2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

Late first v next years second rounder, who cares.

The only reasons to entertain a trade are, it’s too good to refuse or we need the pick and space to bring in another player.

A late first isn’t getting me excited and who are linked to at present ?.

Marshall stays unless something changes, we will look like clowns making big statements about contracted players only to then fold for a lousy deal. I think folding would also undo some points we’ve run up by holding Nas and getting deals done.
We may not be linked to anyone else this year but I'm sure as hell we will be linked to more next year.

As I said, TDK has never been able to perform near his best with two rucks. That's just a fact. I'm not sure why you think it would be any different at our club.

I agree he stays unless something changes. That's what I have said all along. Geelong need to up there offer, which I'm expecting to happen.

Just on Aleer, do we think we ever intended to do the deal or were we always just going to pull out?

One of the things he seemed to have going for him was his untapped potential, but he came into the GWS team and really didn't set the world on fire. Dod we get spooked?

The club will obviously make a statement about it in due course but I'd love to know what happened.
I'd be very surprised if we weren't just waiting for an excuse to pull out of the deal.

It's seemed very odd we were still keen on him going into the trade period. If we were really that keen to get him we'd have at least waited until trade deadline to see if Giants flinch.

Max is a 25 year old 200 plus cm key forward. He shouldn't need to be baby sat anymore. He's got Sharman, Owens and even Caminiti if needed.

Brisbane just won a flag with a 20 year old as their main key forward.

And agree, his value will only go down very fast after this year. Need to make hay while the sun shines.
Christ you are game having a crack at the Golden Boy , its a wonder half the forum aren't trying to burn your house down

Sub 3 second 20m sprint vs Scott Pendlebury's 3.01, Marcus Bontempelli's 3.2 and Patrick Cripps' 3.23.

Preseason last year, he was usually only a step behind Wilson in the repeat sprints. He's not slow, he just needed to work on his timing and when to hit the contest etc, but his pace for his size is above average.

Of all players we have not named Nasiah, I'm still absolutely bullish about Pou.
Mattaes was looking sensational preseason last year but injury hit & the rest is history...he needs to cut back a bit on his work loads

RTB watched him live in the final v Hawthorn ... maybe didn't like what he saw!
I heard today Leek lost 50% of his one on ones this year..worst in the comp!

Mattaes does a lot of things with the utmost professionalism. One area he really struggles in is putting his hand up when sore. He pushes through.

He has lost an entire season due to that with the stress fracture and calf’s.

We offered a F2 & F3 for Leek & a F2.

So yes, we were very prepared to make him a Saint.

Crowded forward line with two star key big men and sub par smalls doesn’t help.

Injured most of the year playing under duress, you’d also have to think it will be Marshall playing 60/40 forward.

Mate, between Curnow and McKay they've missed that many games it's not funny.

He has had plenty of opportunities to have an impact forward. You only have to have watched him attempt to play as a key forward and you know that he's not suited to that role. It's not gonna change at St Kilda.

40% of the game in the forward 50 is too much for TDK. The only way it works is if Marshall plays as a genuine forward that chops out in the ruck. If we are doing that we may as well play Caminiti and make hay while the sun shines with Marshall.

Fingers crossed Geelong come to the party.

They will have to answer. The story is coming one way or the other by Wednesday when they are forced to speak with the media per afl rules
They maybe forced to speak , it doesn't mean they will tell us the truth , "Oh we thought he was crap in the last few games so we told him to f off"
Yeah right

Yeah I rate this. Seems very capable and somewhat excess to need for the hawks. Could definitely get him for under what he’s worth
He's really not excess for Us. We can't expect Gunston to have another 70 goal year, Calsher has all the potential in the world and Chol.is a ideal 3rd option. A fit Mitch Lewis, hopefully he can get a clear run at things, is far and away our best key forward

It's just very interesting that it was all done so fast. That offer is about on the money and that F2nd from GWS would have sufficed for Ryan, yet we gave ours for him and took a 2027 3rd rounder which will be basically a 4th round pick so worthless.
Even with Neddy we probably could have squeezed something back if they'd strung it out a bit. If it ends now then we've overpaid for the sake of haste which is opposite to established SOS form. Just seems a bit odd...

The best thing the club could do for Mattaes would be to hook him up with Nick Riewoldt as a mentor.

Its rare to have such overcommitted, almost OCD levels of intensity in anyone and those two are both the same. Rooey made it work and would be a great sounding board for Pou.

Its one thing to simply tell him to slow down and cut back, its another to hear it from someone who has lived it throughout 336 games.

Yeah right
They don’t need to say that.

Off the top of my head.

They need to explain why they walked with 6 days left.

Why it fell apart over a second round pick and if we didn’t want him why did we release a statement welcoming his nomination to come.

This becomes a lot easier to explain if there are more moves to come.

Which is why I’ve been neutral on the topic. I’ll wait and see what we do.

I'm expecting Ro to get to Geelong but they need to up the ante given he's contracted

A late first seems about right to me. He's a very good role player but far from a star.
Seems right on the open market, but is a contracted player so I don’t see why the swans would depart with him for a late first.

He’s clearly rated internally (going off bnf performances), and reportedly wants to stay, so doesn’t add up to me.

Grew up in Melbourne, his uncle is BT, other than that can’t see a reason for moving.

I suspect (and that’s all we’ve got here) we went from red hot and horned up for him to lukewarmly interested after we snagged little SOS.

When GWS asked for more than we wanted to give we were happy to bail on it quicksmart.

We likely would have done it if Gws wanted him gone but when it became clear they were gonna go hard we walked.

The further away we get from it the more clear that looks to me. It’s a saints first decision so I’m good with it
