2025 Draft Order

Current Draft Picks:
Round 1: 1, 2, 13
Round 2: 34, 41
Round 3: 53, 58 (These picks are in excess of available list spots so will be forfeited if we don’t consolidate our 2025 picks up the order or trade some for future picks)

List Spots Available (39 of 48):
• Main list (33 of 38) - 5* (in: Starcevich, Young out: Allen, Ryan, Chesser, Hunt, Petruccelle, Jamieson)
• Cat A rookie list (5 of 8) - 3* (in: Robertson (pending), out: Rawlinson)
• Cat B rookie list (1 of 2) - 2 (out: Livingstone)

* Based on Dewar being upgraded after the maximum 3 years on the rookie list. Hutchinson may also have been upgraded but this isn’t confirmed - if it is we will have 4 main and 4 rookie list spots open

* Matthew Clarke has stated we have 5 main list spots

Matt Clarke wraps up the trade period - 6PR

I was critical of Clarke last year for promising something we did not have. Hawks deliberately played hard ball and we were left with few options but to over pay to Tigers.

Congratulations Matty - you have learnt from your mistake. We now have completed the most important business and we can now play the controlling hand in the next 2 deals.
Call me hopelessly optimistic (many have), but I wonder if Clarke effectively had a non negotiable 'deliver Baker (and thereby Graham) for the new coach' instruction/mentality.

Not to rehash the whole affair, but he has had a much better start to trade period #2, both in terms of what he has said through the media and now landing this Starcevich deal in a quick and fair manner.

Could have just been one where delivering the outcome last year was more important to him/the club/Mini than extracting maximum value, leaving us sour on how it all went down and worried about his ability more broadly.

I suspect we'll find out which deal was the anomaly based on his upcoming work with Ryan, Chesser, Young etc

So give in for a F3. It would also mean with multiple R1 and needing a KPD don’t get tempted at 2 which will be after at least 2 Suns prospects and right wh
Carlton are a complete mess. Go hard on them.
Didn't know, but looked up that Brian Cook is finishing up/already finished at the club this year.
Same thing as Essendon, behind the scenes/board,(with zero idea about footy), run the show.
(and feel entitled because of the club they support)

*the internal politics at the Bombers, even pre drug issues, is worthy of a Succession-like Netflix series.

My biggest wish herein is not to take CDT in top 2

Outside of that:
1. draft at least two mids in our first three picks
2. don't relinquish pick 1. pick 2 for right price only
3. trade up from 12 to GC pick
4. don't give up more for Young than we get for Chesser
5. pick for ryan must begin with a 2
6. successful matching of Williams, Evans & Banfield
7. as much as we need mids, after our early picks we still need to take a balanced view. There's only so many mids we can play.

Sorry to intrude but Harry would do pretty well in your side I reckon. He was always pretty good at Crows, good speed and kick for goal, but pushed out by Soligo.

Did his achilles and never got back to senior footy although was doing well in SANFL
I've also heard from people in Adelaide that he's a massive douchebag.

But wait I can go one better.

Trade 13, 34 & 38 for pick 7

Trade 2 and future second (saints) for 5,6

Pick 1 Duursma WC
Pick 2 CDT Bombers
Pick 3 Grlj Tigers
Pick 4 Robey Tigers
Pick 5 Sharp WC
Pick 6 Cumming WC
Pick 7 Schubert WC
This is my ideal outcome, if we pull this off with those players we are the off season premiers.

Apologies if someone has already done this.
After doing the sums with points value, and I know that is not everything, it seems we paid 699 points (the equivalent of pick #22) for Starcevich. I guess that is ok. Have I missed something?

Nope, you haven't miss anything, thats pretty well spot on what we wanted to pay.

Not many teams are going to be interested in any picks after the 30's this year. And we still can get pick 6 easily enough or one or 2 of ESS picks by splitting 1 or 2, using 12 and/or using future picks if we want. Our F2 is pretty valuable next year assuming we dont progress up the ladder. Even our F3 wouldnt be bad next yea

I’ve had Flynn ahead of BW for two years but with the new jumping rule and fast ball up I think that’s going to favour BW.
you forget that the current rule came in in 2024. BW was still crap before that, and I think Flynn gets around the ground better than BW certainly if marks taken are any guide.

Agreed, but one of those will stay with the Suns so there’s a very clear avenue to getting a top 8 pick regardless of which they send. Surely they’re not sending both.

As for matching, our bundle of 13+34+38 is worth 1717.

Only 8 clubs have that many points in total, let alone in a viable range to move around (e.g Richmond have enough but Picks 3 and 4 do nothing in this conversation). One of those eight is GC themselves. As of today, there’s very few clubs who can enter into this discussion.

Only Essendon have a viable path to coming close (21, 27, 30 = 1708). Maybe that changes after more deals are made, but we still have Ryan and Chesser to go through as well.

Going to be a fun draft day, for sure.
They have their academy kid Adam Swied they will need one of those picks for.

Will all slide by 1 and still less than 13,34,38 and Suns have to give Fiorini and don’t have the same bidding threat.

If Merrett gets traded we’re probably cooked and should pivot to Carlton’s pick.
and not take Adam Swied their academy kid?

There’s new rules next year. You won’t find a single post from me saying we should pick BW over Flynn until now. No issue if we stick with Flynn and see how it plays out with the new rules.

We don't have the list spots for them. We get to take selections in the tier above.

Dont we?

Out: Allen, Chesser, Ryan, Sheed, McGovern, Hunt, Petro, Rawlings, Jamieson

In : McCarthy and Newton

Thats 7 freed up spots plus 4 new rookie spots.

11 list spots available.

Starc, Yound and Dev reduce that to 8 list spots to add players in the drafts or DFA's.

Picks 1, 5, 6, 13, 33, 37 and 52 is only 7. Leaves an 8th spot for a rookie / SPP selection.

We can push players onto the rookie list if needed.

So we have the spots to select 7 players in the draft.

The "problem" is others feel those picks could've been better used elsewhere.

Like Fivey said, we had a lot of leverage here and came out of it in a very meh situation. Helped others get what they want.

Is it awful? No. Is it good? Also no.

And we didnt get anything we wanted?

Geez the negative nancies on here are a drain.

Every year teams spend 2nd rounders to upgrade their 1sts by 1 or 2 places. For a reason.

16 plus 23 got us a 4 pick upgrade.

22 landed Starc plus 33 plus 52.

But people cant see why we did it. More like their minds are already made up and complaining is the default response.

The very same people will want Essendon to give us 5,6 for 1 or we have been shafted.

And also would have been complaining that pick 22 was worth nothing and will be 30 after academies and compo in a weak draft.

And ignore the fact that 33 and 52 will probably come in heavily on draft night with so many picks ahead of them packaged to match bids.
