Player Watch Dougie Cochrane APPROVED to be in Port's NGA, signs for Port Magpies for 2026

It's unfortunate that the club can't speak about this publicly and voice their frustration about the AFL STILL not officially approving his application formally.

The club remain confident but are extremely annoyed by the fact that the rule changes for matching bids in 2026 haven't been announced yet.

If Geelong or Collingwood were in the same position, they would just come out and pour a bucket on the AFL.

Port are very reticent to say anything critical.

Maybe they are waiting for the Tassie stadium vote in the Upper House. Although there is a common sense differentiation between the new draft rule changes in 2026 and 2027, perhaps it’s in the same twisted paperwork pile, that only the lawyers understand.

The AFL have said it is out of their hands now which to me implies if the family complete the final step it will be ticked off.

The family have been tasked with proving his ancestry which they are in the process of doing and it sounds like it is going well.

Don't you love the AFL? Us? Make a decision? Why would we do that?

Hang on, we have to give Collingwood another home game.

I may have missed it but where did the AFL say this?

The family have done all the AFL have asked of them.

Does Dougie have the ability to make an impact at AFL as quickly as JHF or Butters did?
I'd be very surprised if Dougie plays midfield in the first season. Expect him to be either tall forward or tall back in his first season. Tbf Butters didn't really play centre bounce either in his first year and he only really started to star from his 2nd year.

With Luko, Georgiades and Whitlock, Dougie could and probably should be eased into AFL.

Yes. His highlights are super impressive. I would say he has around the same talent as the Hornet but in a 195cm frame. He does everything at a high level.

Footballing instincts - very high
Marking - deadly
Kicking - unbelievable for a tall guy, got a left foot too
Forward craft - awesome
Speed - pretty darn good, can jet away
X factor - sky high

I don't see a weakness. I think his marking and forward craft will start him on the half forward line.

He reminds me alot of Buddy Franklin. Has the speed and skills but also the grunt and aggression. Similar to talent to Ugle-Hagan but more confidence and figjam about him

Kicking the winning goal against the crows in the sanfl showed he steps up for the big occasion.

Goodes like versatility. Which Buddy would have had too - but if you're the best full forward around, your versatility is unlikely to get used.

BTW, he's not remotely a figjam. He's a pretty shy kid.

I didn't want to say that because someone on here would have a go but once he puts on muscle, he will be hard to stop. His contested marking is just electric. He can be smashed in the body or by the hands and he has the ability to clunk the ball with ease. He has a flow to all aspects of his game. Given we already have Georgiades, Whitlock and Lukosius, we will have an absolute haul of tall forwards for the first time since forever and Dougie projects to be the best of them and possibly of the comp.

Do we have a timeframe when we will know if he’s eligible and the likelihood? Sorry if it’s been mentioned in an earlier post.

Roll two x twenty sided die and whatever total number comes up, it will be that many weeks.

Honestly I don't know why we can't have been told by now, so it really is anyone's guess.
