It's all well and good to say we'll just sit tight and not do anything this off-season. But the reality is, there are super compromised drafts coming from 2027 (not to mention the prospect of also losing players to Tassie), and if we haven't sufficiently added to the team by then we'll just fall even further behind.
im not sure we are just sitting tight!

I'm wondering if we trade our 2nd rounders out for maybe 3-4 goes at the 5th round?
Given our track record of second rounders, I’d feel just as comfortable selecting in the 5th round.

The issue with the trade wasn't the thinking of Whitlock now + future second vs quality of first round of draft in future, it was that the club genuinely expected we'd be better than bottom four and we weren't. It was a trade based on hopes and what ifs rather than a proper understanding of what the team and coaches were capable of in 2025.

Well put. The point about this trade is that we don't need another 18 year old midfielder for our list. Which is what pick 3 would have been used on. We need key position players. So who in this year's draft would we have taken at 3 who would be better for us than Whitlock? And where are they likely to be drafted? We didn't need pick 3, we got the player we needed plus an extra early second rounder which can be used on another of the best Key Position players available in this draft.
On the proviso that Whitlock comes on as expected it was a very smart trade.

Well, I do know that he has some of the genetics to put on fat muscle.

The strategy would be to have the base built by then and be in a position to get ready made players come to us because we are on the rise. Sounds like a decent plan but we will see if we can hit the timeline.

I don't understand why our performance or lack thereof this year impacts the value of this trade. If we were going to make the trade anyway, it doesn't matter if it became pick 3 or pick 7, we weren't going to have it either way. And we got Richmond's 2nd rounder and they finished below us.

of course that goes without saying..... doesnt matter how they get on the list, how old they are... they all compete for the 23 spots available weekly, pretty simple

You just don't want to clog your list up with more players like Fisher, Tucker, CCJ, Stephens, Logue, Corr on long contracts. And long contracts is the only way we get them.

Someone recruiting for our VFL team has been clued up enough to get in 2 players who have made their way to AFL lists. Trembath and Lord. That's one a year plucked from nowhere. We need use that to our advantage.

I think the most frustrating thing about Logue is that he could be what we need just was not committed (on the face of it) this year

If he can get back to what he was pre knee, then absolutely. He just looked so far off it this year.

The more you look at this draft, the less agitated I am by the trading out of that first pick last year.

The real question is if Matt Whitlock was on the open market today, would Pick 3 in return for Whitlock and a second rounder be market value?

On face value its overs. But if the draft evens out that later pick might get you a a good player.

Also if we had 3, we know we would most likely just pick another midfielder, so I have sort of come to terms with it.

Over to Mr Whitlock to become that key position player we all hope he can be.
Absolutely, I think the other point sometimes missed on the trade is that Richmond were the first team to bite at pick 27, which is an indicator of where the market was for picks in last year's draft versus this year.

Sydney, Brisbane, GWS and even Richmond with the four previous picks, weren't willing to trade those picks for our future first, which by the very definition says we paid the market price when the trade was finally agreed upon.

If we did pay absolute massive overs for the pick, then surely by that logic, Sydney, Brisbane and GWS are guilty of missing a massive free hit for not fleecing us when they had the opportunity earlier.

I also think there isn't enough value placed on being able to take the pick a year earlier. Even if we could pick up the exact equivalent of Whitlock and a second rounder for pick 3 this year, particularly with a tall, the extra year of development he has had being 12 months into the system needs be factored in when assessing the value of the trade.
