2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

In all the talk about the NAS effect it just struck me with what Flanders said in the club announcement. He talked about the passion of the fans. Standard I know but it shouldn't be lost in the vision and audio of that last quarter the impact of the fans that were there had on the whole set of events. It gave a glimpse into what a rocking Marvel stadium looks like. Not to be discounted...

My dad also hated Billings. Still jokes about him to this day lol. We use to joke that Billings always had this sickly look to his eyes like he had bubonic plague or Ebola.
I never get that “hating” a player thing. People generally don’t even know the person behind the player.
It’s such a very strong emotion.
Disappointed in etc is one thing.
But hating?

Giving away pick 7 for a player seems like the magic beans approach where we think we are close to prelims and just need to top up. Anyhew the die is cast now.

Haha you're always giving it up for a player, it's just whether you give it up for a potshot at an 18 year old who's the 10th best player in their draft class, or a much more likely 24 year old who's shown the ability to average 31 touches a game.

Instantly becomes our best 'pure' (not sure if NAS is?) midfielder, great to get him on board. Someone mentioned it earlier, but in a perfect world it has a bit of Lachie Neale about... moving to Brisbane for more mid opportunities at a similar age/profile, and we know what happened next. Having him, NAS, Windy as a core midfield with Pou, Hugo, Hugh coming through is exciting. Also - with players easily playing to 33yrs old+ these days, we should hopefully get 10 years of great football out of Sam.

I remember the 0 must go game against the cats in 09 round 14.

I’ve been to enough big games in Australia and round the world to know what genuine fever pitch and atmosphere is like, not too many things I’ve been to were better than that and from my recollection a lot of that 09-10 crowd work was very similar.

For me this trade depends entirely on how shit the draft is. Sounds like an overpay on paper but if there's truly not much talent available around the 7-15 bracket then it could be a win.
I'm not too fussed by us giving up that pick. You just know Dalrymple has his eye on some mystery player with all the intangibles who we end up taking at pick 50.

I think the club knows that we've now got the elite talent you get from early picks. We've just got to let them develop now.

Indeed, offering a 6 year deal to a guy that's had multiple head knocks seems ludicrous
I'm pretty sure they have changed the rules now- if you are forced into medical retirement like brayshaw and paddy- the payout comes out of an insurance fund and not counted under salary cap.
So not as risky as it looks
Flanders is 24 years old and fits a need in our midfield.
Plus- he's obviously very smart.
Turned down (presumably) well over a million bucks to play for us instead of the basketcase bombers.

Flanders S. ✅
De Koning T. ✅
Silvagni J. ✅
Aleer L. 👍
Ryan L. 👍
Humphrey B. ?

I'm pretty excited by the re-signings of existing talent and the new players coming in, but if I'm reading the post correctly, that last one is out of left field. Not sure why his last name is a "?" but I guess you can't be too careful.

I don’t think it’s as bad as some are making it out to be but I’d take Flanders over that pick in any draft.

We know he can play some elite football because we’ve seen him do it. Even it a deep draft we would be out of elite mid range with all the concessions.
