2025 List Management Discussion - Part 5

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

I have thought long about this and my conclusion is that there is only one way for this to be ok: a flag

Anything less, with this list, is a failure.

I dont care what people say, you wanna gut guys like Steele then you go and win a flag, no more excuses

Flags aside, I think the game had gone passed Steeley and we have far too many players in the wings who would be held back if he had stayed. You basically now have Flanders as a direct replacement for Steele with guys like Box, Garcia, Hall, Trav, Pou etc to rotate through.

A tough decision for the heart, but an easy decision for the head, in my opinion.

I do understand your consternation and I think all of us are sad to see him go that way.

"Budarick, Smith and Sellwood will be the best defensive trio in the comp next year despite the fact that no one has heard of these guys yet."

Not sure if joking or serious. I fear the latter
🤣

I guess they were being serious...

"You are close with Smith but really needs to be McNeil

The only way to fix our backline is (B)uderick (D)ale (S)ellwood (M)cNeil"

I get it - but he was a captain of the club. We want players like Nas to stay and this is how we treat St Kilda royalty?

Add a year, smooth it out, ask for him to take a cut, get him a Cotton On franchise - now maybe they tried this but it seems not. You can run a good business and maintain some form of moral fibre. They have gone complete and utter ruthlessness which is fine, but they would want to deliver.

We forget, these people (RTB SOS Gubby) come and go, they are there to fill their pockets. The players go out and bleed (literally). They are talking a big talk and there is no room for excuses now.

Bring it home or **** off and don't come back.

so what youre saying is, because we didnt see Steele as a future player due to his drop off and wanted to give his spot more to players like Nas, garcia boxshall and co.....those players wouldnt be happy????

think youre talking out the rectum there tbh, they are professional sports people and only care about the ultimate prize

The Geelong tears over missing out on Marshall are delicious. Perhaps don’t be smart arses and just get the deal done at a fair price like we did with pick 7 for Flanders and everything works out
They actually think we are being more emotional about it

Well, they are correct

Boohoo you freckle heads

"No more excuses", like we're playing video games against a computer or something.
i mean you know there are 17 other clubs trying to do the same right?

The current premiers have gotten 2 great free agents, + a top 3 draft pick player.
GCS have gotten Petracca, and 2 more top 5 draft talents this year, with the guns they already have
Sydney have picked up charlie curnow, while giving up their f1's which dont matter cause they get academy talent as well

And lets not forget that he most likely would have been playing VFL or playing mids or half forward when there were injuries. You really want a bloke on 700k playing VFL or a backup? Whats more embarassing for him as a player, getting dropped or traded to a team that needs him to prolong his career?

I love Steele, hope to see him back at the club as a coach but the equivalence of cutting him only being okay if we win a flag is petulant. Would you have been okay with not winning a flag if we had kept him.

Thought I heard dodgy ankle, but not sure if that. Understood - to be unsaid. Cheers!
Yeah Aleer had a gruesome ankle injury in his U18s year. Described it as "facing the wrong way". Also broken fibula from the same incident. Seemed to recover quite well setting the record for vertical leap though

No - I am saying there is no room for excuses from this point forward. Plain and simple

No, "no more excuses" means no more excuses like "oh we are young" or whatever

Go for it, and yes they might come up short but they have gone all out assault. So go for it, but if it blows up, cop your fair whack and dont piss and moan. The club has had excuse after excuse for all eternity. We wanna be big boys, act like it

He's not part of our best 23-25 team anymore though.

Is it more insulting to be honest about that and help him find another opportunity or do we lie to his face and then stick him in the ressies for 6 months, likely ending his career?

I'm not sure why everyone suddenly decided he would be playing VFL? I hope Windhager and Boxshall go past him but they haven't yet. Macrae had a better year but he's turning 32 and his form fell steadily with each round.

Regardless I do think it is a shit look that a 2x AA captain, a real heart and soul guy, has been pushed out the door without getting a send-off game. It's doesn't feel very St Kilda.

Fascinating to see how we go with Hammer and Keeler. I think Ross said he sees Hammer resuming as a forward this year but will that really eventuate now we're keeping RoMa?

It's a tough one, Keeler maybe goes back? I wouldn't mind seeing a starting backline of something like:

Wilkie Keeler Hastie / Stocker (Small Defender)
Clark JSoS Sincs

Keeler and JSoS playing accountable roles and Wilkie roaming.

Because with flanders coming in, he would be pushed out

I speculated when the role became available Ross might see himself in that role when it's time to hand the keys to Enright so may not want to bring in the likes of Bartel. I guess him doing the role while staying on as coach would solve that issue.

I'm still 100% speculating though.
Hopefully Ross is only the temporary footy boss...can't possibly do both roles once the season proper starts

Ryan was also in at 21% of centre bounces for the Eagles in the games he played (121 total). Flanders was at 8% for the Suns (53 total); Hall was at 5% for us (34 total). It's fair to say Ryan spent a fair chunk of games more than a kick away from goal.

My impression was that his role was more like Hall's than Higgins' (or Butler's) and I'm hoping that having him frees up Hall to play more midfield.

21% of center bounces over 121 games for a total of 30 center clearances....0.2 per game. Doesn't sound like he's very good at that
