So the crows can buy Ah Chee without trading ...just by offering more money than anyone else ??

Yes, that is correct 👍 List spots are tight. Salary caps are tight. Teams simply won’t take a risk on picking someone who doesn’t want to be there and has agreed to terms with another club.

and my point before whats the point of the drafts ??

just get the deal to fall over with the player you want and pay for him in the PSD based on salary cap space compared to the other clubs ???......like come on if this is legit why isn't everyone doing it ?

just seems wrong

The whole system is a sham. Just got to try and get in on it. We did well with getting pick 2 for OA and had some mild assistance with going to the begging bowl. What can you do 🤷‍♂️

Focus on the National Draft with youth (who by and large, know they could be drafted anywhere).

Clubs generally agree to a trade before letting a player go for free in the preseason draft.

Yeah this is what I am struggling to get my head around

So it's not what draft picks you get ...it's about convincing players to come to your club ??? and giving bigger contracts compared to the losing club?

like why did we sell overs the draft picks for Tim Kelly ??? just get him to go to the PSD and pay him more than Geelong can afford?

Man can't talk properly.. It's like the only prerequisite to be on radio these days it seems.

Just the mumbles and bumbles and stopping mid sentence and contradicting himself over and over again.

Going on about ahchee and Merrett and taking the stupidest stance on both issues

Hang on...

Is Dark Sharks Glen Jakovich? 😲

**** me are we really going to work ourselves up over not taking Ah Chee against his wishes in the pre-season draft? Something that for myriad reasons is a complete fantasy and would set the AFL, player managers, and probably the UN, on the warpath.

And look, I get. As a master deal-maker myself, even I can find myself a bit hot under the collar when a rolled gold future money spinner of mine like, 'ChatGPT but for dogs', is turned down because the cucks at Google can't see the big picture and instead cover their asses with bs excuses like, 'It doesn't make any sense', or 'dogs don't have money', or 'seriously though how the **** did you get my number?'

My point is that like anything in life, you have to know where you are at or you're going to make endless mistakes. And yes much like the cucks at Google, the Eagles were pushovers and seemingly without any strategy under the last regime, but that is not where we are at now.

Which is why - for the moment - I'm ok with the 'we're reasonable guys', smile and shake hands approach, because we are bereft of talent, an absolute basket case with nothing to sell, and at this stage we are absolutely at the mercy of the AFL, player managers and to a lesser extent, other clubs.

So we won't be arseholes, we won't push our luck, and slowly the narrative will change. The AFL opens its gift bag, and the player managers go, 'its actually a good vibe there, they're good to deal with, I'd hear them out'.

And when we're on the up, an attractive proposition again, and the begging bowls are out away, we can afford to be the hardarses - and I'll be disappointed if we aren't.

Because the failure of the Tim Kelly trade was that Geelong was ruthless and we didn't match them, we didn't know where we were at and we caved, making a rival stronger and with zero incentive for us to do so. The lesson from that is not to always be pricks (Hawthorn) but that we need to pick our moments.

There's a quote that plays on Clausewitz' maxim by someone who's name escapes me, but it goes something like, 'diplomacy is a continuation of war by other means'.

Which is to say, diplomacy doesn't need to be a sign of weakness or surrender but instead another tool to further your interests. Something we can never afford to lose sight of again.

Re. Kelly - Fremantle made it known they were keen and had a pick before us. It was never an option.

Why would we want to take Ah Chee if he doesn’t want to play for us? Do we really want a player who is upset with the club from the get go?

For as much sh** Clarke has copped for being a pushover, he’s gotten deals done and brought in good draftees and players who actually want to play for us. Meanwhile, teams which are typically a**holes at the trade table (Geelong, Hawks, Adelaide) got absolutely nothing done this year.

I think after this trade period we could all cool it on the Dodoro style of trading a lot of people are advocating for and just back the club.

Im not getting worked up about getting AH Chee....I am more concerned about the system and how Adelaide get him just by offering more cash than other clubs pricing them out when there pick in the pre season draft is 16 ......that to me is wrong..

The Crows knew he was uncontracted come the end of October...just sounds dodgy to me

St Kilda have also been highly graded despite reneging (yes Ross you did reneg) on a deal they’d agreed in principle with Leek Aleer

Trying to justify it by saying GWS gave him a contract so he still as a spot is horseshit. Two years on $500k at best is a long way removed from ~$3m over 4 years the Saints offered him

I can’t believe how little blowback they’re getting in the media for what was a really shitty thing to do
I’ll also add that they stripped their dual All Australian of his captaincy and then did everything possible to shove him out the door even though he clearly wanted to stay and contribute to the club, just because he has lost a step and the senior coach doesn’t like him. I guess when you’ve got people like Ross the Toss and Gubby Allen your club is going to act like a bunch of grubs.

Their management team look like a bunch of blokes whose idea of a fun day is sexually harassing the 20 year old bar staff down at the local bowlo.

So, by math, GCS have 3773pts currently. They may end up with a little over 4000 by splitting their 2x first rounders.

If Eagles bid on Uwland at #1, and then Patterson at #2, that is 4933pts after the 10% discount, and would leave them with a real decision on Patterson. Taking Patterson at #2 would mean missing their other academy picks this year and going in to a hefty deficit next year. With no first rounder next year, and the points deficit, they may struggle to match bids next year also.

Anyone keen for:
1. Uwland (GCS)
2. Patterson (WCE)
3. Duursma (WCE)

Even if theoretically there was a way to pry an elite academy kid away from Brisbane or Gold Coast, I’d be very reluctant to use a high pick doing so. I normally don’t worry too much about the go-home factor when it comes to a draft but when you’re talking about a kid who has been wearing GC or Brisbane colours for years and has been assumed as being earmarked to those clubs, I feel like there’s way too much risk of them bailing after a year or two. Plus you know that GCS or Bris would be in their ear immediately telling them that they’d be putting forth offers at the earliest opportunity to bring them home.

He also acknowledged there will be some conversations about it and that there had already been some.

Agree, following your list strategy and respecting a players wish to not move to your club =/= soft/weak.

I really like that we clearly have a list plan and are being v intentional with who/when/what roles we are bringing in. Ah Chee's an automatic B22 inclusion, but not sure he really moves the needle for us - those 5yrs @ $800k per year are likely better spent elsewhere.
Icing type player that Adelaide need.

We need cake type players to build the basis of a team.

If we don't try and get him, Port should.

I mean he wants to go back to Adelaide.
That would throw the cat amongst the pidgeons.

Yeah, but this also means West Coast have to bid on Uwland and Patterson at 1 and 2 and there’s zero chance of us doing that, we care more about protecting one sided relationships than anything else.

But he is out of contract. What is the alternative? If a player can’t go to the PSD when out of contract and a trade can’t be made, what is to stop the club he is at just lowballing him on a new contract at minimum salary and refusing to trade him.

If he can’t set his contract terms, who does? Other clubs can still pick him up but generally won’t as no one wants a disgruntled player and now Adelaide will have to wear the long-term high-dollar value contract.

I have no issue with the out of contract players having this option. It’s the in contract players wanting to break their contracts that are the issue. Not commenting on the legality of this, but they should suffer a percentage “break clause” penalty being a set percentage (e.g. 20%) of their average yearly contract value over the entire contract if it had not been broken for each year they break (paid by the player) with the contracting club having the right to waive part or all of it if they are happy to let the player go. Would bump up costs to players and indirectly any club trying to poach contracted players. The club losing the player would also receive something. It would take some of the power away from players signing long term contracts and just thinking they can leave whenever they feel like it.

Well there you go, I was leaning towards Mick Malthouse but that does make more sense!

It's s no surprise that our esteemed comrade Clarke, the wolf worrier himself, is a student of history. The glorious (Dev)olution has begun!
