[Morris] The AFL is considering handing an extra rookie list spot - funded by the league - to each club, reserved for an Indigenous footballer. If introduced, it would be part of their plan to increase First Nations representation at the top level.

Positive discrimination?? We can't do that, its against the law. Lets call it positive action as a lawful alternative.

Just maybe, the increasing professionalism of the AFL industry requirements is why indigenous numbers are falling. Not clubs are failing them like some in the media like to say.

Until the AFL addresses that, things wont change. Matt Rendall tired to sound the warning bells, but a shitty HSD suffering AFL employee, who proved to be a dirty thug on the field, panicked and said he was a racist and Rendell was railroaded out of a job.

Indigenous players coming from low socio-economic backgrounds, and especially those living on traditional lands and a non urban life, maybe they can't handle, or don't want to handle the demands required to be an elite footballer, ie demands similar to an elite athlete.

That's basically why Willie gave it away. Its why 27 year old Stuie Dew gave it away. He only got a second chance because Clarko knew him from coaching Centrals and then Choco's assistant at Port. And 2 seasons and 25 or so more games was enough and he quit just after his 30th birthday.

Plenty of white blokes are good footballers, but they don't want to do the elite footballer / elite athlete stuff and they get cut, but they have a better family/personal grounding than the majority of indigenous players.

What is so earth shattering about a club pulling out of a deal? Both players and clubs can pull out of a deal at anytime that is the nature of the meat market that is AFL Trade Week. Aleer is not joining the dole queue as he still has a three year contract offer on the table from GWS and 194cm defenders are not that plentiful. The fact that GWS offered Leek Aleer a three year contract and asked for a second round draft pick from St Kilda must mean that they rate him.

Josh Jenkins? AFL trade Radio must be hard up for 'experts'.

Yeah I'm not really getting the pearl clutching on this one. This surely must happen all the time.

Deals would get cancelled for whatever reason all the time. Not sure they get cancelled when youve chased the guy for 2 years, committed to it, then backflip last minute all that often

Imagine you'd been headhunted by another employer in your field, they offered you a job, asked you to publicly declare that you wanted to leave your current employer to work for them, and then rescinded their offer. That's what happened to Aleer.

Great post.

And checked the numbers and you're spot on. Indigenous representation in the AFL IS decreasing from a record of 87 players in 2020 to 62 this year. Which surprised me.

You know what can fix that? Let's take away the incentive for clubs to encourage Aboriginal players to get to AFL level by making it much harder for the clubs to benefit from their input through the NGA.

Indigenous representation has been decreasing and so has the overall talent level of players. Meanwhile the AFL need to find 45 ok footballers within 3 years for a Tasmanian side. I’d vote to cut Norf first but increasing list sizes isn’t a terrible idea.

This sounds like it’s just an extension of the category B rookie list but for actual footballers. Dressed up in a way the AFLPA can’t complain about.

It will be the same as the old NSW scholarship system and you can't say that didn't get extra NSW players, who otherwise wouldn't have been there, onto lists. Some like Tex would have made it anyway but Port picked up a few blokes who would have been nowhere near it otherwise.

Rendell's answer to the problem was for blackfellas to be less black. Either by birth, or by removing elite talent from their families toward then end of their education. Loaded AF.

Put the dumb $s the AFL plans to put into the extra rookie spot shit into paying a successful indigenous ex-player to support the new recruits to each club as they come through. Give them someone to stay with / learn from who really gets what they need.

Lol yes. That was wild when you think about it.

Broken Hill ≠ Metropolitan RL/RU heartland.

Walker wasn’t about to be lost to the Waratahs.

The NGA program at least gave clubs incentive to work with younger Aboriginal players and get the support to them leading up to entering the AFL system.

Of course it's not immune to cherry-picking who gets support, but the rookie spot proposal does smack of giving attention to those players who have already made themselves known. Someone like a Frank Szekely who has already played a few years at North Adelaide would be the type to benefit.

But the AFL will get numbers up this way and hit their key metric, so back-slaps all round.

Brisbane must be banking on getting Oscar Allen fit. He's played 23 games in the past 2 years for 32 goals. He will see a lot more of the ball in the Lions' forward line but he has to get on the park first.

Jeez future third for Mihocek is a good deal for Melbs

I wonder what the FA compo would've been if it hadn't been done as a trade - maybe similar, but this year instead of future.

EDIT:

Actually it wasn't quite as simple as Twomey's post suggested:

Few. Thanks for explaining that.
