Recommitted Zach Merrett [UFA 2027] - Wanted a trade to Hawthorn, but it didn't get done

If someone knocked on your door out of the blue and asked to buy your house but are only offering ~ 70% of what its worth.

After you tell them no they just hang around at the front door. They don't up the offer. They don't keep knocking. They just stand there.

What do you do?

You've made 3 baseless assumptions in this shit scenario

Except the real analogy is we can't make offers or negotiate the price because Essendon are refusing to answer the door at all.

Also, 2 firsts is not 70% of Merrett's worth. It's about 115% (as it should be given he is contracted)

- Essendon has shut the door multiple times, and now welded it shut, and thrown away the key.

- They won’t even answer the phone, let alone entertain a trade.

- Petroro floated scenarios not official offers from Hawthorn (you're playing those weird semantics games again)... he was told "we're not interested" just like Welsh and Rosa have said in the media.

Your scenarios were instantly rejected. Trade week was over before it began and offers like pick 8 + F1 wouldn’t even get a return call.

Theres no semantics being played. No idea what you are on about in this regard.

Essendon said we arent trading Zach, the balls is in Hawthorn's court to offer them something they cant refuse.

The later has not been done to date.

I have no idea if Pick 8 + F1 has formally been offered. Even still its not going to get done at that price IMO, but it might be a kicking off point.

Its not up to Essendon to chase Hawthorn to get this deal moving, its up to Hawthorn to get this done.

You cant shut a door that isn't open. Hawthorn need to open the door in the first place. Than Essendon may indeed shut it if the offer is shit.

Essendon would accept a package around two top 10s just like gold coast is willing to part with petracca who is on a much worse contract.

Isn’t this narcissism 101

Pretend like it’s the other persons fault when the real issue is the door hasn’t been knocked

Evidently not.

The proposed Petracca package is two top 10's with pick 24 coming back.

Hawthorn have a top 10 and pick expected to be just outside the top 10 which is basically the same value (as the above trade).

Essendon are reportedly not even having a discussion with the same valuation as the Petracca deal.

If this is the case this is on Merrett. He knew that Scott didn't want to trade him, he even came out on AFL360 the day Merrett met Mitchell, and Scott said "all gloves are off."

I think he thought he could have one foot in both camps, but he should've been more fully committed from the start.

Like I've been saying for a week... Merrett... still... hasn't... officially nominated.

If someone knocked on your door to buy your house out of the blue, you’d want more than it’s worth to consider selling it.

Its Essendons asset, Hawks made the move so need to make them an offer they can’t refuse. Its not really up to the seller to just accept a “good offer”, they can demand anything they like.

We don't have anything else to give you.. Like I said the only offer Essendon want is two first rounds, Will Day and Zach Merrett to come back in 2027.

You cant shut a door that isn't open.

You said it. The door isn't even open.

Cheers 🥂

Neither of those picks will be top 10 post academy.

Especially the 26 F1 which could end up in the 20's.

Yet there’s been no Hawthorn offer apparently?

Your club under Sam Mitchell has very clear tactics. Undermine the relationship between the club and player first so that it becomes untenable enough to force a trade.

There’s a reason only meetings between Mitchell and other players seem to get leaked to the media, despite it likely happening with all clubs.

Do you have the emotional empathy of a 5 year old?

Clubs talk to opponents' players and their managers all of the time. All that Sam and the recruiting team would be doing is explaining the Hawks' vision and where that player would fit into the team and that vision. The same thing that all coaches/recruiters in the competition would be doing with multiple players every year.

In the two cases that we know about (Merrett and Allen) the current clubs' future prospects are awful. It is possible that the relationship between those players and their club/coach/team was also already poor.

How exactly is Sam 'undermining' the relationship?
It is up to that player to make the comparison and determine what they want in their footballing future.

Is Chris Scott undermining the relationship between Marshall and the Saints?
Is Dean Cox undermining the relationship between Curnow and the Blues?

This is hands down the most poorly run process of any potential trade. At least the Saints put their hand up and said they couldn't get Aleer done.

This is two clubs who simply have no idea how to operate.

Welsh, Rosa and everyone says "We will not trade under any circumstance". They all confirm "we are not listening to offers". "we are not taking calls". Media report it is left to Petoro to try and table offers instead. Offers are not even heard, the response is "Essendon are resolute they will not trade".

Then Essendon fans say they are listening to offers but the offers aren't good enough (in direct contradiction to everything we have heard) and then say I'm being a narcissist for reiterating what your club is saying when it is you trying to pass blame to Hawthorn. That's quite a hypocritical take.

I can’t believe I was fooled by all those ‘ITK’ Hawks posters who appear to have just been larping, a few weeks ago. We all know who they are. Very sad times.

The hawks were meant to have Petracca and Merrett by now.

You don't think Hawthorn know how to operate?

Coming from Freo? Spare me.

We've done nothing wrong. But will be presenting options tomorrow night when the whips are cracking.

This is just false.

Hawks do have more to give. they just don't want to give it.

Chasing a contracted players from a club, than telling us X player is unavailable is just laughable.

It sounds to me like Hawthorn thought they were going to get this done cheap and didn't plan well for it at all and have probably left Zach out on a branch.

This was always going to take Hawthorn coming up with a massive package to get ZM out of the club, everyone knew it, you guys just didn't want to believe it.

That status quo remains that Essendon don't want to lose ZM, its up to Hawthorn to change their minds with an amazing offer, that they have clearly not come up with yet.

The door was never open, its up to hawthorn to get it open. They have so far failed.

It is historical hatred mate. We are the Israel and Palestine of the league

If Zach had of nominated GWS, they would be discussing Terms.

It was in relation to your analogy, take a breath turbo
