So, at this stage, I think (?)

Current Carlton 2026 coaching group:

AFL Senior Coach:
Michael Voss

Assistant coach (defence): Ash Hansen

Assistant coach (forwards): Josh Fraser

Assistant coach (midfield stoppage and structure): Tim Clarke

Assistant coach (midfield): Leigh Adams

Ruck coach: Matthew Kreuzer

Head of Development: Jordan Russell

VFL Senior Coach and development: Damian Truslove

Development coach: Torin Baker

Development coach: Ash Close

Leadership and Culture: Travis Boak

Is this also correct?
Out: Hamill, Greaves, Luke Power, Tom Lonergan
In: Josh Fraser, Leigh Adams, Damien Truslove, Ash Close, Travis Boak

If so, whilst I think a couple of the 'outs' are significant (Power and Lonergan - who are looking to new things), I think our 'ins' more than compensate for this...

From my little knowledge, all our current crop strike me as calm and composed, and good communicators with the player. But time will tell...

Tim Clarke and Jordan Russell I suspect will be let go of next year. Lucky to survive this year tbh, midfield and forwards were lost at sea... I guess they're contracted and we didn't want to pay them out...

Not mentioned here either

"Ash Close joins Josh Fraser, Leigh Adams and Damian Truslove as new additions to the Carlton coaching group for the 2026 AFL season. "

AFL article says 'set to join Carlton'. Could there be something in that he may have to wait until an official list lodgement that he is delisted as a retired player before he enters into a contract with another club?

Russell has effectively been 'replaced' with Josh Fraser taking on forwards, and Russell taking a development role (where, I think, he is done OK in the past). Tim Clarke...? Yeah, but we've added to this space by bringing in Leigh Adams. 2 ways to see this. Maybe we didn't want to pay out Clarke, or maybe they thought Clarke is OK and just wanted to boost this area...

Boak is still officially a listed Port player until list lodgement, isn't he?

Officially retired

We've had Clarke since 2015... I know he had a brief stint at GC, but he's been back long enough now. Time for a new voice in that midfield, there are so many flaws with the way they setup and work for each other...

Think Clarke stays as long as Cripps does

Both highly rated. I think Russell will go well in development

Given our game plan etc I am loath to criticise them

I am happy with what we have done though. Only question I have is who is in charge of game plan/strategy

Yes, Clarke is highly rated and well liked by some players, Cripps in particular...

I'm happy with what we've done too, and understand we can't fix everything in one off season.

While our game plan was poor, that's still no excuse, for some of the ill discipline our mids shown over the years.

Over Clarke's tenure we've been excellent in clearance and stoppage. One of the best teams in the comp consistently.

The rest of the ball movement and defensive schemes through the middle of the ground you can either attribute to insipid running and kicking ability across the park, or you can blame it on the coaching staff.

Given we've just had a complete overhaul of our outside run and carry players this off season, and we've kept Clarke on... I think it's clear where the senior figures at the club believe the blame lies. No coach in the world was going to be able to get us moving the ball like Collingwood or Brisbane with the lack kicking talent and runners we've had on our list.

We've been excellent in clearance because we've had a clearance beast leading the charge in our midfield for ages now...

Show me where I said we were poor in that regard. I want a direct quote.

There are so many aspects that make up midfield play...

  • d50 stoppage setup has been a joke
  • Walsh and Cripps going for the same ball...
  • gravitating to the ball carrier
  • stagnant
  • not lowering the eyes i50

None of that has anything to do with getting the midfield to move the ball like Collingwood... or Brisbane. And yes, it is the direct responsibility of the coaching staff to identify these flaws and address them. Hasn't been done.

10 years is an eternity for a football coach, 3 year gap aside, that's still 7 years. Next year will be 8. It's time to move him on and get a fresh voice in there for our upcoming midfield brigade.

In your opinion. Clearly the club rates Clarke enough to keep him on, throwing out some arbitrary number to say his time is up is just a nonsense argument to support a personal opinion you hold. Nigel Lappin has been at the Cats for how long? Any calls for them to 'get a fresh voice in there'?

And on the point about Cripps hard carrying the midfield, even in 2023 when Cripps was well down on his best form we were still a strong clearance and stoppage team and still one of the top few at scoring from stoppage, so that also doesn't really hold up.

Wow... this again? Maybe we get the mods to put an 'IMO' disclaimer at the bottom of everyone's posts just to clarify for you :D

You mean prev admin rated him... Brad Lloyd...

He was contracted and he wasn't let go so we don't have to pay him out. It's not an arbitrary number, it's a fact and not nonsense at all...

Nigel Lappin has a different role at the Cats and the results are working well for them, so why would they need a fresh voice? Strange logic... get rid of someone who's performing well... wow

Hahaha cherry pick one year... good on ya. Not how it works though... I didn't even make a point about poor clearance numbers at all... just something you've pulled out your rear end and ran with... I suppose that's why when I asked for a direct quote, you didn't deliver... shame.

How about you address all the other flaws that I actually noted or can't you do that?

Is there anything available to the public confirming Clarke was contracted for 2026? From what I remember amongst the speculation is that Hansen and Hamill were the two assistant coaches still contracted for 2026 at the club.

And it is an arbitrary number. That's a fact. Just because someone has been in a role for a certain amount of time doesn't mean they have to be replaced with a fresh voice. If they're getting results year on year then why wouldn't they be able stay on for as long they want, just like Lappin at Geelong?

Can you actually point me to anything based on fact that supports the idea that Clarke needs to be replaced or is somehow doing a bad job?
