2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

I hope

I hope you’re right but am placing none of my hopes at all on Max King. He’s one significant injury away from being an injury bust. If he comes good it’s a bonus not an expectation. The club should start planning contingencies for a forward set up without him.
After watching the very short vid of King running, I can see why they recruited Aleer/JSOS. Fair chance Caminiti will be needed as a full time fwd next year.

I just want to get to round 1 with a fully fit list. A big pre season in everyone.
Yep. A clean bill of health at round 1 and we build from there. I think the chemistry of Wilkie & SOS will be as important as any factor next year and the more games they can play together early on, the better we’ll be when the big games roll around.

Oh, I just realised what most of you already knew, I'm an idiot.

I kept saying Eagles are crazy for giving the Lions a leg up with the Starcevich trade, despite the Lions nabbing 2 FREE agents and Annable for cheap. Especially when pick 1 in the PSD is available to use.

Only now have I realised they are holding West Coast to ransom with Oscar Allen. 'Look after us and we'll manipulate the deal to ensure you get pick 2', that's the only reason why the deal hasn't been put in to the AFL isn't it?

Maybe free agency and trade windows shouldn't run concurrently?

Take the media narrative about us with a pinch of salt. Negativity gets clicks. The only people interested in reading positive spin about us are St Kilda supporters, of which there are few.

There are 17 clubs fan bases who want to read about how we’re on the verge of imploding.

Of course - if he, the doctor, the club AND THE AFL thought he wasn't going to play in 2025.

A club can't just decide to place a player there because they might be injured for the rest of the season.

This is the process from the AFL rules and I have bolded the important bits.

26.2 Approval of the AFL(a) Where a Club proposes to transfer a Player from its Primary List to its Long TermInjury List, the following procedure shall apply:

(i) an Officer of the Club shall as soon as practicable, complete an“ Application for Inclusion on Long Term Injury List” in the form prescribed in Schedule 1 as Form 23 (“the Application”);

(ii) the Officer of the Club and the Club Medical Officer shall sign the Application;

(iii) the injured Player shall sign the Application as evidence of his consent to being transferred to the Long Term Injury List;

(iv) where the Club proposes to transfer a Player from its Rookie List to itsPrimary List to replace the injured Player on the Club’s Primary List, the Player from the Rookie List shall also sign the Application as evidence of his consent to the transfer;

(v) the Officer of the Club shall lodge the Application with the General Counsel, together with supporting medical evidence which verifies that the injured Player is suffering from a Long Term Injury;

(vi) the General Counsel may in his absolute discretion, approve or disapprove the transfer of the injured Player to the Club’s Long Term Injury List or require such further medical evidence, including without limitation a medical report from a duly qualified medical practitioner approved by the General Counsel, prior to determining whether to approve or disapprove the transfer; and(vii) where the General Counsel gives his approval, the injured Player shall from that time be deemed to be included on the Club’s Long Term Injury List and any Rookie List Player referred to on the Application shall be deemed to be included on the Club’s Primary List.

(b) The transfer of a Player to a Club’s Long Term Injury List or Primary List under this Rule 26.2 shall not take effect until the General Counsel has notified his approval under Rule 26.2(a). Where the General Counsel does not approve the transfer of the injured Player to the Club’s Long Term Injury List, he shall notify the Officer of the Club and the Application shall be of no effect.

26.3 ConsultationThe General Counsel may consult with the AFL Medical Director prior to exercising hisdiscretion to approve or disapprove the transfer of an injured Player to a Club’s LongTerm Injury List.

CAN WE PLEASE PUT THIS ARGUMENT TO BED?

ST KILDA HAD NO WAY OF HAVING A MID-SEASON DRAFT PICK.
There were ways.

King didn't play a game last year - so the medical assessments turned out to be wrong. Missed opportunity

Zaine Cordy's AFL career was over. He could have "retired" before the draft. Missed opportunity

Anyone else feeling uneasy this morning about the media driven Geelong narrative of Marshall being a salary dump?
Just ignore the media.

Yesterday they posted an article clearing up a rumour that no one had heard. They have too much air time to fill and not enough to talk about so most of what they talk about is nonsense.

Lots of Ifs there mate. But I agree on them all.

For me, it’s one specific thing that I haven’t seen in a Stkilda list in over 20 years. Infact 2004/5 would have been the last time.

It’s the depth. It’s the argument of who should be in our 23. It’s so many players significantly off their ceilings as players and the argument as to how to balance development and winning.

If every poster did a best 23. I’d be surprised if we have more than a handful with the exact same sides.

That’s the strength for me. That’s where Ross finally has to come into his own and coach every ounce of capability out of this list for the next 2 years.

We can make a fair argument that if the above occurs. We should have elite players on each line, because that is the level of potential we have.

Per Gubby.
TDK is an elite ruck in their eyes.
Flanders is an elite mid in their eyes.
JSOS is elite defender per statistics.

Over to you Ross.
Agree with Gubby with the elite assessment on TDK, Flanders and JSOS. This is not based on some fantasy stats which could be easily inflated (Marshall with around the ground marks and dump kicks for example). All 3 are proper smart footballers and elite skills in their position, I’ve seen TDK easily beat opponents consistently. The way he beats Gawn, Goldstein, Witts in the ruck so easily is impressive.

Last time I say it. You can’t force a player to sit out (or retire for that matter) if they think they can get back to play.

Given that players income can be tied to games played -both AFL & VFL - you’d open yourself up to more than just media scrutiny, you’d be on the end of a breach of employment law.

Seems to be the reality. They're already saying they hope he's training with the group by xmas. Sounds familiar. May already be an injury bust.

Can’t seriously be frustrated with the club for taking a cautious approach with King after trying to rush him back 3 times last year. I’d rather he not come back til Easter if it means we’re setting him up up for a career.

Honestly… if the dogs give a **** about having a proper crack before Libba retires, Treloar’s hammies explode and Bont ages out…

The smarter play is probably to hold Sanders for Tassie and fleece them for the picks they have to trade but they need a key defender probably more than any club has ever needed anything

Maybe they might be a chance for delisted free agent Liam Jones 🤨

Boy oh boy. No, there were not. Categorically.

This is ridiculous lol.

Players can suffer setbacks in injury return - do you know the medical assessments at the time were wrong?

And even if they were wrong, so what? There was still no way in knowing King would be out for the season at the time of the MSD.

And your Cordy argument? Absolute rubbish chat. You can't retire a player against their will.
