2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

Like Joel Selwood, Jordan Lewis, Paddy Ryder, Daniel Rich, Josh Caddy, Ollie Wines, Bailey Smith and Hayden Young?

St Kilda recently used FRP's on Nas, Phillipou and Tauru, all lower than 7.

Owens and Windhager were a lot lower, too...

Why don't you go look at who was drafted from pick 8 onwards, last time St Kilda traded their FRP. 2019.

Anyway, I've noticed a pattern here, since I started visiting this forum this year.

1. St Kilda does something
2. Neutral fans criticise it
3. St Kilda's fans on this forum think anyone who opposes it is a "miserable campaigner" and the only reasonable view is full support, otherwise you're a traitor who must be a Collingwood fan trolling the forum
4. Rinse and repeat
I've noticed a pattern on this forum too:

Certain miserable buggers are never happy, no matter what the club does.....

I'll be cheering louder than anyone. Decades of pain will do that.

I'm just not convinced trading FRPs for non-elite 24 year olds is a winning strategy.

Again, I'll be very happy if I'm proven wrong.
Absolutely no one thinks that trading FRPs for non-elite 24 years olds is a winning strategy.

The disagreement appears to be whether a certain 24 year old is elite or not. Reasonable minds can differ.

Flanders excites me and many others on here. But hey, my favourite movie is Sylvester Stallone’s “Stop, or my mom will shoot” so what would I know?

No ones calling you a traitor mate. But you're actively choosing to ignore the bigger picture and ignoring the strategy at play here:

1. We only have Nas for 2 more years atm, so we need to push for results to ensure he stays for longer.

2. Those draft picks you're referring to take 3-4+ years to develop. Nas only became "elite" this year, we're waiting on Pou to hopefully deliver and Tauru is young and raw. Windhager only stopped being known as a tagger at the back end of this year, and Mitch Owens is still a ways off.

3. When was the last time, St Kilda, a small market club in Melbourne, usually 6th choice for most players was able to recruit good (maybe not elite) players in their early 20's to come here? Flanders is 24 ffs. We're not hawks or geelong, players like Danger and Merrett aren't gonna nominate us are they?

4. This draft has been noted by many to already be a weak draft.

So with all due respect, pull your head out of your ass regarding this "FRP can never be traded" strategy. Its very obvious why the club did it and thats why people are having a go at you. Does that mean it'll work? No, but the logic is sound.
Get over yourself.

So possible left field players that could come our way this trade period (not in any order):

1) SDK
2) Humphrey
3) Cmac
4) De Goey (very tenuous)

Anyone else?

not sure how anyone could look at this, as a 23 year old in a stacked mid, and say hes not elite. Moved around heaps this year, stick him back where he belongs and look out. Imagine if a 23 year old that we drafted had a year like this?? we'd be losing our damn minds

Looks like a top 30-40 AFL player in 2024 based on coaches votes too

If he returns to even 80% of this form he's a steal

Yes, and many of those players came in stacked drafts... You are also forgettin that Flanders has delivered at the elite level, he has proved to be as good as (at his peak) many of those above and better than Caddy and Young.

Again, Flanders is a known quantity. Pick 7 isnt which is where the security lies.

Notwithstanding he was initially a pick 11 (which is where 7 will end up), and has had 5 years of development put into him which costs time and $.. so we get him for the same pick, in a shit draft. The logic is damn well sound

Outrageously sensible post, and included a golden line : "with all due respect, pull your head out of your ass"....ChatGPT will never match .

Anyone not happy with the Flanders trade sinply needs to do the following.

1. Determine where you think that pick will actually be taken, at earliest its 8, could be up at 12 or 13. Just pick a number and then look at every player taken at that pick over the last 20 years.

2. Count how many players end up being complete busts. You will find it's close to 50%.

3. Ask yourself, would you gamble a player that is at the very least super serviceable, for a 50% chance at a gun in 4 years time or a 50% chance for a list clogger.

People are getting too caught up on what pick 7 "could" be. But you need to look at it with a more rational approach.

Some of you blokes would be shithouse at Deal or No Deal. You'd have 50 cents, $1, $10 and $100k on the board and you'd turn down an $80k bank offer still

Jack Silvagni has been in the joint for 5 minutes and already pitching to new recruits w/ Windy and Hilly

Anyone else feeling uneasy this morning about the media driven Geelong narrative of Marshall being a salary dump?

If we did need a salary dump there's about 8 players Essendon or West Coast would take.

Dougal, Caminiti, Clarke, Steele/Macrae, Jones, Butler, Henry etc

But let's be real it's only a possibility of occurring once Aleer is signed, otherwise he's the release valve.
