I was sitting at the dinner table with mum and dad last night and we got talking about footy, as we do. We were discussing the great small forwards of the AFL era and Dad spoke very highly of Daniel Motlop. I'm too young to remember him or see him play but Dad told me he was possibly the most talented player to ever play the game, only Gary Ablett jr and Robbie Gray came close to him. Apparently he kicked some pretty big bananas from the boundary, snapped some miraculous goals and just had some pure magic about him.
My mum scoffed a bit and said he was handy but never a superstar, but my dad argued vehemently that he is a legend of the game and pretty much brought banana kicks and snaps back in fashion after they kind of died out in the late 90's/ early 00's.
I got to look at some of his highlights on YouTube with mum and dad after dinner during my supervised computer time and I have to say he very much looked like an extremely talented player.
What's the general consensus around these parts?

Who's Robbie Gray?

He struggled to have an impact at North. Got traded to Port Adelaide.
At his peak he was an exceptional player. His peak was 2007 & 2008. He kicked 44 & 57 goals IRC, the those two years. Any small forward kicking 2 goals a game during a season is having an exceptional year. His peak was short lived though & he has a short career, consistently injured, ankle injuries causing him to miss a lot of the 09, 10, 11 seasons, and then delisted.

Your mother is right.

Motlop didn’t struggle to have an impact at north

He was a gun, that we wanted to hold onto but it always seemed he’d head to S.A at some point.

Did he get the best out of himself? No. But he could seriously play.
