Is everyone still confident re Smit making it on the AFL?

The new rules should favour him but is he good enough?

Everyone keeps saying Smit to ruck.
Thou he was average in the ruck last yr.
He performed better yr prior tbh.
I actually strangely thought his best game was late in season AS a defender, then got injured.
Young and raw, taking time but shown glimpses.

He's only just turned 20, hopefully next year will see lots more improvement.

For retention: Our tall forward backup is West (assuming Buller starts), Howes and then... options that would need a real leap in 2026 to be relevant. Howes while young is physically up to playing at senior level.

Against retention: we'll be signing McCarthy and will need a forward spot for him in the VFL. It's unknown if we have tall forward targets in the draft or other signings.

Unless we sign an AFL ready option, I think Howes gets another contract. Not checked our list spots though.

All we can safely say at this point is they weren’t not offered contracts.

I'm glad we've done the right thing by Noah and given him a bit of time to prove himself. Other clubs have axed players (picked up in the mid-season draft) after just six months, but I wouldn't want to see us do that. I hope he really comes on next season, shows a lot more consistency, and turns into a player for us.
