I think we all forget that the reason an AFL club exists is to qualify for and retain good draft picks. We only play out the season to see who gets which picks. If you are premiers then you actually lose because you get the worst draft pick.

Honestly, draft picks are there to help you win a premiership. If you choose to spend them all on one player then who cares, if it helps you win?

I disagreed strongly with the pick based on having passed over KPFs and picking what seemed to be a speculative X factor option for medium fwd, over some more powerful, prolific types... but he needs to be given time before we can judge him as a player and whether the recruiters misjudged him, not just the type we needed more.
Agreed. I didn't like the pick but you can't be judged off 1 season. I don't have much faith in him TBH, but let's see. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of time finding your feet in a new situation and a fresh pre season without anything else going on.

As a result of the Wilbur and Ollie move, a female friend of mine who is a passionate 30 year Swans supporter, is pulling the plug on the Swans. She is outraged.

Absolutely loved Wilbur. I think that she is not alone. Their would be a lot of young female supporters who loved him, and a fair few older ones too. He presented a good image for the club. I wonder if the club considered this.

Yes. The club should 100% consulted your friend on whether or not to trade players. And because she is offended it was the wrong thing to do.

Did you ever consider we just gained 10x the supporters than we lost due to feelings.

He might have preferred North than going back to his current club. Same with Merrett.

No harm in trying.
There were 2 main reasons of him getting out of Carlton though.
1 - Contending
2 - Out of Melbourne's footy bubble.

That's why it was GC, Geelong, Sydney.

I liked Will too. I would prefer we’d not lost him. But he was hardly one of the faces of the club. And he never finished in our B&F top ten, reflecting the gap between his most and least impactful games.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I am in the middle of a small skin cancer op and the debate has helped me pass the time.

And for the record - I am on the Cox train. I’m not 100% confident but I respect his right to make his mark on the team and look forward to seeing how it goes.
Hope all is on the improve.

If the Tigers had taken Dattoli at 21, we would have taken Trainor at 22

If the Tigers had taken Jesse Dattoli, who was also under high consideration, the Swans would have grabbed Trainor. But Sydney had ranked the small forward Dattoli ahead of the taller Trainor and was glad he was available to them, having already tried to get in earlier to secure him.

Here's the whole article: https://www.afl.com.au/news/1260258...hind-the-scenes-at-the-2024-telstra-afl-draft

We didn't decide against taking Trainor (which is what you said) we didn't have a chance at picking him.

I hate that we used this pick on him but Bowman seems a good kid, a decent player and a good clubman. Give him the best development and opportunities.

Pick 3 is way more valuable than any of the firsts we gave away. We'd probably have to give up the 3 firsts we gave away to get pick 3 and even then it'd depend on who held pick 3 and who they rated in the draft as to whether they'd agree to it.
Who mentioned Pick 3? What the **** do we want pick 3 for? We need the lower pickS, 20 onward for our Academy Boys. I sad; THREE FIRST ROUND PICKS WE GAVE FOR CURNOW, 2025, 2026 AND 2O27 PLUS HAYWARD. We already had a 3rd rounder for Florent in a separate deal.

I think you’ve completely missed his/her point.

The term “first rounder” is bandied around as though all first rounders are equal. They are not.

As I said in an earlier post, there's plenty of fans hurting over this move. Besides Heeney, Oli and Wilbur are the favourite players of my 13 yo daughter. She is very angry at Cox and would fire him and Chris Keane if she could. I think Pridham acknowledged this by addressing the trade period directly with an open letter on social media.

But I can see what the club is trying to achieve and if Charlie can light it up in 2026, all will be forgiven very quickly. However, if we have another bad season, especially if it coincides with Charlie playing poorly or out with injury, I think pressure will build on Cox and co such that some heads will have to roll.

We have choices in how we split the senior and rookie list. The last two spots on the list (ex Cat B rookies) can be either. I haven’t looked to see what assumptions you’ve made on the likely split, but a choice remains.

Given I can only think of three players on our rookie list at the moment - Hamling, Hanily and Edwards (B) - I presume you are assuming we’ll carry the maximum senior list. Given we’re obliged to draft at least three in the ND, I guess that’s a valid assumption unless we move some more onto the rookie list.

Yep. I made the assumption.

They have not said Rampe and Lloyd are signed. Maybe because they go to the rookie list.
I dunno yet. I have to publish my list after changes happen so I have to make assumptions.

Thanks Liz.
