I think the smirk and sideways look he gave when he said North sums up that we just aren't taken seriously.
This is further added on to when a meeting of presidents joked about how stupid you have to be to take the CEO job at North. This was a crack at Brian Cook being considered for our CEO role.

I get we are a small club and we have been in the abyss for a long period of time, but if other clubs list bosses have this perception of us, then it means the wider AFL community just view us as a feeder club or a non competitor.

And unfortunately player managers see us as a payday for their players and for themselves who are otherwise looking at the scrap heap.

In reality none of the above should surprise me or us since the results speak for themselves. Its just shit watching us get repeatedly dunked on.
We're not respected. Simple as that.

We are in a much better position than where we were back in 2020, but footy is a results based industry and you have to do everything well from the top down to get results.

Nepotism is still rife at the club, the process we have gone through to select coaches and other critical roles lacks the professionalism you need to make good decisions. We have put on too great a value on stability and have a high tolerance for incompetence. You do not need to be a big club to do well in the AFL, you just need to have good quality people that understand the modern game and the direction it is going when it comes to recruitment, coaching, list management and development.

That being said, I don't think it would take a lot to fix/improve things, we have relied too much on fly in/fly out reviews from people like Walsh because the people who should be doing the evaluations do not know what they are doing. You should be hiring someone like Beatson as a consultant to just do the job they should be doing to evaluate list management, recruitment, etc so he can go to the board and say this and this is good, this and that is bad.

it is one thing having people not being that good at their roles, it is another when the people who are meant to be reviewing their performance are no good at that role as well. You can't fix things you do not know are broken.

This was addressed pages ago - our name is likely to be there because of where we had picks and the attraction for Sydney of introducing some PSD pressure, not because North basket case hurr hurr lol. But go ahead and get mad if you’d rather.
“Trade Eon Fever” taking hold already

you do realise what i said right? players like tucker, daniel, mitch mcgovern, zac williams and so on are all on afl lists, me saying i would prefer them then most defenders in the afl is not a ridiculous statement, maybe watch some wc games next year.
I won't. I struggle to sit through an entire North game. The AFL starts and ends with us.

I read what you wrote and wholeheartedly disagree. Their defence is toilet, a non-flushed Doulton.

If Goater, Archer, DawsonW play we'll be better than that, with significantly more upside. Our job is to get them on the park, and only THEN, can we make an informed decision one way or the other.

He oversimplified the situation as well, he just wanted us involved to prop up what Sydney would get, it had nothing to do with it helping us in any way. Dawson wanted to go home and he decided on Adelaide and Crows were notorious for being ruthless and sending people to the PSD whilst they were shit.

Dawson didn't want to come to our club, so we weren't going to benefit from getting involved.

Much better?

Much better?

In terms of personnel and list, absolutely.

I think I have been pretty vocal about the problems in my opinion, don't think I am of the kool-aid copium squad.

I just don't think it would take a lot to get us from where we are now to be a successful team.

Isnt that the point though?
We're just not a serious contender.
Fast forward 4 years and nothing has changed.
I agree we aren't taken seriously, but I think it is a good thing in this case we didn't get involved. Basically the Swans needed us to suggest we would pinch him at the pre-season draft ahead of Adelaide, to make Adelaide give the Swans a better deal in a trade.

If we got involved, Adelaide slightly increase their offer, Dawson still ends up at the Crows, we don't get involved, Swans have to take slightly less with the threat of the PSD, still ends up at the Crows. Either way, not our fight, stay out of it, don't get used as a pawn, he was never coming to us.

Not anything close to a win, but better a club is disappointed they couldn't use us as the usual leverage tool they expect to be able to!

Interesting though that the Swans saw the PSD as a genuine threat, which we have always been too nice to use, when it has been one of the only point of difference levers at our disposal finishing at or near the bottom of the ladder. I know some players (it was suggested during the CCJ negotiations) don't want to do the dirty on the club they're leaving, but we have to be more ruthless whenever there's an opportunity, it will happen to us in a heartbeat if the opportunity is the other way around.

Lolz I can’t believe there has been even just one person, let alone several who can’t understand the reason why we were brought up in conversation. To think that it’s because we’re a basket case is the longest bow anyone has ever drawn and beyond dumb.

As you said, it’s obviously because we had pick 1 in the pre season draft, so unless Sydney could get us involved, Adelaide could always threaten to Sydney that they would just walk him to the PSD and it took away a lot of Sydney’s leverage and power in the discussion. The smirk was simply a reaction to the frustration the Sydney team had at the time in their dealings with Adelaide.

If anyone is still in denial about how were perceived or more importantly, how the people running the club are perceived - this is a reality check.

Wake the ** up and if you haven't, just ** off.
Basketcase.

Are you even commenting in relation to the video you've quoted?

They wanted us to threaten to take him in PSD so they could get a better deal. Not sure how you're coming to any of those conclusions.

Basketcase.
Hang on, what?

You think that the reason we were brought up in conversation was because we’re perceived as a basket case by oppositions teams? 🤣 That is an almighty long bow that you have drawn!

It’s obviously because we had pick 1 in the pre season draft and if Sydney couldn’t get us interested or involved, then it significantly diminished Sydney’s power and leverage in their dealings with Adelaide. If Sydney kept asking for too much or more than what Adelaide were willing to pay, then the Crows could just threaten to walk him to the pre season draft, which meant that Sydney likely took less than what they initially wanted or would’ve liked.

The smirk is simply a reaction to the frustration Beatson and his team had at the time, when they were in trade discussions for Dawson, with Adelaide. It would’ve had exactly 0 to do with North Melbourne.

I think everyone needs to just take a deep breath, stop reading into everything so much and put their tinfoil hats away for a little while.

Brady getting his moneys worth this year.
Probs has the 2 weeks off lol

The club went to the trouble of creating a fake trading portal and forum for Brady to wheel and deal on figuring it's better we do absolutely nothing than risk any well intentioned but most probably lethal attempts to fix the list.

If he makes totally nonsensical comments like "we're wrapt to bring in guys like Jed Walter and Christain Petracca but are sad to see George go" on a North media clip you'll know they haven't actually told him yet.

Haven’t seen it mentioned but Cal said that we will stay with our current picks in the 2nd round and
Not looking to move up
Yep, head office told us that we aren't allowed to move these picks. We've got to take another one for the better of the competition.

The cynic in me asks if the TV deal wasnt signed to have 18 clubs and 9 games on each week - then where would be.

Outside of the season, North really does need to get creative and campaignery and to find an extra edge to make ourselves relevant.

Its not just posters on here, even Duck said that North exploiting the 10 year rule, paying Sydney $10k for access to Carey and Longmire and then getting Denis back to coach the club with his u19's all still there - its this kind of decision making that helped land all 4 of our flags.

If we just play to the system and the rules in front of us, our destiny won't change.

If we are to embrace the fabric of North and who we are as a club - we need to find ways to set ourselves apart of the other 17 teams, otherwise we just won't ever be able to compete.
The big wigs at the club should be asked what are they doing to get a leg up against their bigger more powerful foes

Can’t expect to compete by doing the same as other clubs.
Should be searching under every rock to find a gem.
