2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

I bet josh Jenkins is melting on trade radio rn

Yes he did, but as a last resort.

Maybe we will walk him to the PSD. If we’re still keen.

Or maybe we are using this as an excuse to get out of any deal. After all Aleer has nominated us.
I like the approach. Straight up and down, here is our offer, take it or leave it but we won't enter in to any gamesmanship.

I could especially understand the stance if somewhere along the line a pre-agreed trade has changed (that is GWS have upped the asking price).

Would we remain committed to the player if they want to walk to us in the PSD?

Sounds to me like posturing and then GWS have leaked a discussion to the media.

Hypothesising obviously but we are trying to get him on less than what GWS will accept and have walked away at the asking price.

I don’t actually want Aleer but I think it still gets done. Just posturing.

Media suggesting St Kilda walked away from Aleer partially because we need that future 2nd for Liam Ryan.

Although the backline is stacked with Silvagni and possibly Howard to add to the 2025 team, I would've thought Aleer would be a higher long-term priority than Ryan given he's 24 and Ryan's 29.

If this is true, again demonstrates St Kilda's throwing everything at winning right now.

But it doesn't really make sense, because we would've already known this was the likely asking price for both players?

Just a suggestion,

I think Geelong would want more but we don't really have much more draft capital unless we cook ourselves for next year's draft. I think Geelong would want us to facilitate a three way deal with Carlton.

Geelong get: Rowan Marshall & Charlie Curnow
St Kilda get: Sam De Koning
Carlton get: Pick 18, Geelong F1st, St Kilda F2nd
Geelong get Ro & Curnow
We get SDK wtf

A lot of water to go under the bridge and there could be a lot of moving pieces that we're not aware of.

But right now, on face value, this isn't a good look for us.

We've cared about 'looks' far too much and for far too long.

You know what looks good?

Winning games and finals and flags.

Wait we also have WC's 2027 F3, first time a 2027 pick has been traded.
Good pick to be honest. The change of F/S & Academy bidding means clubs need to user higher picks to match and what could be pick 41-45 may come in significantly. Again, a fair trade all round.

That should be one of the earliest R3 picks in 27 (hard to see them getting out of bottom 4 in next 2 years), whereas our 2026 is probably expected to be middle of the pack.

So in expected value we've moved back 10 or 12 spots and 1 year. Pretty reasonable.

Keeler is not a ruck - he's a 5 minute a qtr fill in at best - not someone you can rely on to give you 4 or 5 solid games in a row if your first ruck gets injured.

No way we win games if we have to rely he or Dodson to play as a first ruck for 4 or 5 games in a row.

If Marshall and Heath both go we will be looking for another short term back up ruckman for insurance purposes - and that's good list management not "list clogging".
