The Korn was talking about Butters this morning with Mark Bickley.
Mentioned Collingwood not having the capital, the Hawks, couldn't bring himself to mention us of course.
If it happens in 12 months, it'll be as delicious as the 2021 PF when he almost cried on TV such was the shock.
If the AFL don't change free agency compensation and port finish with say pick 6, we could come to some sort of arrangement where port doesn't match and gets pick 6. Then separately we trade our next 3 first rounders and second rounders and get them as many points as we can to trade them for pick 6.AFL still waiting to confirm Dougie status for port NGA
Most signs are saying he will be listed so they would need pick 2 or 3 level of points

Sanders to Tassie gets us ButtersWho's next year's first round draftee we have to trade out in 2026?
In the past decade or s we have traded out 4 Smith/JUH/Stringer/Griffen former first rounders and brought in 4 Boyd/Schache/Coffield/Treloar* would've been if wasn't preselectionWho's next year's first round draftee we have to trade out in 2026?
Busslinger - JoD - Walker and Will Darcy. If we’re pretty certain on butters and it’s a longer term strategy we should have traded sanders to get a key defender now and give them time in our system
100% that is what's going to happen. We had to keep Sandars this year for that to happen, that's why we wouldnt give him up this year. Tassie compensation which we will trade to Port Adelaide.Sanders to Tassie gets us Butters
Matt Kennedy was originally a 1st round pick too (GWS pick 13).In the past decade or s we have traded out 4 Smith/JUH/Stringer/Griffen former first rounders and brought in 4 Boyd/Schache/Coffield/Treloar* would've been if wasn't preselection
Not really that bad now is it
Then we are in the positive!Matt Kennedy was originally a 1st round pick too (GWS pick 13).
But the timeframe doesn't work - Tassie doesn't start until 2028?100% that is what's going to happen. We had to keep Sandars this year for that to happen, that's why we wouldnt give him up this year. Tassie compensation which we will trade to Port Adelaide.
Correct. Tassie won't have access to draft picks until the 2027 draft - one year too late for a Butters trade. But the timeframe doesn't work - Tassie doesn't start until 2028?
That’s fair, the comments about training and fitness mean more to me than something he may or may not have done as a child. Put a line through him I guess. You're taking about a guy whose training standards are so poor Lyon sent him to train with the VFL squad.
He's not fit enough, not committed enough, hates contested ball and is a shit bloke to boot.
There is zero reason to actually consider him. He kicks 60m and has no other AFL qualities.
Also got a 10 week suspension because Arie brought beers into a training camp in his draft year. You're taking about a guy whose training standards are so poor Lyon sent him to train with the VFL squad.

Edited for brevity.F*CK Port.
I know nothing of the guy that is the subject of this discussion. But I do know a bit about the last guy who was a talented recalcitrant and he was shipped not for peanuts, but the worthless shells that cover them. I dont think that the club would be in a hurry to jump into that fire again.I have no doubt he'd be at the very least a serviceable AFL talent if he took things seriously.
And this one is nowhere near as talented as the last.I know nothing of the guy that is the subject of this discussion. Crozier tooMatt Kennedy was originally a 1st round pick too (GWS pick 13).
Carlton don't have anything other then Sydneys pick in 2027 which will be in the 20sThe Butters smoke is undeniable.
There’s still a lot of time to play out.
The Hawks not wasting their assets on a 30 year old Merrett is a potential problem. The Blues getting assets for Curnow is another.
I would expect both of those teams to get as dirty as they can to lure Butters over. Sam Mitchell probably has a restaurant booked for the two of them for July 2026 already.
We were “balls deep” in Barrass but got pipped by the Hawks going above and beyond what the Dogs are willing to do during the season. There are huge egos involved at that level. Players probably love opposing coaches ‘breaking the code’ to wine and dine them mid season.
Obviously the signs pointed to, if Butters was hypothetically an unrestricted free agent in 2025, yeah he would have come. But he has a long time to think about what’s important to him. Hawks can sell him a more successful culture. Blues have a larger base for off-field earnings. We have his bromance with the Bont and that he obviously still has a soft spot for the club he supported.
maybe he does really have his mind made up and thats that. It definitely benefits us that he’s an RFA if he does nominate us. Port either bottoms out and gets pick 2 as compo, or 3 x firsts from us.
I don’t know if the club is necessarily with the times on this stuff and that is essentially the concern around Butters. Just because we’re in the box seat now doesn’t mean we should get complacent and watch other, larger clubs get aggressive in winning him over - because they’ll try.
if other senior coaches are meeting with him, Bevo needs to drop the moral stance and take Butters to dinner and put on a show with his guitar if that’s necessary. Or take him surfing with Cody. Whatever.
Getting a top 10 player at really the start of his prime, to nominate us, would be such a defining moment for the club.
Agree. I would normally be worried about the Hawks, but I really don’t think Butters would want to be going out to Dingley. The Blues will have the cap and the picks, but not sure if they can sell him the on field success. Really think it’s down to us, Cats and Pies. The Butters smoke is undeniable.
