So why is Merrett worth so much more?
Have you watched both players actually play?So why is Merrett worth so much more?
No current season stats available
Well he's considered a far better player than Ned Long who did quite well at Collingwood when he had a chance at a fresh start.

And yet here you are trying to draw parallels.Jordan Lewis was traded at 30 years old (Merrett is 30). He just finished runner up in the B&F in a top 4 team (missing out to Sam Mitchell). (Merrett just won the B&F at a bottom 4 team)
The previous year, Lewis made the AA squad and was instrumental in winning the flag, including top 3 in Norm Smith (Last year, Merrett made the AA squad).
The year before, Lewis was All Australian and won the B&F at the Premiership team (the year before, Merrett was AA and won the B&F in an average team).
I know it's not exactly the same circumstances - but contracted, same age and similar recent performances - does anyone want to guess what Lewis was traded for?
A 3rd and 4th round pick upgrade.
Tell us again how 2 firsts (including a top 10), a 2nd and a fringe player is a "shitty" offer.
(I have 10 more examples up my sleeve if you want - wouldn't mind seeing anyone with anything close to the offer made for Merrett for a 30+ year old midfielder. Ever.)
If that's the case Essendon would be at the table suggesting that as the counter. I feel you have been very rational on what you think is fair considering the circumstances but you might need to get your head around the fact that Walsh and Brad have too much skin in the game, Brad doesn't want to weaken the list even temporarily as he won't see out a rebuild like that. Walsh has put himself out there and can't/won't walk it back it's the stance that must have got him the job.Think if McKenzie was added the wider deal with Picks would change.
No he musn't have. Either was Ned Long. Then he must have been playing both finals and every game Will Day was unavailable right? Or is he as many put a list clogger who basically is a very very good VFL player and there are many of these
No he musn't have. Either was Ned Long.
Haha. Hustwaite would be a cheap car to get them around while they go use all the picks ($$$) to go find some more quality cars.Well, no that's not an apt analogy at all, because Essendon have a Lambo(Merrett) and hawthorn are trying to offer up a 180b Datsun(Hustwaite) with a custom spoiler(f1st) and Alpine stereo with subwoofer(pick 9).
The Lambo can't leave without the keys and a driver.
Or they could just keep the Lambo, because they don't really need to sell it to begin with, and use the picks they currently have?Haha. Hustwaite would be a cheap car to get them around while they go use all the picks ($$$) to go find some more quality cars.
He's been taken off the table by Hawthorn. Suggets they're aware of Essendon's interestIf that's the case Essendon would be at the table suggesting that as the counter. Well, 1 player was getting pushed out and the other isn't.Jordan Lewis was traded at 30 years old (Merrett is 30). He just finished runner up in the B&F in a top 4 team (missing out to Sam Mitchell). (Merrett just won the B&F at a bottom 4 team)

Zach is contracted, that's the main difference.
Hawthorn has or has maybe the third party? He's been taken off the table by Hawthorn. Suggets they're aware of Essendon's interest
Hawthorn said he's not on the tableHawthorn has or has maybe the third party?
That doesn't make sense with how the club operates with the list, we allow players if they want to look for opportunities. If Mackenzie is requesting a trade to Essendon why wouldn't he be included in a trade for Merrett.Hawthorn said he's not on the table
And yet here you are trying to draw parallels.
Mackenzie has told Hawthorn that. Hence their stance. Yes?That doesn't make sense with how the club operates with the list, we allow players if they want to look for opportunities. If Mackenzie is requesting a trade to Essendon why wouldn't he be included in a trade for Merrett.
Either way ask yourself how your clubs getting the Mackenzie deal done if hawks can't get the Merrett deal done with there supposed stance of not including a player that wants to go to your club?
Exactly.Well, not exactly. It feels like (a select few) have lost all perspective on the value of 30+ year olds at the trade table (or even the value of first rounders). If you look at any trade ever to develop a precedent (even accounting for slight differences in circumstances) there is no way you look at the offer made for Merrett and conclude it's a "shitty offer"
Hell, it's more than nearly every Essendon supporter was asking for in this very thread prior to the offer being made.
He has told Hawthorn he wants to move to Essendon?Mackenzie has told Hawthorn that. Hence their stance. Yes?
It has not been a pleasure. It's been a compulsive obligation. This thread is one to tell the grandkids about.
Whatever happens. It's been a pleasure.

It’s funny watching multiple Essendon supporters who were saying 2 firsts and HH was a good deal, hell the Hawks even threw in a 2nd rounder and make no mistake HH will be a best 23 player for Essendon straight away.
A prominent player manager with no skin in this deal even said it was a good deal and Essendon were being childish.
These same people who said “That’s a fair deal” “We should take that” are now backpedaling because their incompetent club tells them so.
It’s like a cult, a shitty cult ….. but a cult non the less.
Yes, it looks like they aren't.Walk away Hawthorn not worth it.
That wouldn't be enough, change the 2nd rounder to 2027 first round.Fair enough don’t blame them.
Pick 9 + future 1st + 2nd round + McKenzie would be ridiculous overs.
You really think that Essendon will have less harmony next year if they have an ex captain setting high standards for the youth while winning our best and fairest if he's got it in his mind that he'll be looking for a trade at the end of the year? Assuming that the fitness team does turn it around and Essendon has a fit list next year there is already infinitely less doom and gloom based disharmony, that far outweighs any negative feelings about Merrett thinking about leaving. So, they're in front for disharmony.2025
Hawks
Gain:
Gia as Development Coach
Loss:
Nothing
Dons
Gain:
Disgruntled captain and team disharmony
Loss:
Potential to improve list significantly for the future
2026 (after Dons finish bottom 4 and commit to a rebuild)
Hawks
Gain:
Zerrett
Loss:
2R pick
Dons
Gain:
2R pick
Loss:
Zerrett
2 first that are similar given our first is better this year cancel out
Our secondary piece is pick 29 not Hustwaite he was a throw in like Florent was
So pick 29 for Hayward and getting a pick back is fairly even (valuing hayward at pick 20)
So both offers are very similar while Curnow is the more expensive asset given his age, position and having 4 years left.
