Will Hayward
Spritely Sydney Swans forward Will Hayward enjoyed a rocketing start to his career as he became the 11th-youngest player in the AFL era to reach 50 career goals in 2018. The 2016 draftee’s nippy pace and cunning goal awareness have made him a dangerous option in coach John Longmire’s forward line. A broken jaw and a persistent hip injury limited Hayward to just 12 goals in 13 senior games in 2019, but the South Australian is attacking the 2020 campaign on the back of his first full pre-season. Don’t be surprised if the exciting Swan finds himself on a wing this year.

Will Hayward
DOB: 26 October 1998
DEBUT: 2017
DRAFT: #21, 2016 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Walkerville (SA)/North Adelaide (SANFL)

to be honest i would switch off too if i had watched roberts play week in week out making errors every game that were horrendous while at the same time being made a scapegoat for performances which were poor but were acceptable given the diabolical situation in the forward line.

And having players as important as amartey and mcinerney get themselves suspended while we had injuries as long as your arm.
I remember feeling off about the way Florent was managed during that period - really felt like he was set up to fail and was given no chance to regain motivation.

Sometimes being "friends" with your players is counterproductive.
Hayward by all reports is a coaches pet. Longmire was a complete sucker in that regard.

I really don't care about his or Florent's sob stories. We made sure they could stay together to continue their stupid Doozy business and they should be grateful.

Roos made the tough decision regarding Schneider and Dempster too. And Schneider was my favourite. I can very confidently say I don't value Florent or Hayward that much and they're easily replaceable.

Football is a business at the end of the day.

This isn't about making the decision to get rid of them, it's about how they were managed and communicated to.

No matter how it’s was communicated, and there will be 3 versions of that, there is not a nice way to do it. It needed a band aid rip-off and it got done.

I’m sure it was delivered as a perfectly executed shitbsandwich.

What did you want them to do? Send him a Christmas Cake and a rum?

It's business. We have made a decision that is best for business aka the team. As nice a piece Hayward is, he's never going to be elite okay, lets not pretend he's Toby Greene on the field okay.

Florent should have been traded last year if we are half honest, but whatever this trade suits all parties

Feel the article was sensationalized in Florent case when you get dropped to the VFL for a decent period of time with all the injuries we had i dont think you can hardly be "surprised" or didn't see it "coming" or Ollie manager was doing a disservice to him.

Haywood no doubt after signing a massive deal just last season probably the last thing on his mind while in Argentina.

That's what happens when you can't get a kick , it's footy , you get dropped
Let's just keep going the way we were

I guess Florent thought since we were idiotic enough to sign him until 2029 or whatever that he felt comfy and cozy and he could slack off all he wanted.

We signed away two very mediocre players who can be easily replaced, for a very good big-bodied marking forward who we dearly lack. I think we've done very well here. Carlton suck bigtime, so they'll also benefit.

It's a win win for both clubs and I have zero time for sentimentality after the horror show of 2022 and 2024.

If Curnow does his knee. Fair enough. But I think it was a risk worth taking.

While I like Hayward and Florent, it doesn't worry me, and I know that they will be disappointed but excited for the future.

They are humans involved in a big machine and none of them are bigger than the club. They are also smart enough to know that if it is good enough for them to use other club offers to get a better deal from your own club, then the club can also use those same lucrative deals to measure a player's value to the club. Eg, if Florent negotiated a good deal when he re-signed, then the club saw it as fair value because they expected him to perform at a certain level to justify the $. However, if his form slips then it no longer justifies the high $ they negotiated and therefore it puts them in a vulnerable position when the club is reviewing its list and salary cap. They are exposed by the high $ value they have negotiated and the club may potentially move to rectify this through a trade.

Even so, both players have landed on their feet with an even more lucrative deal/longer term with another club so I'm pretty sure they will get over it very quickly.

100% if you don't take risks you won't win. I'm happy to roll the dice while we have Chad.

I love how people are crapping on about the club being ruthless.

The same club that was bent over backwards in the deal with Carlton, capitulating so that Carlton got exactly what they wanted?
Geelong walked away not prepared to meet Carlton's demands, Ess & Haw held the line in the Merrett talks, but hey we made it clear the magnificent 4 were untouchable. Bravo us.

The same list mgmt team that gave Riak Andrew a one extension on his original 2 year deal before he had even played a reserves game?

My job in days gone by involved the restructuring of companies and in the majority of cases it would result in people being being sacked.
I had no prior relationship with those people but I understood it's a difficult moment and would try to handle it with compassion and ensure appropriate support.

Considering the long relationship between the players and Cox a couple of phone calls telling the players to **** off is hardly the way to engender trust from the remaining playing group going fwd.
Florent; "They pretty much just said we want you out. We want you gone."
Hayward; "Over the whole period, I had two phone calls with 'Coxy'," "That's pretty much it. Those phone calls made it pretty easy to want to join Carlton."

Instead of having two players closing in on 200 games with the club, a number of 1st rd picks that would hopefully bring exciting young talent into the club (if we actually employed a competent recruiting/list mgmt team) we have put all our eggs in the 29yo Curnow basket on a multi-million dollar contact until the end of 2030.

And of course that same ruthless list mgmt team that felt the need to extend Hamling's contract and bring in Serong on a 3yr deal, even though we have 3 tall defenders yet to debut, yet all 3 have had their contacts extended to the end of 2027.
Our depth is poor and giving away 1st rd draft picks is hardly likely to improve it.

While all this was taking place we had our CEO reading the sports news on the evening bulletin in Perth.
Carlton's CEO, the vastly experienced Graham Wright, was with his team's list mgmt team at Marvel during the final day of the trade period.

We lost Harley, Gardiner, Beatson and Longmire and replaced them with Pavlich, Cameron, Keane and Cox.

I'm tipping in the future 2025 will be looked upon as a watershed moment for the club and it will not be viewed as one with fondness.

But there is also a fine line when it comes to managing your players in the current age. As a coach you have to communicate with your players in a way that works, not in a way that suits your own preference. Part of coaching is to not disillusion your players - and that involves identifying each players individual needs/psychology and varying the way you communicate with each of them to keep them switched on.

i.e, we needed Florent at certain points last year - but you can clearly tell he was switched off mentally, which affects the team. If the communication aspect caused part of that, then that's a coaching failure.
In a nutshell, you can't expect loyalty if you don't show it.

I fear you are right Hairy.Sold the farm for short term gain. Depth is poorer now. Painted ourselves into a corner with contracts.May not be able to match Academy bids. Undermined the trust of the players.

Smacks of poor strategic planning (for which the current admin can't be fully blamed) and tends to point to a downward trajectory unless the new management can turn this around.

There will be blood on the walls if they don't.

Can't agree with most of that i feel this is the most acceptable period of time where you can sell off your current and future assets for a A grade forward without to much risk due to severely compromised drafts.

If we didnt get Curnow and he kicks 60+ for another team next season we would be setting the club on fire for not doing the deal.

I agree Keane has a lot to prove and so far his short tenure has left a lot to be desired with his selections.
