Just imagine how big our war chest is if Saints have all this room.
It's gonna be large and we're banking cap, add next year and look out!

There's definitely a plan in place going by Hartley's comments that we'll be hitting hard next year and possibly the year after.

Whose mum was it?
Probably not the thread for it

But as an un related question what’s the name of the job of the person who carries a golfers clubs around?

Also anyone who listens to Trade Radio has problems 😂

Mental short people who wouldn’t know what the hell is happening. Where there is more ads than content.
I popped on for a short listen today. Old mate Damo didnt have the foggiest clue how free agency worked when trying to work out why Collingwood wouldn’t get compo for a 33 year old Mihocek leaving 🤣

Atleast they have punted Cooney though. That ****ing clown was just a waste of everyone’s time

Damo said today Flanders was worth a late-20’s pick, not pick-7. In 2024 Flanders averaged 30-disposals per game playing mid…. Late-20’s is crazy talk.

so basically essendon’s ceo was like “guys drugs are bad mmmkay” and some essendon players were like “how dare he lecture us on this” so some of them (zach merrett probably) had a whinge to the aflpa because their nose beers should be private and now zach’s management have leaked this to tom because essendon have decided to stand firm on trading him

So what you are saying is that Yze had a fabulous year of coaching to get us that many wins with the team he had on the park? Because at the end of the day it's all about wins.

It's all eye of the beholder stuff & like a lot of things in life, there can be many truths all at once.

Was it impressive we won 5 games this season? yes of course, it was more than I was expecting. Did i find the style how we won impressive? not overly. It was really ugly and too often relied on the oldest 10 players carrying most of the weight.

I just look at certain things we are doing and think its a bit uninspiring. Instead of re-signing Prestia for example, we could have tried to bring in Jack Steele who will likely cost next to no draft capital. He is much younger, more reliable & still a very good leader & could provide support for several more years. We could be taking the risk on JUH and getting him for free as well. We are just holding the line. I also think the club should have been vocal against the Eagles getting a compo pick - its basically cost them pick 2 to become pick 4. They just seem meek & uninspired & gotta be honest, that does appear to be how the club will operate under this new regime. Dimma, Balme, Peggy & Gale didn't win us 3/4 by being meek & uninspiring - they were bold.

This is a silly take based on a bunch of factors.

Richmond hasnt gone hard enough on FAs...

We specifically went the other way last season, so that we would load up on a super draft... to get these FA, it would have compromised our draft hand, which in turn would have been a short term sugar hit to the detriment of long term development.

Teams around us are getting better west coasts draft hand this year compared to ours last year... lol

... quite simply... Richmond hasn't been an attractive FA destination due to our rebuild. Of course, a side like St kilda are more attractive destination, due to having a better list/ladder position. Why would a FA go to us... and be in the bottom 4 for a couple of years, when they could go to the saints, get paid a bucket and probably play finals.

We had what, 10 picks over 2 years in the top 20? To get 2 top flight FA ot would have cost a minimum of 3 of those... to finish where? 12th to 16th over the next 3 years and then have no picks in the compromised drafts?

No it wouldn't. I'm talking about getting in cheap Free Agents who provide 3-5 year coverage., They would not have cost us anything. How is this so hard to comprehend? Carlton's B&F winner this year was a guy they got for literally nothing 3 years ago through Free Agency (Hewitt). Ironically of all the players Calrton have picked up via trades, its actually Hewitt who won the B&F - not Cerra, Saad, McGovern etc. Moves like that, or taking risk on a JUH type are completely gettable without affecting our draft. I've explained this several times ffs - i would not have done anything which cost us our picks - i would have just used Free Agency & trade period to get players available who won't cost us the picks.

Word is Jack Steele might want out of StKilda & he will cost next to no draft capital. Would you rather have Prestia or Jack Steele on your list? I'd say Jack Steele without a 2nd thought - he is a better player, younger & has played over double the amount of games than Dion over the past 5 years. He is also a better leader - literally a Captain, something the club desperately needs - strong on-field leadership.

I never said once we had to target top Free Agents. Never. W

100% correct. Our improvement this year was not a sign of linear improvement.

I really can't see the club genuinely improving for 2-3 years - I think we'll likely be asking for a compo package sooner than later too. And i can almost guarantee we wont get it either

Lets just go through the league.
Geelong, Lions, Giants, Suns, Dogs, Hawks, Freo, Adelaide, Swans are all teams we are not going to get better than in the next 3 years. Miles ahead of us.

Port & Pies might get worse, but with Daicos & Butters I don't see them getting "Richmond/North" bad. Both teams will use Free Agency to ensure that doesn't happen & still have a hell of a lot more going on with their list to suggest they can be "good now" some weeks. People are writing off the Pie's, but lets be real here. Do you really think they wont play finals next year? I wouldn't beat against it

Eagles are going to have pick 2,3 plus 3-4 other picks in the top 30, while also adding 2 starting KPD's in Young & Starsavich. They are going to get better.

North, just logically, have to get better with the age of their group

Saints have hit Free Agency hard and will be better

Carlton are maybe going to get worse, but with Weitering , McKay, Walsh, Jagga, Cerra, Cripps, Saad - they are not going to get as bad as us. They had a terrible year, but that midfield still has top 5 in the league potential based on age, talent etc.

Essendon might get worse, granted. But that is just 1 team. With Draper & possibly Merrett going tho, they are going to likely end up with 3, possibly 4 top 10 picks.

Teams around us are getting better i mean. Eagles are going to have a better draft hand than we had last year this season. Saints are going to be way better. North will likely get better (they can't get worse).

I think come the end of 2027, we could be talking about how Richmond hasn't won more than 5 games in a season for 4 years & with Tassie taking over the draft - i think we are in deep shit. Club needed to be far more bold than we have been imo
Not sure of your logic. Club absolutely smashed the draft last year in a draft which is looking really strong. Club getting in with top end/quality draft picks before Tassie come in. Will grab another two good players in this draft. it's all working perfectly. Think Hawks re-build. Adelaide's but quicker. 2027+ we will bring in quality players and also role players to fill needs. Players via trade and players not costing draft capital via free agency. Once we get established in the 8 we won't be coming down for a while. We will keep topping up like cats and lions. Players will want to come to Tigerland. Blair is a great operator and he will shine again when his chance comes when our focus is less on the draft. Stars are aligning wonderfully. We have all the key talls (apart from ruck) we need (the positions that take the longest to develop). We are on track if not ahead. No playing catch up and over paying for KPD & KPF like north.

I haven't disagreed with the draft approach, i've just said there is 3-4 different ways to rebuild.

Draft
Trade
Free-Agency
Rookie Draft

Use all of them. There is no rule that you can;'t be draft focused and still bring in players via Trade, FA etc. Use the rookie draft to get in new (smaller) players each year, as they tend to have a higher success rate Vs bigs.

The club should be in the market for every bargain basement moneyball type player it can get their hands on & instead seem to be acting like they are only able to take 1 approach at a time.

2021 - we hit the draft hard
2022-23 - We traded away all our picks
2024 - we hit the draft hard
2025 - we hit the draft hard.

We, literally, have take a singular strategy every season for the past 5 years. And the results from that so far have been incredibly predictable. If the clubs rebuild is around the club challenging again by 2030, then we are deadsmack on target, but thats a ****ing long rebuild. Teams like Brisbane, Geelong have shown us you can use ALL the systems in place to remain great - you don't have to yo-yo & do it all the hard way. And FWIW, if this was me making the calls - we would not have both Hopper & Taranto - i only wanted 1 (Taranto) & wanted the club to keep its first rounders. I am a strong believer that you never trade away a future first rounder on the premise that you are going to be "good" - only on the premise that the other team thinks you are going to be terrible (so that they potentially over-value the pick).

If the club had not taken Hopper , this season a player like Jack Steele would be incredibly appealing as he will very likely provide you the same, possibly better, output than Hopper and would only cost you a 3rd rounder + his contract. The clubs strategy of offering 7-year contracts to players who have only shown glimpses of potential to be elite is another odd decision for me. It now means we are likely stuck with Hopper, no matter what. For another club to take him we would have to give him away for free & still likely have to eat a portion of his contract to play elsewhere. We are now looking down the barrell of Balta becoming the same kind of "negative" list asset if he can't sort his shit out.

I just don't like the strategy we are doing overall. I 100% agree with the way we are approaching the draft, but everything else - i think we are doing a pretty poor job. The draft is the only thing we are doing right IMO

Shorted sighed. Picking players like steele will get us to mid table and thats it. We need to commit to the rebuild not cheap wins next year

Before saying anything else about Jack Steele, please be aware the Saints supporters grew to hate Steele over the last 24-months. Trust me, we don’t want Steele … he’s 25% slower than both TT and Hopper.
