looks of it

If Oscar stays who could leave next year or another club, is that the worst scenario?? to me the situation is marginal and no massive fallout either way

Cynic in me says they've saved it for Twomey to talk about today on Trade Radio because there will be nothing else to talk about.

Twomey has flagged Poo as one of the guys we may trade down for.

Geez if you have a pick around his mark sure but I wouldn’t trade down for him unless you also got a F1 off bottom 10 side as well.

Actually. Call Brady.

Yeah I'd imagine if we were trading for 2 picks this year he'd be the 2nd one and say Grlj the first. Or alternatively the F1 will be the main piece.

Fortunately the Optus Oval surface is the softest in the league, and the odds of Starcevich bumping his head again in the next few years is incredibly slim 🙄
I don’t disagree re Optus Oval, but he was subbed off in the.GF due to concussion from a head knock sustained in a contest. I don’t think it happened because his head into the ground.

It’s risky recruiting a player with an ongoing problem with concussion.

Giving Starcevich a 5/6 yr contract has to be one of the most irresponsible moves in the history of AFL trading

but it is Matt Clarke so, anything is possible

Philipou did well in vertical jump test. Don’t know other results yet

OK...back on track with what this forum is about....

More and more I an favouring splitting pick-4. If Robey and Sharp are part of the 'top-4', then I worry about team balance and on-field opportunity if we get both, as to me it's almost certain Eagles take Duursma and CDT. And I don't believe we can take X Taylor, Grjl, Dovaston etc..at 4.

Round 1 2026....TT, Hopper and Prestia are all playing. We can talk about training form or promoting youth etc....all we like. But they are playing Round 1 and playing AFL every time they are fit.

Lalor and Hotton play every week without question. And ideally so do McCauliffe and Smillie.

So if we add Robey and Sharp, then how does that look into the future? (I haven't even included Jack Ross).

That's 7 x 'big-bodied' inside mids: TT, Hopper, McCauliffe, Smillie, Robey, Sharp and Lalor. How many realistically play each week? 5 or 6 at a pinch? And if you play 6, then do Hotton or Seth Campbell get any midfield minutes at all?

So to me in an ideal world it's Robey at pick-3 and split pick-4 for let's say pick-10 and a F1 from a mid-low ranked team. That gets us one of Grjl, Dovaston, X Taylor at pick-10, and shores up our future options in relation to a stronger draft hand and/or trade end of 2026, depending on our 2026 on-field performance.

Robey ran a 3.118 sec 20 metre (slower than Smillie) & 6:45 (also worse than Smill)

Grlj ran a 2.931 second 20m on top of his 5:59 2km
