And in a properly open draft they would indeed have access to the 9th best player but they don't in this case, it'd be the 13-14th best player.

if that offer isn't appealing to Essendon, they its likely not going to progress, and they set themsleves up for 12 months of turmoil.

Merrett's the one who set himself up for turmoil but I'm sure the club will 'wrap their arms around him' and they'll move on and do the same dance next year.

Open draft or not, there's an order to who's the best. Clubs will rank all players, whether they're academy/FS-tied or not, otherwise there'd never be bids.

The future first needs to be someone elses for starters, they aren't gambling on Hawks falling off a cliff WITH Merrett that would be the definition of dumb. They will only improve, so that pick is 16 at best likely closer to 20 as there are always academy and father son things.

Hustwaithe is rubbish, if he was good he'd have played both finals. We keep hearing it's only because he can't crack the midfield...well Day was out.

What does keeping Merrett do for Essendon? In the short term it lifts their ceiling to about 11th and their floor to about 14th. Losing him would change that to about 12th and 16th. Likely to leave in a couple of years for nothing when out of contract. Take the picks and back in your new football department team. You don't have Dodo any more.

Yes, we will also gain additional draft picks for those losses. But these are independent events from the Merrett trade where we keep Pick 9, F1, F2 (and Hustwaite) instead to replace those losses.

It is not going to be done unless the future first is SIGNIFICANTLY better and it has to be from a club likely to miss the 8, that's up to the Hawks to find that club not Essendon. If you don't want to trade players okay fine, fine a future from a club in the bottom 8 that you can get for next year, then Essendon MIGHT talk...

Until that time why would Essendon bother. All this talk of there was a reason Hustwaithe wasn't playing yet he didn't play every game Day was out. So which one is it? Is he actually good OR is he as many think a slow VFL plodder who is at best depth? It doesn't look such a good deal if the player you give is basically depth.

Well he's considered a far better player than Ned Long who did quite well at Collingwood when he had a chance at a fresh start.

I have said over and over we won't get pick 22 back that was an ambit claim probaly ends being their 38 or pick 50 back. Hayward is a mile better than Hustwaithe so no your offer isn't better than ours than you. One actually plays every week. Our f1 is likely to be earlier don't buy this we are contending next year thing, may make top 6 at most.

Well, no that's not an apt analogy at all, because Essendon have a Lambo(Merrett) and hawthorn are trying to offer up a 180b Datsun(Hustwaite) with a custom spoiler(f1st) and Alpine stereo with subwoofer(pick 9).

The Lambo can't leave without the keys and a driver.
