I think the rookie list upgrades happen at the draft, but aren't announced - so they happen right before the draft starts and the list spots adjust accordingly.

But there is a facility to upgrade rookies between the national and rookie drafts.

If Whan doesn't get a bid then he will become a category B rookie - assuming he makes it through the PSD, which has no facility to match if someone else wants to take him there. I don't believe the category B rookies are safe there until the rookie draft is about to start, I hope it's right at the end of the national draft, but since primary list spots are being filled in the pre-season draft I don't think it is.

But do you want to take another pick at the end of the national draft, the last player taken, just to have Whan on the category B list when we can take him with that pick ourselves and add two other NGA players to the category B list?
I thought I read the AFL had closed that PSD loophole for NGA’s and they can be added as Cat B as soon as the draft has concluded

With Wil Brodie gone, who's going to be the next "never picked" mystery man?

Banners is multi positional, maybe he could go from Whipping Boy to this role very easily. Other candidates could be Dudley or Sharp. Have put together good single seasons already.
Sturt. He could reinjure a knee, get delisted and people would still be saying that he would be a better inclusion than Amiss after Amiss is quiet for one game

The 103 pick doesn't phase me at all. I assume the price for the Power is that they pick up 100% of his salary, and potentially it could have been back ended so better for the club.

If Walker can't get back into the team, I'll be leading the brigade anytime a small forward kicks 3+ goals

What a terrifying trade period the Power have produced. Wehr, Durdin, Brodie. An all time scary lineup of recruits.

This trade period has been a funny one. A lot of very big names and a lot of extremely small names. The mid-tier players like Flanders and McVee who are normally the main movers in trade period are very much in the minority

This is in their draft booklet for 2025:

Academy and NGA Pre-Selected
A club may include one or more eligible Academy and NGA players on its Rookie List during the period between the AFL Pre-Season Draft Selection Meeting and the start of the AFL Rookie Draft Selection Meeting, provided that the requirements are fulfilled.

No, it'll just be "Why did we give away Will Brodie for pick 103?" now instead of "Play Will Brodie"

With regards to the 3way trade and ending up with pick 20 there is a very real chance this pick comes in 3 places with Brisbane and Gold Coast needing to match bids.

The extra cost of matching will make it harder for clubs to trade them away. Wallsy may have been playing 3d chess while we are all chucking the checker board.

Quality journalism;
Sydney need to Charlie Curnow badly to be able to rise back up the ladder in 2026.

Don't think the first two Gold Coast bids and Annable impact pick 20 much at all tbh. They'll trade back back probably still hold some presence in the teens.

It'll be bids in the teens and potentially 20s that push back Pick 20.

Pick 47 is more than likely significantly come in. Reckon it's a pick inside 40, maybe even inside pick 35.

Reckon we'll see around 25-28 picks in the first round and around ten picks in the second round.

Yeah but the push back really doesn't change anything that we don't already know. Not to restart the seasonly debate of how do you count academy players, but once everyone knows they're out of the pool that's done. Whereas if teams retain late firsts to match bids (which never happened in the old system), that'd change who we have access to. If teams actually do that, it'd move the needle somewhat regarding the validity of the vitriolic reaction to the pickswap (mine included).

Still think it looks silly, and the fact that Gold Coast and Melbourne may do a Trac trade that's ostensibly using our McVee pick as a points makeweight makes me only more sure that we didn't need to pull the trigger as early as we did. Could've easily been a 3-way trade where we accumulate then give Gold Coast points to get McVee. But if we go from "20th best player in the open pool" to eg "17th best player in the open pool", that's not insignificant.

Remember he was originally pick 9 in the 2016 draft? Now that's a fall from grace 😅
I feel like he started his career at a bad time. Back then big inside mids were the flavour and they didn't need a second skillset outside of clearance. The game moved on very quickly after he was drafted. Kind of like starting work in a music store just before spotify happened.

Which is the biggest deal of Monday. Is it Tylar Young going to West Coast or Will Brodie to Port Adelaide. Big call for trade radio.

Do they they drag in Pickers at the end of every day to reminisce about past trades?

A Trade Radio post from 4 hours ago begins... "Today is the huge tipping point, it is definitely go time...."

The push back doesn't do anything but I think the poster I was replying to was hoping Gold Coast would use 2-3 picks inside Pick 20 to match an early bids. Pick 20 temporarily becomes Pick 19.

But in all likelihood Gold Coast trade enough picks back that it doesn't work that way.

Brisbane will keep their teen pick (17).
Gold Coast should still keep one (probs 18). They will definitely trade back another (ie 15) for multiple second round picks. They are sending off Melbourne 7,8 for Petracca and 24 (with likely swap of other picks).

Carlton will want to push back pick 10 as that is prime range for F/S Dean.

So I reckon the difference between 13 and 20 will reduce by 2 (15 and 20). Then both will be pushed back by a couple of other pick upgrades for academy and F/S. Gold Coast have another two that will definitely go top 20 as well as Dean. I forget the others but might another 1-2.

So likely pick 24/25 (Freo pick) verse pick 19-20 (old Freo pick).

Ps I haven’t run the numbers before I get

All of a sudden the trade looks better
