Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

went back and watched a few games of last season. fitness big issue , 1st halves of quarters, the run carry , hitting targets, in most games was there. pressure not so much. but besides fitness ,Leadership was the biggest issue . The player who’s stood up and said come with me boys let’s do this come with me? (Reid ,Baker a few times kelly )did this last year but when they were tagged or couldn’t get into the game we struggled big time.

so this draft for mine ,leadership , 1st possession and accumulation should be our goal.my view on drafting is
with current picks
best available 1st pick (Duursma)
2nd pick need. ( Sharp )
3rd speculative or project or next best available (Dovaston) pressure, scoreboard ,impact ,endurance.

Mate name 1 occasion this year Kelly said ' come with me boys lets do this ' and put in a full shift?

He spent the year jogging sulking and stat padding when games had gone cold.

Don’t think highly of waterman?

Gaff was a winger

Plenty of gun mids taken at 30 - just not by us

We were discussing drafting and bringing in mids not forwards. We seem to be fine drafting talls, just not as successful taking mids. The picks we have had to use was part of the reason.

Wing is midfield. So are rucks.

Few jaws would be on the floorr if Farrow went above Sharp. Stranger things have happened. We won't know until we know, can't wait to find out.
And when we pick Farrow with Sharp still on the table?

I note that in some more recent media reports, Farrow has been linked to Melbourne quite strongly and even to Essendon as a possibility in at least one article I read

So he might not even be at pick 9 if we get it off Carlton

Similar thing happened with Bo Allan closer to the draftlast year with suggestions Richmond might consider him with one of their picks before ours as well as Melbourne. Obviously that didn’t eventuate though

Farrow’s ladder is being matched by Schubert’s snake who is sliding down the predicted draft board- past our pick 13 as Hawthorn and GWS aren’t believed to be looking at a KPF

Conceivably we could take Sharp (or Cumming) and Schubert after Duursma without needing to trade up which makes for an interesting comparison with CDT and Farrow which likely would require as to trade up to get Farrow

Massey and his team must have quite the collection of white boards running at the moment with all the permutations they’d need to keeping up with
The dees have a penchant for drafting WA players so Farrow is a good chance at one of their picks

Well between Allan, Maric, Dewar and Duursma we will have wings and half back covered if we want. Mix and match them as you see fit, I just dont want to say that Maric or Dewar can never be defenders because its way too early to say.
Bazzo and Young are also decent kicks that can help cover the gap of McCarthy staying in the middle.

There is enough kicking prowess and transition from those guys that we can afford to put McCarthy in his best role - the middle
Bazzo might be a decent kick , but can he get the ball often enough.

better draft next year though.
Pick 13 next year is worth more
Doesn’t matter. Clubs that have been swapping F1s for current year picks have been having to accept a huge discount

See North F1 trade with Richmond

If your swapping your current year pick for a future year pick, it doesnt matter if the draft is superior, you need to be well ahead

I’m not one to stick up for Kelly but probably round 2 away against Brisbane which coincidentally came after a week of criticism about his game the previous week against the suns

With Ryan leaving, I think it’s time to end the Maric to defence experiment.

Move him back to the forward line as a leading 3rd tall. He can use his great field kick, hitting up targets in the F50.

He looks lost in defence. Tries to play like Hurn but has nowhere near his defensive ability and we have Starcevich for that role now.

Think we’ll see him on a wing.

i suggest rewatching as painful as maybe. as for kelly i would agree that he is not the player we thought we where getting .thats past, i see him in wafl colours more next season with a few of others.

No we just downgrade and pick up supds like Bo Allen
Bluddy hell you are one harsh judge. And quick on the draw as well.

If we declared players to be spuds (and therefore discarded them because of their extreme spudliness) on the basis of one delayed start and injury ridden season we'd have a list turnover of about 20 every year.

And guys like Cox, McGovern, Shep, Steak Knives JK etc. would never have made it to 20 games.

Give the guy a chance. And that means a full pre-season and let's see what he can do over the next two seasons.

Of course the jury’s still out, it was an even draft last year. If one or both of Allan and Gross turn out to be good-great players the trades fine.
And who would we have got for Pick 3?
Gross and Allan are tracking to be good impactful players.

I think his hurt factor better than Sharp and his disposal cleaner. I'd add escapabiluty as a plus too over Sharp. Sharp needs to develop more strength to power through or better disposal / hurt factor. I see Annable, Uwland, Addinsal as more likely to translate to successful AFL plus mids than Sharp. Guys like Worpel, Jhye Clark, Wade Phillips, Koby Stevens, jake Hopper, Will Brodie, Valente, Dow, Constable, etc are a dominant inside junior mids who didn't translate as expected to AFL. Sharp isn't risk free.

Throwing names of players who bare no resemblance to Sharp on and more importantly off the field. Beau is good on the spread and runs all day but he's size and pace combo hurts his rating. If he was from WA and not in the GC academy, he'd probably have missed the AFL academy and be lower on the draft boards.

We're going to take a minimum of 3 mids this draft (Duursma, Banfield, Evans). That's on top of some good talent that we already have that need a time investment to develop.

If we're truly chasing needs, we should be prioritising a young ruck and key defender. They are more problematic in terms of young prospects.
An outside mid Ultility type and two speculative picks is going to help our midfield woes? We need a grade midfield talent the type you get in top5 /10

Hutchinson in that forward role for mine, Hutchinson in the midfield experiment needs to end for good

In think they've all got clear positions. Where and how they develop is a different question.

Duursma is a half back.
Banfield is a wingman.
Evans is a midfielder.

Bazzo might be a decent kick , but can he get the ball often enough.
Hes never had a good consistent run at playing the 3rd tall, hes always been in and out of the side or playing as the 2nd KPD.

Give him a run as the 3rd behind Edwards and Young to see what hes got imo, before we delist.
Ginbey doing something else would allow that, but probably doesnt happen with Ginbey being as good as he is in d50

And, and it's a big if, IF we start winning some contest and clearances at the stoppages, the ball won't spend as much time in our defensive 50. This is when the likes of Tmac will push more into the middle.
Imo TMac is a big part of winning the midfield. Hes a mature body, and he complements what we have with our young, big body, more contested mids in Harley/Hewett/Hall plus Dev and Graham around them(and maybe Yeo).
If TMac can bring some of that leadership he spoke of in an interview earlier this year to the young midfield we have, then him staying in the middle is overwhelmingly the best move.

TMac or a player just like him is a required piece of a good midfield, and we can cover him in d50 somewhat, we cant cover him in the middle.
Duursma Allen off half back and potentially up the wing.

I see Maric Dewar Davis as wings and don't like any of them in defense. Williams and Banfield coming in bolster that too.
Theres enough there to have players in the roles who are at the least thereabouts the best 22, theyre all young still so its hard to say if its good enough for now. But theyre young, outside roles are ideal for young players and thats exactly what the wing and half back are

Fact is, for the vast majority of the list we really don't know what we have yet.

Some posters here like to make bold statements about the ability/ceiling of players like Hewett, Allan, Dewar, Brockman, Hough, Maric, Hall and so on.

I don't even think the coaches would be 100% confident in making calls on what these players can become and where they play their best footy, yet we have so many here who think they can see the future and are better positioned to make definitive statements than the people who spend every day mentoring them.

I feel the reason for all the anxiety around here regarding where the list is headed, is down to the fact that its largely a developing list and there are just so many unknowns...particularly with our midfield. With a little more time and further development, we will know more but I think its important not to fall into the trap of dismissing what we have and wanting to keep piling mids on mids until we've overcorrected.

We have Duursma (outside leaning who we would hope transitions inside too), Banfield (balanced) and Evans (inside/fwd) who are near certanties to join our midfield next year. We also have Dev and 3 more extra rookie spots to fill, likely at least one more mid from those 3 spots too. ON TOP of who we already have developing. McCarthy as a midfielder next year. There are only so many spots to fill in the middle.

I can see why the club would be wanting to take the two best talents in this draft with one & two, instead of reaching for another inside mid. Now having said that, if we do end up taking Sharp the club clearly rates him and I trust them to make the right call. I will trust them if they don't take him too.

Just remember though, we don't know what we have yet. Maybe pumping the breaks and taking a breath is the best thing for now.
