I'm not entirely convinced on the doomsaying of our salary cap, considering that we were apparently prepared to take on all of The Simp's gigantic salary.

I think the fairer reflection of the lack of movement this trade period was down to who was available. Who would we genuinely want?

Simpkin - not at North's asking price.
Clarry - would have been good, but chose GWS to get out of Victoria
Petracca - likewise looking to leave the state
Merrett - only has eyes for Hawthorn, and still likely won't get done
Curnow - wants out of the city, and likely won't get done.
Steele - he's lost a step and has a gigantic salary. It's a pass.
Jamarra - not in a million years with the way we value culture. This bloke is more toxic than even the rumours suggest.

Who's left? Jai Serong? Fiorini? Budarick? Florent? These are middle-of-the-pack guys, not needle movers. We've got solid citizens on our list for days, there's no need to look at these types. We're after difference makers.

Genuinely unsure who we could realistically have had a ping at here.

For the record I think we're into a few huge names next year, Humphrey foremost amongst them. Guess we'll wait and see. I'd prefer to go conservative in such a weak trade year and have the capital to make a play when someone who genuinely matters becomes available.

I am totally with you. The salary cap doomsday narrative is a crock of shit (I made a thread on it here doing some modelling).

There was nothing for us this year unless it was from the opportunistic bargain bin. Go harder next year at proper targets, Humphrey perhaps, get in Rowell’s ear for the year after, consider long term defensive stock in the next 1-2 years.

And practically if we want to amount to anything next year let’s fix the midfield in another way:
1- Train Pez in there from first day of pre season and get Pendles to mentor him in that very specific position he’s held for years
2- Get Wade to do a tailored program to improve Beau’s tank and give him most chances to make it in the middle at least as a 50/50 player (Jordy could play more forward, can suit him as he’s got the same body issues and make as Danger)
3- send Josh on a wing / middle and give Houston a chance to direct play from HB
4- find a way to get Bobby back on the
straight and narrow

Net net under this scenario I do still feel like our forward line improves and our midfield improves.
