Can we bring in a future 2nd pick, say, to match a bid on one of our NGAs, say on Tylar Williams?
As in can we trade our or STK 2nd in 2026 to get the points to match a bid? Yes, but I don’t think we should, at the moment I’ve got us delisting probably another 5/6 next season. With 3 tied talent in the first 2 and a bit rounds, leaves us our first and then an extra probably 2 spots for rookies or trade ins. At the moment we’ll have 6 picks across 4 rounds, think we should keep it that way for now. If anything we should be trading into next year and out of this one

Keys if we shuffle out picks 34 and 41, and pass on an early Williams bid, are we able to then match late bids on Evans and Banfield should they come with “picks” generated at the end of the draft that are equal to our open list spots? Am I right in saying past round 3 you match with your next pick, and such we would be able to match with “round 5” + picks

I like 5 or 6 and F1 for our pick 2. Obviously 5 is preferable but 6 might be more realistic.
Initially read this as "5 and 6 and F1" (think I'd probably accept that)

Yes I love the idea of an Essendon hate-watch. I also love the idea of loading up on the WA kids next year that could be high up the ladder. Also 1sts are likely to be way more valuable next year with the new points rules. Could get a kings ransom on early picks.

Would need to trade back in. See if we can swap the picks back with the dogs maybe.

See North Melbourne. Doesn't work like this because the whole midfield are one way runners. They went after Hugh Greenwood for a reason. You can carry a specialist inside player if they are good enough.
See Geelong, just Atkins who is a tagger basically
See Hawthorn
See Collingwood - just rookie Ned Long
See Crows
See Swans
McCarthy is an outside player & I wouldn't waste him in an on-ball rotation. Likely plays wing from now on though.
We need outside players on ball too.
Daicos
NWM
McLuggage
Anderson
Holmes
Bailey Smith

and so on

And I dont rate Essendon. I put them in the bottom 6 next year. Could even be wooden spooners if they have some bad luck. Anything better than bottom 6 and I would be shocked. The only thing they have going for them is they will get the usual 16 Melbourne games like other Vic clubs.

If we trade out picks 34 and 41 and assuming we’ve used 3 picks, then

any bid from 37 onwards for Banfield and/or Evans could be matched by the AFL effectively creating a pick for us to match with

All we need is a vacant list spot

Well after reading 600+ pages on the draft, having watched zero videos and seeking sanity in its absence my view is take pick 1, trade 2 for 5 and 6, get 9 for 13 and 34 (?), then trade that for an F1 2026. Take Banfield and any NGA's that fall our way and plan for finals 28/29.

If that’s the case,

Gonna get into absolute fantasy land here,

Would love to just say sucks to suck Tylah we’ve got bigger plans, accept 5 and 15 from Essendon for 2, trade 13,15,34,41 to Carlton for 9 and 11, leave the draft with 1, 5, 9, and 11.

Draft Duursma, Sharp, Dovaston, Schubert and whichever of Evans or Banfield gets a late bid (hopefully not both).

Or alternatively don’t take Sharp, take a more dynamic midfielder and then take Farrow at 11 if available.

If we wanted to draft a player who has slid down the order - say Cody Curtin is there at pick 55 for example - then we would need to trade a future pick to a club who still has a live pick to make a selection

That isn’t necessary if we’re matching a bid - it’s why you see clubs hanging around still even when they’re passed on their picks as they might need to match. We did it last year in case a late bid came for Champion

But you need a pick to match it dont you? Even if it were pick 102 its still a pick and a pick is needed it just doesn't have to be of any points value after pick 37.

If we have 5 list spots and only 3 picks, we are given 2 imaginary picks to use at the very end of the draft that we are also allowed to pass on. They can match bids after 37

Essendon F1 is worth more than your pick 2 alone. They'll end bottom 4 next year and next years draft is way better. Not a chance in the world of that happening.

Alright. So hypothetical that wont happen. If North came to us and offered pick 25 and a future 1 with something going back for pick 13 if all the top mids were gone I think I'd do it.

Get Kicket, LeRay, Fred or Swadling and bank in a better draft next year. I just reckon this draft seems really even from around 13 to about 30 (for simplicity im using natural pick numbers not including bids etc.)

That's true, but they do need to pay in order to bring it forward a year and get their guy. I'd happily do the leg work ourselves to get up to 9 if it meant 2 and 9 for 5 and F1. 6 and an F1 if they weren't taking Sharp.
