I've been all over this place on the Curnow trade.
But as much as we love them, were Ollie and Wilbur the players to dig us out of a hole at 3/4 time in a final?

Tasmania is coming into the draft in 2027, so clubs need to be trade aggressively in the interim.
The club and the new coach know what they want, so I think we accept that. It's their neck on the line.

Welcome Charlie, let's have a big pre-season from you..

Imo the risk of the go home factor with top draft picks is also an issue now. Look at jfh gone from kangas to port, Harley Reid was rumored to be close to leaving too and we also have Chad who was 50/50.

We need to improve on the development side of things, hopefully mal coaching the VFL will help immensely.

Also the depth issue is overblown. We've upgraded on Hayward & florent was unable to crack our team which had numerous injuries.

The biggest risk we've taken is the lost opportunity to be flexible in the next few off-seasons due to the lesser value picks. To a lesser extent there's likely to be loss of some trust in players seeing through their contract with us.

I think players will be fairly realistic.
They know clubs want to win flags.
They want to win flags.

I reckon players can get their head around that and get on with it with their new teammates.

Exactly how I’ve seen it. Basically two firsts for Charlie and early second for Hayward and a pick slide in 2027 to get picks this year. It’s fair. It’s a bit lazy to just say oh it’s 3 firsts, it’s not. It’s two. We’ve basically just traded out our first in two drafts that’s it
With our history of great first round selections the more we trade out, the better.

Bullshit.

We traded Hayward too. Is he not a first rounder? Is he imaginary/

Drafting is a inexact process but I think our BF board would generally agree than the club's recent efforts have been poor.
We need to understand why it is so.
If it means bringing in recruiters from other clubs, that have been successful in an area where we have failed, so be it.
If it cost overs, provide the funding. If it means moving on our own people, again so be it.
Fix the underlying problem.
Bringing in Curnow, trading away 1st rd picks IMO merely creates other issues.

We went all in on Franklin when we also had some very fine players on our list and didn't collect the big prize, so tying Curnow into a timescale with Heeney/Warner is to my mind fairly irrrelevant.

I fundamentally disagree that list mgmt ' has to be based on the now.'
I actually think list mgmt/recruiting should always be a forward looking exercise.
Doesn't mean you can't address ' immediate needs' as we may have done with Rosas/Serong, but given our poor drafting, lack of depth (exacerbated by trading out Florent/Hayward) and now taking ourself out of the 1st rd of upcoming drafts, I do fear this is our Tim Kelly moment.

I hope I'm wrong (well mostly, the ego would take a hit :) ),but as they say in the classics only time will tell.
My thoughts exactly.
Swans had the perfect draft for the future, trade for gaps in the list which was sustainable. We kept on contending and regenerating.
I don't want the all in hope for a premiership in the next two years and mortgage the house and if we don't win one we are stuffed for years.
I Never want the club to go all out. But we are bereft of 1st rounders for the next two years. That could be a problem unless we just draft mainly academy players. Then that is just matching higher picks which we can do.

If not then we will fall.

I see only 4 legitimate key backs - Hamling has one year to go and Edwards is untested. Melican and McCartin both come with injury history.
Serong, Snell and Andrew are undersized IMO, either physically or game style. I see them as Rampe types, 3rd talls at best.

The numbers seem OK, but the quality concerns me. Three of them could easily be off the list in 12 months time
None of them are Rampe types as you put it. Rampe was 183cm. Serong is 194cm, Edwards 197cm, Snell 194cm, Andrew 193cm. not all forwards are 200cm. Only 7 in the whole comp. Tilthorpe, Darcy, Ben and Max King, McKay, Neale, Chol, The rest range between 191 and 199, Most tall forwards are in the 192-196 range. I don't think any of our Key Backs are in the Rampe undersized range at all. I don't care who is untried. You have to try them to see if they are any good. The other thing is truly top quality key Defenders don't grow on trees. See what happened with Essendon, they thought they were getting Stephen Silvagni in McKay, who they got was an interceptor who is pretty shit at defending. If you take away Stewart's intercept game he isn't much good at defending either. True lock down defenders are rare as Hen's Teeth,

We have Tommy and Melly, both have played the majority of the last 3 years. Edwards, who until injured last year was developing very nicely as a key Defender, and his opponents rarely hit the scoreboard. He is 197cm and about 100keg. He's a Big Boy. plus the bugger can really play. He is incredibly strong and makes me think of Reg. But you probably don't know who Reg is, you might be a bit too young.

Addition to our academy, I'd be picking away at the bones of the two QLD teams over the coming years. Their academies/squads are starting to explode with talent. They can't fit them all in.

The difference is Curnow took a pay cut, Bud didn't. We also freed up cap space and the cap has improved a lot since Bud. I am not all in on curnow, as I think him lazy and he doesn't defend. He gets in a huff a bit too. But from his interview, he seems a nice lad. Just need Joel, Paps & Logan to put it up him about not chasing and he WILL change.

Rampe 187cm*
Never seen Edwards play, they must rate him, seems like they’ve been super patient with him.

Yes. The club should 100% consulted your friend on whether or not to trade players. And because she is offended it was the wrong thing to do.

Did you ever consider we just gained 10x the supporters than we lost due to feelings.
I doubt Charlie will even increase the membership one person. He is not Buddy, Bazza, Big Tony or Wazza. He is a quiet country boy who can kick goals and reality is, he has no profile in Sydney. NRL, ARU and Soccer people wouldn't have clue who he is. In fact, if you did a Vox Pop in Sydney Downtown I think 98% of people would say; WHO?

That is because you do not understand people.
Doubting Charlies influence on young people is on you.
He will have a profile when he starts playing.

You bring up the most inocuous points that validate or invalidate your own arguments.
You are a paradox to your own posts.

Maybe because you live so far away your opinions on people seem so far away.

Do you watch the Reserves at all? If you had, then you would have seen him in 2024. The coach was crap but this young bloke held his own and was a rock down back. 183/187 who gives a flying ****. All I am saying is the closest any of our current Key Backs come to him is 6cm taller at 193cm (Andrew). They are none of them undersized.

Wil was unlucky to suffer a broken leg in a match last year against Pies. That stuffed his season. So, no soft tissue problems, no Anterior problems, none of the ongoing ones, only bad bloody luck . Yep they have persevered with him because 197cm 100 keg Key Defenders do not grow on trees.

Just passing on some feedback.

She is pretty knowledgeable about the game and the reaction is about more than just about Wilbur, she thinks the decision is bad for the team as a whole. CC' s knees are a particular concern of hers as well.

Never seen her so angry. As I said, just giving feedback.

The angriest I’ve ever been with the club was shortly after the end of the 2013 season when it was announced that Bud was coming to the club as a free agent on an exorbitantly long and expensive contract. He was a jumped-up, self-obsessed mercenary, coming here to to up his pension fund. He’d create disharmony in the playing group and our salary cap would be stuffed for a decade, long after he’d hung up the boots.

Woe betide anyone who got in the way of my shopping trolley as I stopped in at the supermarket on the way home from work that night.

Didn’t take long for my anger to subside.

That is pretty much me in the last day. I hated the price we paid for Curnow. Hated it.
But then I looked at next years and the years after draft picks. I have hit a calm period.
Curnow was the best we could do. He was the only FF worth a crack. There was nothing else.

I am actually OK with it all. I am all in with the Swans decision to do this.
And it is against all of my usual feel right isms which are usually right.
