2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

Yes, and many of those players came in stacked drafts... You are also forgettin that Flanders has delivered at the elite level, he has proved to be as good as (at his peak) many of those above and better than Caddy and Young.

Again, Flanders is a known quantity. Pick 7 isnt which is where the security lies.

Notwithstanding he was initially a pick 11 (which is where 7 will end up), and has had 5 years of development put into him which costs time and $.. so we get him for the same pick, in a shit draft. The logic is damn well sound
And what happens if 2024 ends up being the best season of his career- which St Kilda missed out on, because we're getting him at 24 years old at the end of 2025?

And we're also missing out on drafting an 18-year-old who might become a strong contributor well before the age of 24 (like Nas, Windy, Owens) and may play 15 years for St Kilda?

So with all due respect, pull your head out of your ass regarding this "FRP can never be traded" strategy. Its very obvious why the club did it and thats why people are having a go at you. Does that mean it'll work? No, but the logic is sound.
Get over yourself.
I agree with you on one point.

This Flanders deal makes sense in the context of St Kilda's "win-now" and "throw the kitchen sink at 2026 and 2027" strategy.

I just think, sadly, it'll end up being another sugar hit ala 2020. I'd prefer we keep using the various drafts- which have netted us Nas, Windy, Owens, Tauru, Phillipou, Hall and others. That's the best mechanism for a small club over the long-term.

What if a meteor strikes moorabbin during preseason? Might as well fold the club now so we don't have to do that later

  1. Jack Steele (207)
  2. Dan Butler (126)
  3. Dougal Howard (122)
  4. Rowan Marshall (120)
  5. Nick Coffield (119)
  6. Zak Jones (117)
  7. Callum Wilkie (113)
  8. Paddy Ryder (107)
  9. Hunter Clark (100)
  10. Sebastian Ross (92)
Just a reminder of the top 10 for B&F 5 years ago! Look how far we've come!!

Every single one of them either not with us or linked with leaving us at some point. Sorry Wilkes, but youre in that category now too.

Rumour has it that we're interested in your former player Harry Boyd as some cheap ruck depth after trading Liam Reidy.

Is he any good? He'd be playing WAFL 99% of the time, but safe to say he'd at least be an upgrade?
He only got one chance unfortunately and it was against reilly o'brien in round 1 at adelaide oval, so tough. But watching the VFL, he put in some decent performances and its a smart pickup for ruck depth. He did win the SANFL best and fairest in 2024 so not that long ago

You know what, you've convinced me. We shouldn't even have taken Flanders if Gold Coast gave him us for free with a first round pick ala Jack Bowes.

Why? Because Flanders would take a list spot, if he wasn't there, we could draft a James Hird type with pick 79.

Also the first round pick that they gave us could have been used on a JUH type that could have destroyed the culture of the club.

That deal would have been a disaster.

How does Gubby even have a job? Why don't we just draft a Nas level player with every pick and ignore other clubs players all together?

Don't think I have seen a slower AFL footballer. Looks like he is running in quicksand.

Free would be too much.

The dinner was Thursday night so he technically hadn't even joined yet lol
JSOS went and got fitted for his suit to the Carlton BnF on the way to pitching to Flanders

I base my viewpoints on data.

"Men lie, women lie, numbers don't"

Perfectly happy admitting I don't watch a huge amount of games not involving St Kilda.

The key data points on Flanders are:
  • 24 years old
  • 89 career games and 57 career coaches votes
  • One top 10 B&F finish.
I don't need to watch him play 20 games to hold the view that trading a pick 10 or 11 (even in a "weak draft") isn't a good idea in this instance.
Context matters. It's like saying Neale was average in the grand final because he only had 17 disposals because "those are the numbers and the numbers don't lie." But you'd be leaving out that he only played 1 half and almost single-handedly changed the game.

Flanders had a limited preseason and played the whole year in a forward role behind anderson, rowell, miller and humphrey. He was incredible last year in a midfield role. Finished 2nd in the entire comp for disposals and broke the record for the most ever disposals in a season by a Sun

Oh dear. Back to awards to rate players.

I think you do need to have watched him play to have any credible opinion on his ability and value to the St Kilda footy club.

Forgot about him

I noted Steele seems less likely to go now, although that might change in the week, he seems primed for a last minute desperation play from someone to claim the got a deal done. Smacks of a North shot with 5 minutes to go.
North waiting for the clock to tick over to grab a discount danish.

What’s happened to them this year, usually they pitch to everyone. It’s usually, we want Curnow, petracca, Flanders, Marshall, Humphrey and what else have you got.

So, assuming Geelong do relent in the last hour of trade week and give us next year's 1st round for Marshall (which I do think they will do), and, assuming that Steele doesn't find any suitors and we retain him,

That leaves us with picks 49 and 64 to get Ryan and Aleer. How do we get them done?

49 for Ryan?
64 for Aleer?
What about Fincher?

If he was so dominant in 2024 why was he not played in the centre square much in 2025?

He had 53 attendances- less than Read (76) Humphrey (242) Davies (149)

Was this merely a case of Flanders being deemed a terrible fit alongside Rowell and Anderson?

maybe the board has banned them from trading after they traded pick 3 for 26 + 27. having already traded their original pick 25 for Caleb Daniel

Flanders was a North supporter growing up too

Look, i think we're all going in circles here. You don't rate this move and aren't gonna change your mind. Fair enough, thats your purview. All we can do now is wait for the season to start.
