Absolute amateur hour down at the saints.

Walking away from a deal with 5 days to go in trade period. Aleer is without a contract so it’s not as if it were an impossible negotiation.

Future 2nd seemed like a reasonable enough starting point for a 700k a year player.

We shouldn’t target him though. He’s not the answer.

Aleer isn't the answer but the question is still being asked.
We need a developed KPD, it's that simple.

JUH's 900k coming off the books, there must be someone out there that's willing to nominate for good money.
All I can offer is
Zaine Cordy

If the option is Aleer or going into next year without any key defender that we are certain is going into our Best 22 then I'd go with Aleer all day.

I’m not sure Aleer is the answer but we should do our due diligence considering the position we are in. Think similar thoughts were being shared about the other Aliir when he was leaving Sydney and then he made a considerable leap in a fresh environment. Aliir is probably the exception to the rule though

I’m not convinced he’ll make it but if we’re going to take a throw at the stumps, we could probably do and have done worse

According to Wheelo, in 2025 Aleer had worse avg:
  • Contested marks than Lobb and Gardner
  • Intercept marks than Lobb and JOD
  • Defensive 1v1 loss % than Buss, Lobb, JOD and Jones
  • Tackles than Gardner, Lobb and Jones
  • Pressure acts than Gardner and Lobb
  • Spoils than Lobb, Gardner and Jones
  • 1 %ers than Lobb, Jones, JOD and Gardner
I just don't see him as a developed KPD.

He looked good in the flashes he player previously but this year when playing more frequently was exposed

With a very good supporting crew around him, it should be said. He sure as hell wouldn't be as supported here as he was by Buckley, Taylor, Idun, Ash...

Depending on salary and trade price, and assuming there's nothing untoward that the Saints have uncovered, I agree.

If not one other option pops up, we cannot have Gardiner essentially as our only ready to go depth.

If we roll the dice not getting another key defender this off-season, we know luck will dictate next year as the season when two of Lobb/JOD/Buss will be injured at the same time.

Aleer had a very poor game against us (which I think a lot of people are judging him on), but I don't think he's the terrible option some are making him out to be. I mean, it's a worry when your highlights packages actually includes some poor moments/decisions lol, but he's got plenty to work with.

Plus, he's only one year additional in the AFL system to Busslinger, similar draft position. A bit older but in many respects just as raw. All of the same arguments people are proposing for Buss re improvement essentially equally apply to Aleer.
