2025 List Management Discussion - Part 5

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

A big year next year, and we could attract Butters. We could offer a fair bit, just need room in the cap. Would put us in a premiership window. Plus the fact that he is a dead ringer for Ramsay Bolton inspires fear in the opposition.
The Darley bogan is off to the Bulldogs or Geelong. Probably Footscray as Geelobg will try to lowball Port.

what if the wheels fall off both those clubs.

danger pulled geelong over the line in that prelim. i think both danger and cameron are on the decline big time.

Doesn't matter, I have family in the Marsh and they know all he wants to do is get back to Darley. Christ knows why, but he is a genuine bogan and his family is as rough as bags.

must have promised him a farm where he can "cook" his own bath salts

My family weren't effusive about his family, although they are Bacchus Marsh fans and he and his family are Darley through and through.
A Temu Crom v Port supporters.
There has to be something wrong with someone who has left Darley and voluntarily moves back there.

Kosi was sub that day and he and the other players were filthy about it.

Justin was terrible in that game. The players were going out of the way to get the ball into his hands....Pete Hellier would have had four shots the way they gave it to him. He scored 4 behinds.

The appropriately named Matt Finnis was a pearl of a bloke and tried his best to put some gloss on St Kilda on a time when our stock was as low as it had ever been.

People forget how grim it was back then; he joined in 2014 about 6 months after Richo was hired to take the club out of the dwarf fire sorry garbage fire that was the Watters era, working out of Nowhere-land (Seaford) for 3 years with a crippling stadium deal, massive debt, a passive president and limpid board, rubbish sponsors and possibly the league's worst list including the newly-drafted Billings, a handful of aging stars from the first Lyon era, and a whole lot of no-marks. Nobody wanted anything to do with us and we had no money.

We couldn't get anyone good to even wave to us, so Finnis made a few risky left-field appointments which did not come off, and his legacy has to wear that. If he'd got those right, we could have avoided a lot of painful years, but also those appointments weren't ridden by president, board or CEO, who were looking to avoid drama and instability after over a decade of coaching changes, scandals, and other clownish stories coming out of our club - and you have to say No Man's Land probably was welcome after so many years of repeatedly shitting outselves in public, the same way the Demons are probably going to be stoked with Jack Steele after so many years with Clayton Oliver.

The calm of Finnis was probably what we needed at that time but if the admin had been a bit more demanding maybe we could have sorted ourselves out onfield quicker.

On a not entirely unrelated tangent, I wonder if we'd not been able to get Ross back, what kind of state we'd be in currently.

Bassat has been a godsend really.

Great post!

I always wanted Bassat to put his money into the club but it was actually his time that was needed.

Butters won’t be going to Geelong.

They won’t give up the capital to get a deal done. Weak as a glass of iced water.

Bulldogs actually have more assets. But they won’t want to shift them either.

I wouldn’t mind guessing that another club will sneak in and grab Butters. It will be a team contending or about to contend.

it will be a fascinating watch.

Probably Hawks.

I think they a fair chance.

Although, geographically they are as far away from Darley as Moorabbin is.

The point we need to remember is that a trade also has to be done. The days of Geelong lowballing clubs seems to be a thing of the past.

St Kilda put them in their place with the Marshall thing, and Carlton contemptuously dismissed them with the Curnow trade.

Bulldogs also have a history of being difficult to trade with.

Port will play hard ball. It could be a case of a satisfactory club being prepared to get a deal done with them.

Just as an aside; Darley - continuous AFL club, Cobras aka Bacchus, they changed names a few times and aren't as great, so in that sense, you go Darley to play with better players mostly.

It's all Bacchus anyway, and people always forget Maddingley.

This will be an unpopular opinion but 18 year old Kozi had more potential than Roo.

Kozi should have been this clubs goat

Any ideas why we are stacking our draft hand for 2027

Currently:
1, 2, 3 (MELB), 3, 3 (WCE), 4 (MELB), 4

Do we have an NGA or Father Son prospect?
I think it stands to reason that if you are trading in Future 3rds and 4ths, it makes sense to get Future Futures as it gives you more collateral over a longer time period (i.e., you technically have 3 Drafts and Trade Periods that you could use those picks for - the current draft, and the next two years).

I don't include the Future 1st and Future 2nds, only because they tend to have a greater hit rate of elite talent, and clubs would probably be more open to looking over the first two years for them (i.e., current and next years Draft and Trade Period) depending on which they want to target.

The impact of Tassie puts it on the nose a bit, but I think having more collateral over a longer period is enough of a justification to do it. We may have NGAs that go well next year and we need to trade them into 2026 for points, etc.
