2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

So Aleer in and Roma out are the only two, essentially, confirmed deals we will be involved in.

McKenzie sounds dead unless Merett happens (which honestly seems less likely with every passing hour)
Steele also seems less likely at this stage

Would have to be something pretty out of the ordinary IMO. Something to get back into mid first round for Mini Pou i wouldnt mind.
Liam Ryan as well. Theres also potentially Steele but I kind of feel like Steele doesnt actually have any interest in leaving.

So, assuming Geelong do relent in the last hour of trade week and give us next year's 1st round for Marshall (which I do think they will do), and, assuming that Steele doesn't find any suitors and we retain him,

That leaves us with picks 49 and 64 to get Ryan and Aleer. How do we get them done?

49 for Ryan?
64 for Aleer?

No Ryan ?.
Forgot about him

I noted Steele seems less likely to go now, although that might change in the week, he seems primed for a last minute desperation play from someone to claim the got a deal done. Smacks of a North shot with 5 minutes to go.

Aleer is supposedly a futures deal.

Ryan could be a pick swap on 3rd and 4ths TBH. If we keep the points for Fincher (who it seems we want) i think wed be more than happy to not draft this year at all.

I’m not unhappy with the idea of Steele staying. If we line up next year with Steele on the bench, or the reserves, we must have a good side. Like Marshall, he’s not on big money so he’s not going to cost much $ wise. If he can have a good pre season, and with the burden of captaincy off his shoulders, he could get back to something near his best.

Is there still that rule where you need to pick up a minimum of 3 kids on draft night?

Ryan is not going to come that cheap

I'm guessing a future second maybe. Definitely not just a swap of shitty picks though.

A narrative that I really hate is that because we're using our cap space differently to attract talent, we're going all in.

Everyone's cap space is the same, and the AFL mandate that each club must spend 95% of it. The fact that we've managed ours so well that it's allowed us to attract unprecendented levels of talent, without overpaying our current list should be applauded. Yet we're being ridiculed for tying 'x' amount up in a small portion of our list.

Fingernail deep journalism at its best.

With father/son and academy bidding to change next year, it suddenly makes Geelong's future first so much more valuable.

Pretty sure the rule changes stated only 2 picks can be used to match a bid. If Walker, Cochrane or anyone else is bid on super early, then a late first would come in 2 spots for each bid.

Geelong's future first may well be closer to 10 than 25 which will be this year.

Ohhh mate, they've talked about where pick 7 ended up being, what ended up being pick 7 after bids and father sons, they've talked about players picked at 7 who ended up #7 at their clubs, they've talked about the shape of the number 7. If the number 7 is involved, these pricks have prattled on about it.

Have they touched on Iron Maiden yet ?.

Seventh son of the seventh son is one of their great tracks.

64 will be enough for Aleer. Future pick swap for Ryan.

But when your negative thoughts about Flanders show a complete lack of knowledge about the situation, you are going to cop the responses you did and they are all fair enough.

That is the pattern regarding you and your chat. Not St Kilda fans on this forum.
I base my viewpoints on data.

"Men lie, women lie, numbers don't"

Perfectly happy admitting I don't watch a huge amount of games not involving St Kilda.

The key data points on Flanders are:
  • 24 years old
  • 89 career games and 57 career coaches votes
  • One top 10 B&F finish.
I don't need to watch him play 20 games to hold the view that trading a pick 10 or 11 (even in a "weak draft") isn't a good idea in this instance.

Rumour has it that we're interested in your former player Harry Boyd as some cheap ruck depth after trading Liam Reidy.

Is he any good? He'd be playing WAFL 99% of the time, but safe to say he'd at least be an upgrade?
Slower than treacle and not very tall. We made a mistake picking him last year. Should have given the Moose more game time.

Honest toiler too good for state leagues but way too slow for AFL. Is an amazing bloke, it'd be nice to see him get another shot - but yeah, he's out of his depth at AFL level unfortunately.
