Recommitted Zach Merrett [UFA 2027] - Wanted a trade to Hawthorn, but it didn't get done

He was the one who chose to recommit though.

Essendon also gave him a pay bump after those comments.

Yeh I really don't know what Zac was thinking there or his management.

But my memory is hazy here. Did he re-commit when Truck was still around? I know he was very fond of him.

I don't think he's quite as enamoured with Brad.

He happily accepted more money last year.

Yes.

He's wanted out almost every year for the last four years.
His management have clearly stated if he doesn't leave this season they'll make the same move next year.

The bloke is fed up. He's downed tools. Given his all to a club that's going nowhere.
He'll still turn up every week and do his best as an individual but that's not a culture you're going to want to foster for the young draftees.
Oh, you want to make up your own reality? You do realise that the reason some players were pissed off at him was because he'd pulled them aside to talk about loyalty for the long term when they had offers from rivals in front of them, and now he's changed his mind on a dime after an exit meeting?

That is before all the bids and matching, they don't end up as that. Bottom line either trade for a better future 1 OR put Lewis/MacKensie up.

If you don't want to do either it's not going through that simple. Essendon won't accept scraps especially scraps in a poor draft.

You have way too much faith in our side to be near top 6 next year too
If this situation is as simple as you (and others) have said it would have been sorted a long time ago.

Anything is simple if you ignore enough of the detail.

Well, no that's not an apt analogy at all, because Essendon have a Lambo(Merrett) and hawthorn are trying to offer up a 180b Datsun(Hustwaite) with a custom spoiler(f1st) and Alpine stereo with subwoofer(pick 9).

The Lambo can't leave without the keys and a driver.

Can't believe I'm entering into these stupid analogies but my work sucks today and here we are....

The real analogy is:

Merrett is a "lamborghini' but has done 250,000 k's. We hope to get 50,000K's more out of it before it breaks down.

It is being traded in for:

A newish Datsun with 10,000 k's
2 picks at the luxury new car parking lot
and another pick at the "everyday" new car parking lot

Even in the analogy that is a great deal and could only turn out poorly if the person picking the cars knows absolutely noting about cars ;)

Essendon supporters have this weird delusion that Merrett was somehow mindcontrolled by the charming Sam Mitchell to want to walk out of the club.

This has been brewing for a lot longer and it has nothing to do with Hawthorn. This is an Essendon problem.

I mean I don't blame him for saying something like this when he has to deal with the same pack of spuds for 10+ years.

The guy is pissed at the club and he's been pissed for a long time. It's got all the signs of a burnt out employee needing a change in scenery.

He's not going to magically have a nap and come out all smiling. The resentment has been brewing for a while and until things change MASSIVELY at the club (hint: It's Essendon so it won't) it won't be going away.

Well that's just dumb Zachary.
This is why I full empathise and appreciate Zach's concerns and his right to explore but I also feel 0 pity for him.

Nothing's changed from his renegotiation last year. He took more money for this season knowing how ****ed we are, and that hasn't changed.

Its also why I understand Hawthorn’s offer, its nearly the best they can do but, again, they had to have known it probably wouldn't be enough for the club when they chose to engage in discussions.

I've said it won't get done but it's not Essendon's fault here. Hawthorn won't offer a package near what is value. For the millionth time Essendon are the last side that need more list cloggers and that's what Hustwaithe is. He'd be a good captain for the VFL side I guess

Hustwaite is only added as Essendon were chasing him. The real value is the picks.

Why does it have to be someone's fault if it doesn't get done? If there's a gap between what Hawthorn is willing to pay and what Essendon is willing to accept then it's just a no deal situation.

Yeah, re-signed in 2021, so Rutten was still there.

based on their club history though, I'd have made sure there were some clauses in place.

No they were chasing MacKensie for starters, and you blokes want to get rid of Hustwaithe don't blame you, he's just Charlie Consable version 2.

Hustwaite, Tsatas and Hobbs will make a very good VFL midfield!

I know many will disagree but does anyone else just find Merrett to be a reasonably unimpressive player? I mean he is certainly a good player, but I have never thought of his name when I am thinking of the top 20 players in the league at any given time. He very much feels like a 21 to 50 player in the league to me.

Ok, how's this for an analogy: You're trying to forcefully buy something another party has no intention of selling.

A 'fair' offer won't cut the mustard.

Well they were at the start of trade period when everyone was saying "AT LEAST TWO FIRSTS"

Now that we've offered more than two firsts the picks aren't worth anything.
I didnt say they aren't worth anything.

But they aren't valuable enough on their own and HH doesnt move the needle for the club.

Weirdly Tsatas would be one I'd take a half a punt on in our side. Wouldn't be asked to do anything other than get the pill to our outsides. He can't kick that's obvious but plonk him right inside and who knows.
