The list managers: organic growthhttps://www.adelaidenow.com.au/sport/afl
Adelaide list boss Justin Reid says it was important that the Crows kept its first round picks for the next three years to be flexible in this draft and going forward with some “tempting” players out of contract at the end of next year.
The stalemate between the Crows and Brisbane over dual-premiership player Callum Ah Chee could not be broken on the trade period deadline on Wednesday night.
The Lions wanted a first-round pick from the Crows, while Adelaide offered a future second and third round pick for the 28-year-old.
But with no resolution the Crows will walk Ah Chee to the pre-season draft.
Reid told The Advertiser it was disappointing but it wasn’t a surprising result.
“We are certainly disappointed,” he said.
“For Cal and his family that we couldn’t work through something with Brisbane but we will stay committed to each other.
“But I guess on the back of that we have our first round picks in 2025, 2026 and 2027, which will give us some flexibility in this draft period.
“Unfortunately it means we need to go the long route with Cal but that means we hold our round one draft position which we were firm on.
“Certainly not surprised (that it played out the way it did), but not one that you would think with a 28-year-old that is out of contract that should get to this.”
Their search for an A-Grade midfielder this trade period
“We had a lot of looks, a lot of conversations,” he said.
“We were pretty deliberate in what we wanted to do so we are not going to sell the farm.
“We think there is a lot of organic growth on the list itself.
“Late in the year with what Izak (Rankine) went through (his suspension) and Josh Rachele being injured we think they are two players who can add a lot through the midfield.
“Sid Draper having another pre-season and Dan Curtin we think can go back through the midfield so we think there are some players on the list that have some real upside so we want to continue to expose the list, that is very deliberate.
“But we are not shying away from if there was someone there that we really wanted to get in we would certainly look at that and we will continue to do that going forward but it has to line up..
“And if it didn’t line up we wouldn’t just trade for the sake of trading.”

If we have strong interest in him, then we might be looking at trading down as he is likely to be in the 2nd / 3rd round so maybe we drop 3 or 4 spots and grab a 2nd and take a back end 1st round player and Curtin.Where's Dan Curtins brother likely to fall in the draft? It would be nice to grab him.
Well Chris Burgess wasnt offered a contract as per our social media today so there's that
REID ALSO SPOKE TO THE ADVERTISER ON:
The Crows’ plans for the draft
“We will stick to our draft order so we will go do that work with Hamish (recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie) and the team,” he said.
“We’ve still got some list management decisions to make so we will get through the weekend, have some more conversations early next week.
“We will stick to our draft order and work out what that looks like.”
Reid basically confirming we'll be delisting someone (or someones) to get that extra spot for Ah Chee.
“We think there is a lot of organic growth on the list itself.
You don't agree?
There is obviously something in the works for next year if they weren't willing to give the 2 f2 picks
I agree, but I don’t think it’s a strategy for short term success while our fwd and back lines are in their primeYou don't agree?
I hope so, but still a lot of water to go under the bridgeThere is obviously something in the works for next year if they weren't willing to give the 2 f2 picks
They might have targets for end of 26 hence why they wouldn't trade picks ?I agree, but I don’t think it’s a strategy for short term success while our fwd and back lines are in their prime
Again, a lot can happen in 12 months, hopefully all our targets aren’t off the table by thenThey might have targets for end of 26 hence why they wouldn't trade picks ?
I'm sure they do but getting them to commit is a different thing altogetherThey might have targets for end of 26 hence why they wouldn't trade picks ?
I think the messaging was all over the shop. You don't agree?
I really don't think we looked at Jack Steele at all, I think that was just media speculation,I think the messaging was all over the shop.
Oliver was mooted a long way out. Whether I agree he would have been the right fit the message seemed to be 'one short '
Our swivel to Petracca confirmed that.
Our interest in Steele etc also felt the club recognised we were one short
Only to fall back on organic growth
That provides its own issues with Nicks clearly not a farmer
I wonder if we are going to put a lot of work into Sanders from the bulldogs. OOC end of next year but the lure of Tassie is there. Still if we turn his head and he could sign long term, it matters not. I think he could be a very good addition to our midfield based on upside and ageAgain, a lot can happen in 12 months, hopefully all our targets aren’t off the table by then
Like Crow till I die mentioned - we should be ‘hoping for the best, preparing for the worst’, and so far it feels like we haven’t really succeeded at covering our bases with that last partI think the messaging was all over the shop.

He’d certainly be a good addition, especially OOCI wonder if we are going to put a lot of work into Sanders from the bulldogs. OOC end of next year but the lure of Tassie is there. To me, that was he right guy for us to target. 30 year olds that would cost the earth I am not so hot on for where our list is at.He’d certainly be a good addition, especially OOC
Will be fascinating if he signs a 1-year extension. The Dogs would basically be conceding a move back to Tas
Lets see if we pick up a good mid in the draft also , greeves , onley etcLike Crow till I die mentioned - we should be ‘hoping for the best, preparing for the worst’, and so far it feels like we haven’t really succeeded at covering our bases with that last part
For sureLets see if we pick up a good mid in the draft also , greeves , onley etc
Will take a little while for any player we draft to be ready, hell our pick 21 from two years ago hasn’t even played a game yetLets see if we pick up a good mid in the draft also , greeves , onley etc
Fair enough if we want to rely on the Rankine/Curtin/Draper/Sanders/Soligo/draft pick nucleus, but I wouldn’t say we’ll be ready to win a premiership in at least the next two years, if soTo me, that was he right guy for us to target. 30 year olds that would cost the earth I am not so hot on for where our list is at.
SO, if Mutineer gets his wish and we can draft Onley - 194cm ball carrying mid in this draft and we could trade for Sanders end of next year, we might just have our midfield battery set with who we have and the new additions
